So far I've made it past the first dungeon, gotten my hands on Saria's Song, Epona's Song, and attained two Heart Pieces and one of the Slingshot Ammo bags, and am currently en route to Kakiroko Village. Now, if I can just remember which graves have the Heart Piece and the Hylian Shield, I'd be golden, and more than ready to take on the Gerudo Caverns and Dogongo's Cavern.
