My Thoughts on MLP: Tell Your Tale · 4:12pm May 1st, 2022
I watched the first four episodes of this YouTube series, and honestly......it’s nothing special.

I say 1 A.M. Tuesday still counts as Monday.
I think I’m going to post part of the introduction to each chapter of Understanding Fiction by Brooks & Warren, 3rd edition (1979), to summarize their main ideas about fiction. This one is a digression, so you get it out of order. In the intro to chapter 3, “What Character Reveals”, they talk about showing versus telling while talking about characters.
My regular readers probably know by now that I am hardly the first person to cry “patriarchy!” However--and this seems incredible to me, owing to the popularity of the subject within the very den of third-wave feminism, English Literature departments--my Google-fu finds no other discussion of the issue, so it seems I am about to be just that:
“Show, don’t tell” is sexist.
This week, the Mane 5 have to catch a ferry even though they have a flying RV, Zipp doesn't know how to fly around storm clouds, and Sparky is still eating everything in sight.
And the showrunners have used this song three times now.
There's something different about you, Misty. Did you cut your mane?
Oh, it's dragon fire again? I thought the magic lamp was the goal.
Misty is Gollum.
Sunny likes to watch ponies doing their personal stuff. She always brings her friends along. It's like the public fetish, just that she wants to be the public.
Why did Misty throw away food? That's just evil!
This week, Pipp orders a fruit hat from Wish.com.
From "Confucianism and Chinese Art":
Confucius asked his students their ambitions. The first to answer said that he wanted to help weak countries get stronger. The second said he wanted his people to live a well-off life. The third said he wanted to be a master of ceremonies.
Back in 2013 and 2014, I wrote a lot of posts about showing and telling. Forget the subtleties for now. Here are the basics:
- "Showing" means depicting concrete actions, places, or things, or using poetic metaphors that are vivid and communicate more precisely than an equal number of words of literal description could.
OK, so a while back I reviewed the first half of the G5 premiere movie, but never actually bothered with the second (partly cause, well, it was a little underwhelming). To sort of make up for that (and also cause I just feel like it) I'm going to give my impressions of the first real G5 media to follow that movie (and about time, too!) - the first four episodes of the YouTube series "Tell Your Tale". First I'll cover each episode individually, then I'll talk about what I get from them as a
You all know that one thing that dogs can somehow tell if you're not a dog person?
Well, I think our husky knows. I like her in some sense, but I certainly don't like dogs. I wouldn't personally own one. But she sure is cute! Yet she nipped my hand. She's tried biting me before, too.
If anyone can lend me tips for story telling, I'd be grateful.
So, Iz Izzy throwing fireworks with her hooves or is she using her horn?
The fireworks looked pretty real to me too. Izzy has a point there.
Unicorn fireworks are magical? How come since they haven't had magic for a millennium?
How is Izzy throwing out fireworks from a closed space? Quantum tunneling?
How do you tidy up roots?
Hitch almost got hurt but luckily he landed on his spine.
Out of nowhere, Applejack and Trixie show up.
Pipp ordered 10 kg of pancakes to appease her fatness.
Turns out that she is also a Medusa and needs extra food to feed all the snakes in her mane.
OMP? Oh, my, p****? Pipp, I thought you were female...
Sunny wanted to brush it out, but reformation takes time. You can take Pipp away from her snakes, but you can't take the fat out of Pipp.
Mane styler doesn't know how to style a mane.
How did it become tradition for Yak cakes to contain vanilla extract in the first place when vanilla beans only grow in the tropics? Very suspicious if you ask me...
What is this, a Brazilian exhibition?
"Not to uni my own corn." - corn of the world, unite!
Sunny, the costumes aren't big, you're just small.
Zip is as itchy as when she wore a furtight bodysuit:
Sherifing - a legit verb.
Hitch will lick the streets to test their cleanness.
They killed Kenny, those bastards! - Oh, wait, Kenny is still alive.
[I'm notifying people who favorited "The Corpse Bride" because I discuss it at the end.]
There is one part of every story that must be shown rather than told: The theme. If the theme is something that can be told better than it can be shown, then what you're looking at isn't a story.
"You couldn't handle so much power anyway." - Actually, you make a good point Opaline.
The most powerful Fire Alicorn of all times - Given that you're the only Fire Alicorn, it should be easy to be the best of them.
How are they remembering it if nopony was there to see it?
Ran across Equestria, for years.
