Dylan is supposed to represent the innocence we have as children, and I wanted to put that innocence through trials, such as what you read in the fic.

To have him maintain that sense of innocence is crucial to the story. Everything I put in the fic has a meaning, an emotion. Each character represents a certain emotion, virtue or sin.
