Last year, I wrote two posts on descriptions in fiction:
So, as many of you know, English isn't my birth language, which is the reason why my stories seem so... vocabulary poor at times, especially when it is about putting English expressions. Even in my native language, French, I'm far from being Molière. But I really wish to get better. I want to improve the quality of the descriptions in general which are probably my biggest problem. I want to better show the expressions of the characters, how they are feeling and all.
Seriously, what the heck does that even mean? "Show, don't tell," I mean. You're writing as best as you can, but then some jerk editor like me writes, "Show, don't tell here" on your work like it's a gift from the gods, drops the mic, and walks away. And you're left staring at your story wondering what you did wrong. Truth be told, it, like all writing advice, is very complicated and not always correct. But I'll try my best to help you look behind the curtain and understand what exactly "show,
Hey, a double feature! How 'bout that? Let's go back to my roots and talk a little bit about verb tenses and points of view. Basically, when you start writing your story, you choose one of two tenses, past or present, and one of four points of view, first-person, second-person, third-person limited, and third-person omniscient. What do all those mean? Let's dig in and find out.
I decided to integrate something so it'll be easier for myself to write my stories. A sort of signature style of my own when writing, and while experimenting different kinds of writing styles are okay, I feel this will ground my way of writing for a while; with that this is my way of writing my stories for the coming future:
Dialogue – Short conversations include characters’ name
Long conversations don’t include characters’ name
Well... one of my clients asked me the question. The question that haunts my nights and plagues my days. "If you hate -ing participial phrases so much, how can I actually fix it?" This is a really, really big question, which is why I usually default to either giving a specific way to solve it each time or saying, "Do it for yourself." But I've decided today is the day! I'm gonna try to explain as best as I can how to fix this problem once and for all! It's gonna be tough... not all of you will
So I think I have come to a happy conclusion for Doggy Style!
But I am in need of a pre-reader/ editor to help finish it off. Someone with good grammar and a good eye for catching problems so it can be posted! (Let me know in Comments or PM if you are interested) Must have read full story to know what is happening before going into this final chapter.
I was going to do a little bonus epilogue kinda thing but I think leaving it as it currently stands would be for the best.
I'm talking Pony-MeTM here. It was literally supposed to be maybe a 5-chapter or so one-shot, but what happens instead?
I begin building more and more into the story, pushing the ending further and further back, to the point where I'm quite confident that this'll last at the least a good 15+ chapters, complete with 3 planned endings that branch off chronologically, and an entirely new writing style that was meant only as an experimental tweak.
So...
The French have always been known for their sophisticated sense of style, and nowhere is this more evident than in their furniture design. From opulent Louis XIV chairs to the delicate curves of Art Nouveau lamps, French furniture has a timeless quality that can add a touch of elegance to any interior. One of the most popular pieces of French furniture is the wardrobe, which has been a staple of French homes for centuries. In this article, we
As I look back I see my art style get increasingly crappy as I go back. Now that I look at my current styles, there are really nice. (Well they look nice to me anyway. Sorry, I'm too lazy to show you a picture of my current style. I'll probably post a picture later on this month.) So how's your art styles or do you not draw or paint or well etc. ?
Hey, everypony! How are things? Crazy finale, huh? Anyways, here's another topic that's been fluttering about in my mind. I've talked about dialogue tags in the past, but let's go more in-depth and look at how to do them right.
***
So, quick recap: a dialogue tag is that thing that follows a bit of dialogue to to tell you who said it and how they said it. Like this:
"Welcome to the club," said the doorman.
Yeah. I'm not too sure how I feel about the new style for the site yet. On the plus side, one of the major issues I had with Fimfiction, the scroll function on chapter select in-story, was fixed and works like a charm, and the live reader count was reactivated, but on the other hand a whole new slew of ways to comment and create stories has been opened up to us with additional format options.
I have recently undertaking the project of rewriting an older novel of mine which was a rewrite of a fanfiction I did. It's been interesting so far and has come out very different during this iteration of writing it. There were various issues with the original rewrite that needed addressed on the larger scale, plus I am testing out a new writing style for a novel. I have so far dubbed it the Episodic Format.
Hey guys. I had a briliant idea.
I'm going to merge my stories together. Even those that aren't on fimfiction.
One thing you've got to know, in my universe, i'm trying to show that everyone, no matter which era, is connected. By having similar fates, by having similar backgrounds. Just look at Starswirl and Twilight. Lived in whole different eras. Even, for a while, in different universes! Different Dimensions! They still got together in a season finalee. Still saved the world together.
I have a few notes I wanted to share—things that I felt were important enough to share, because I believe in them, and I believe other writers might find them interesting. These are a bit disorganized, but I’ve tried to organize them in terms of content. I’ll try not to speak too long. Your time is valuable, as is mine.
