[Cosmological] Back on Popular Stories? · 3:06am Jan 6th, 2021

I was very surprised to see this story back on the Popular Stories tab.

I published this story on the 28th, and by the 30th it received its 19th and final upthumb as of this writing. Today, 7 people viewed it as of this writing, up from 0 yesterday, which itself is a bit strange since usually stories get fewer new views per day as time goes on. The story was never very popular overall, with 98 views total.

Yeah, I'm still going with other people's words for titles. But I wanted to share this and push that bummer of a last blog down stack.

Another piece of the puzzle that is the FimFiction "featured" algorithm · 2:15am May 8th, 2020

How does one get on the featured box with less than 200 views??? :rainbowhuh:

(This was taken early this morning.)

I think I've cracked it--the ratio of views to updoots is a factor in the algorithm.

But I had a hella lot of fun writing that story, and that's all that matters at the end of the day. :pinkiehappy: Thank you to everyone who read my story, and I am glad that 75 (and counting) people enjoyed it enough to upvote it!

Stories in Heat · 12:27am May 11th, 2021

What is up with the heat stat? And why, in particular, does The Thing in the Sub-Sub-Sub Basement, a cute but unremarkable story from five years ago with under 1K views featuring a niche pony and a nearly unknown one, always have one of my top heat ratings?

What secrets does the algorithm hold? What is the secret of this story’s enduring and weirdly consistent niche appeal? :trixieshiftleft:

One of these is broken. · 4:54am Oct 11th, 2015

I found my fic in the Popular Stories side bar.

It has 19 views, and you can't find it on any of the pages when sorting all stories by Heat, aka clicking More Popular Stories.
Either my view count is broken or the Popular Stories side bar uses a very different and broken algorithm for finding what's popular than the normal sorting by Heat.

I'm willing to bet it's the latter.

Is there a way I can delete various recommendations from things like say Netflix or Youtube? Oh, they say that these suggestions or whatever they are are based upon what I or somebody watches. They say it's fed into some algorithm to "enhance" my experience. Well, if irritate and outright creep me out are what you were going for mission accomplished.
