Stories: The Path of Destinies, currently free on Steam · 9:45am May 12th, 2018

Steam store page.

Just log in, click the download link, and it's your's for keeps. Offer lasts the weekend out.

A bit on the repetitive side if you're trying for 100%, but it's a cool idea for a game. Basically being one of those 'chose your own adventure' books, but in action-adventure game-form.

Rayman Legends, currently free on Uplay · 9:54am April 1st

Link.

Not April Fool's, FYI. Don't really feel like one this year, anyway.

(Also, Rabbids Coding! Though given that that's an edutainment title for 7 year olds, I'm not sure how great the appeal is among you guys.)

Payday 2, free on Steam · 8:09pm Jun 8th, 2017

Not really my type of game, but if you like multiplayer, then I doubt this one needs much introduction.

Fair warning: It’s ‘just’ the base-game, and the whole thing’s apparently a promotion to get you hooked enough for a coming ‘Ultimate’ edition with all the DLC.

But, hey, at least the devs are being honest about it. Have to give them that much.

Tacoma, free for a limited time · 7:09pm Mar 21st, 2019

Tacome, currently free on Humble-Bundle

Some sort of adventure game, where you listen to the recordings of a missing crew aboard a space-station. Reviewed pretty darn well when it came out a year or two.

Subnautica, free on Epic Store · 2:25pm Dec 16th, 2018

If you don't own this, get it. Best survival game ever made, hands down.

Why? It actually not only has a story, but its got a good story, and you don't (quite) have the metabolism of a field-mouse with an over-active thyroid. Both problems otherwise endemic to the genera.

Also, very, very purdy~

No idea why, you can't even buy this version normally since the Redux came out...

Still, it's a great game. Be sure to nab it while you can.

Pretty charming little game, if a bit frustrating at times. I'd highly recommend it at the price of zero, though!

Handsome Collection, Free over on Epic · 5:30pm June 1st

Really, really not a fan of Epic or their store, as I've said previously, but also again, we're kinda in a time of plague right now, and people need all the distraction they can get.

That being Borderlands 2 + Pre-Sequel, by the way. Both pretty good games in their own rights.

Thanks to ZeroOneInFinn for the tip.

Never played it myself (yet), but I've heard good things and it was one of the earliest indie darlings.

Just FYI? Arachnophobes probably need not apply. Just a fair warning. :raritydespair:

Prismata, Free on Steam · 9:13pm May 18th, 2018

Now here's a rarity: an early-access game that's being given away for free. A 'kill the servers weekend,' as they put it.

And even more shocking, it actually looks really promising. A card-game with a really neat sci-fi take on the genera, and that's intentionally trying to avoid the Magic standard by mixing some RTS style stuff in.

Dead Space 'On The House' on Origin · 11:47am Feb 14th, 2018

Jesus, ten years already? Gosh, I feel old.

Anyway, one of the best horror and sci-fi games ever made. The graphics still hold up shockingly well without being that taxing on your rig, and I've never seen a studio just completely grok sound in a vacuum on the level the now sadly defunct Visceral Games did in this series.

Definitely check it out, if you haven't already.

Layers of Fear, free on Steam · 5:14pm Jun 13th, 2018

From the dudes that went on to make Observer.

Personally from what I've seen of both games Layers is the flawed but interesting prototype of the two... but hey, free game, right?

(Minor scares spoilers in the review.)

Steam store page. Offer valid 'for a limited time,' so be sure to nab it if you've got a thing for horror.

STEEP, currently free on UPlay · 2:30pm May 17th, 2019

Heard some mixed things, but it's a very pretty little sports game. Definitively not flawless by any means, but there's some cool design stuff and locals in this game.

Free over on Uplay until the 23th. Just open the client, and there should be a pop-up near the top.

Freespace 2, currently free on GoG · 10:31am Sep 26th, 2019

Link

Highly recommend you nab this one if you haven't played it, even if you've never heard of it.

It's one of those rare bits of media so good, that it basically killed its own genera for decades. Even today, you seldom see space-fighter games, and the very few that pop up almost unerringly get compared with this one gold standard game.

Evil Genius, currently free on Steam... Ish. · 9:24pm May 6th

I normally don't write about games where you need to jump through hoops to get games, I find it rather scummy...

Going to make an exception in this case, since this is one of those barely remembered classics that just got passed over in the pre-Internet age, and I have a lot of respect for Rebelion the studio. They're... odd, and generally do their own thing. A refreshing rarity for a AA studio their size.
