Writing Tips · 10:29am Nov 22nd, 2017

I have a sinus headache and don't feel up to working on any of my stories. So here are three tips based on things I've noticed in some of the stories I've read here. I don't know if anyone might find this useful--or even read it. This is probably just shouting in an empty room. :pinkiehappy:

Writing Tips 3: Female Protagonists · 3:51am Mar 11th, 2016

You might find it odd that I, Infernity Zero, am writing a blog about females when I, Infernity Zero, am 101% male. Well, that's because with the advent of shows like FiM, Steven Universe, Legend of Korra, Miraculous Ladybug etc., more and more shows are putting the "better half" in the spotlight. And as a feminist myself who supports equal rights for both genders while still acknowledging that men and women are inherently different, I think that's a good thing.

The Quickening: More Writing Tips · 2:51pm Mar 8th, 2017

Consider this as a continuation of my unusual writing tips guide.

1 - Everyone has that fear of writing that story, but my advice is to just go on. Do your best to make it work.

2 - Don't be afraid to write and share your story. I get my fair share of criticism, but I try to keep as calm as possible.

Zero Blogs: the Dreaded Mary Sue · 3:03pm Jun 23rd, 2015

As a writer and a brony, I can say I've seen that term flung around A LOT. Though after that whole Alicorn fiasco, I can safely say that not many people know what the term actually means.

There have been several interpretations of the term, but I feel the most complete one comes from former fandom member Bronycurious.

"A Mary Sue is a character so perfect that they are never challenged by the limitations of the story."

Walking with Hungry Ghosts and Jealous Gods - Writing about Addiction · 10:10pm Jul 17th, 2018

I love writing, as it’s frequently my preferred medium for not only enjoyment, but stress relief. In my job, I spend a lot of time in the darker places of the human mind, and while I am comfortable there, there are days I need to get out of hell for a while. In his book “In the Realm of Hungry Ghosts”, Dr. Gabor Maté (you’re going to get tired of hearing that name from me) writes that addiction is much like the Preta realm shown on the Madala in Buddhist cosmology. The realm of Hungry ghosts is

Markel's Rules · 10:48pm Dec 12th, 2019

So for most of my readers out there, I want you to know that I have read my fair share of fanfictions. Some of them MLP and some of other worlds. And I can honestly tell the difference between a writer who just writes, and a writer who writes and reads too. There's a fine line between them with evidence in their works. So how can you tell? This blog post is to show what you're doing wrong that can affect your growth as a writer. And I'm going to show you how to correct those mistakes.

Writing Tip · 2:03pm May 11th, 2022

Here's a fun little writing tip, one that's helped me write all my stuff.

Never look at the word count until you're for sure completed. If you do look before then, it'll probably influence you to write just to reach the 1,000 mark, and not to finish whatever scene you're trying to write.

Hope this helps!

Writing Advice Podcast: The Lust for Comments · 2:50pm Jan 6th, 2018

Hey everyone!

Yesterday I recorded a little podcast in response to someone on my tumblr asking me about frustration over not getting comments. I thought I would share it here just in case it's relevant and useful for anyone.

Regarding writing, if you get distracted easily, then this blog is something you should read. · 10:30pm Jun 18th, 2018

When it comes to writing, I think it's fair to say that every single person who has ever sat themselves down with the plan to become an author, starting with something small and progressing onto a bigger project, has thought to themselves, ''Man, this sure is hard! I can barely concentrate and I can hardly get this chapter finished without being distracted by something or someone!''

Writing tips: Creating characters and cultures · 11:09am Mar 15th, 2016

Journcy contacted me a week or two back about doing a brief interview for a school project, and the questions were interesting enough that I figured it was worth reposting to FIMFiction the writing advice that I offered. Read below the break for about 1400 words on fictional culture construction, how to create a quick character hook, and the story that my writing desk tells.

Songs that capture a mood · 1:27am Jun 14th, 2015

If I want to write something sad, I play songs like this one.

Music really does influence your mood when you write. Seriously though, give the song a listen. You youngsters probably don't know who Roy Orbison is, but that's okay. He's awesome.

I'm an old punk. I can listen to whatever the hell I want.

Be an Author: The Message · 2:05am Oct 29th, 2018

In my previous Be an Author* blog on Agendas, I wrote that every character has an agenda. You do, too.

You have an agenda.

You always have a reason to write a story. To communicate. If you are successful, you will have gotten your reader to think about... what?

Your message, of course.

Titles Are Hard—But We Can Make Them Easier · 9:59am Nov 12th, 2017

Over the past few years, I've participated and had my work critiqued in countless writing workshops, each one varying in both content and usefulness. After all, there's only so much that university students, most of them beginning writers, can comment on in half an hour. Yet, if there's one thing that's been constant in every workshop I've attended, it's this: when the time comes to comment on the workshopped piece's title, everyone goes silent. Or, if they do speak up, it's just to give a

So, you want to make your story have a bit more oomph. You don't want to simply make it about characters resolving a conflict in a setting of your choice. Instead, you want to make it leave an impression on the viewers, teach the reader a mind-blowing lesson that will stick with them for their entire life.
