(Not So) Daily Blog #48 · 3:53am Sep 11th, 2017

I did not build my PC to get hundreds of frames per second only to have the freakin' server lag instead.

Random Fact: Mineplex probably runs its servers off of a potato rack. Probably. Either way, they're pretty much one of the laggiest (and biggest) Minecraft server to exist.

Well golly-gee, it's been quite a while, hasn't it?

Random Fact: For the first time in nearly a decade, AMD is actually beginning to see a higher market share than Intel in certain areas of the world.

Internet's playing nice for once this school year.

Random Fact: Bronze and Brass have natural antibacterial properties related to the chemistry of their metals, making them ideal for commonly used surfaces such as doorknobs. While they are useful in such cases, jewelry made from such alloys will not grant any sort of mystic powers or boost one's health. Don't forget that. It's not magic, it's SCIENCE!

Random Fact: Java SE 6 U0, AKA Java/JRE 1.6.0, is apparently one of the last versions of Java to actually live up to its name as "i586-compliant", according to the installer names. There's the x64 version, and the i586 version. Every version of the i586 build I've tried past the original SE6 crashes upon launching a jarfile complaining about CMOV, which is an i686 instruction.

Random Fact: Linux was once called "cancer" by Steve Ballmer, a former Microsoft CEO. Fast forward now, and you can now run Linux on Windows using an app produced in conjunction by Canonical and Microsoft. Canonical develops Ubuntu, which is by far one of the most popular and well-known Linux distros.

Productivity rates? What is this productivity that you speak of?

Random Fact: My kindergarten teacher was racist. Guess who switched schools ASAP?

Thoughts & Opinions~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

At this point, I'll just say that the US has a loooooong way back to the top once Trump's out. There's deals to fix, Nazis to punch point out, agreements to re-agree to, climate to un-change, and overall, everyone just needs some time to heal.

Random Fact: In the "Sonic the Comic" series, Dr. Robotnik, AKA Dr. Eggman, was formerly Dr. Ovi Kintobor, the reverse of "Ivo Robotnik", Dr. Eggman's name. How did he become Eggman? He got fused with a rotten egg. How? Apparently future Sonic travelled back in time to purposely turn the guy evil because his evilness somehow both saves and destroys the world. Somehow.

Ye.

Random Fact: The next time a major total solar eclipse will occur in the US is 2024, followed by 2045.

Thoughts & Opinions~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

I was second in line to get eclipse glasses today, and not only did I get a pair, but since I was one of the earliest in line, there were also pinhole projectors, phone camera filters for the eclipse, and 3d-printed souvenirs for the eclipse. They handed one of each to me.

Random Fact: before LEDs became prominently used in displays for household electronics like DVD players and stuff, VFD displays were instead used. VFD standing for "Vacuum Fluorescent Display". Basically, the panel was pretty much a flattened vacuum tube that glowed.

Random Fact: Before their downfall, 3.5” floppy disks were occasionally shipped as “DMF” disks, which stored around 1.63 or so megabytes, rather than 1.44.

WHO LIVES IN A PINEAPPLE UNDER THE SEA?!

Random Fact: Rice Krispies Treats are literally just the cereal doused in some marshmallows and glaze.

Apparently, some late revisions of the AMD K6-2/3+ had limited support for CMOV. Just enough that it barely worked, but apparently not enough to function properly without severe instability. No wonder why the K6 line is "i586 compatible", at the same time as being a "6th generation processor".

That sudden realization when you realize that there just might be a rare model of the K6-3+ family that supports CMOV... :trollestia:

Random Fact: Though many distros have long-since abandoned i586-class processors, there's still a small handful that remain supporting it, both due to the necessity to be small and quick, and due to the nature of the distros as being the "lightweight linux" versions.
