Should Gravelord Nito speak? · 2:43am May 9th, 2016

So now that I have at last brought another major player back into the plot, I find myself at a crossroads of indecision. Ironically Gravelord Nito was about the only NPC from Dark Souls that I could almost immediately assign a voice to, yet amidst the forums, parodies, and other fan related media for the franchise, the opinion is pretty much unanimous that he remain silent.

Grammer a Week 4: Dialogue Punctuation and Capitalization · 1:06am Feb 14th, 2015

This is Grammer a Week, the periodic blog program-thing where I address a frequently broken grammar rule and tell you how to fix it. This week's installment is about quotation marks. The rules for placing punctuation about quotation marks are complicated. Each of the comma, period, exclamation point, and question mark have multiple rules for placement. What's worse, those rules change depending on where you live!

"Friendship Is Magic" But The Dialogue Is Poorly Translated · 6:27pm Dec 18th, 2019

So earlier today I uploaded a story for you guys, but it failed moderation because "Putting an MLP episode through a translator doesn't count as writing a story."

Okay, fair enough. So I'll just post it here then. Enjoy!

Quick tip: Read the dialogue in your head with the characters voices as seriously as possible for maximum enjoyment.

That it's bait is obvious, but the trap is worth it · 1:59pm Oct 11th, 2015

"How to Lose Weight in 4 Easy Steps" isn't pony, but man if I don't think it, at under 1900 words, is worth your time. I don't actually know if it's fiction or not, and I don't think it matters, because was easily the best thing I've read so far this weekend.

Random Facts #24 · 8:31pm Feb 26th, 2017

Lithium-ion batteries are much harder to charge than "regular" Ni-mh or Ni-cad batteries, as they have a tendency to catch fire, overheat, or explode depending on how they're handled.

After failing on the highest possible level of facepalm, former graphics card manufacturer 3Dfx was consumed entirely by Nvidia, it's biggest rival.

My bookshelf is more book then shelf.

BONUS: Horrible dialogue that I came up with last night:

The Children of Planet Earth - Equestrian Dialogue Translations · 4:05pm Dec 15th, 2021

I've written a lot of Equestrian dialogue in this story, but never bothered to translate it in the story itself. I wanted to leave it a mystery for the reader---and besides, from my experimentation I found in-story translations to be rather tacky. But now that it's complete (including the paper explaining the phonology, grammar, and so forth), I think it's high time to pull the curtains back and show the reader what the hell the ponies have been saying all along.

Type, or imply, Applejack's accent? · 6:50pm Dec 20th, 2017

When I write Applejack's dialogue, I tend to spell her words using standardised spelling instead of "ah's" (I), and "-'in" (-ing). To me, using specific terms (e.g. howdy, partner) with the rest spelled in a standard form is adequate, because the reader should imagine Applejack speaking with her country accent instead of relying on an accent-ised spelling.

Being a Better Writer: Empty Details · 10:11pm Dec 5th, 2016

Today's topic is a bit of the inverse of the one I wrote last week. I didn't intend for this at first—in fact I had no plans for an inverse article when I sat down last Monday; the appearance of this one is entirely coincidence brought about by something I was reading.

Going to publish something in about five minutes · 8:40pm Jul 16th, 2017

It's something dumb and short.

Probably not all that funny. But it is an idea that I bounced off a helpful person a while back.

I decided why not.

Also helped that I planned for it to be a real short thing.

MLP Fighting Game Intros and Clashes: Twilight Edition · 12:46am Mar 1st, 2021

If MLP was made into a fighting game, how would the characters interact before for during combat? This is based on dialogues from the Mortal Kombat and Injustice 2 games:

For this edition, it’s about Twilight interacting with other characters before the fight or during clashes:

Twilight vs. Twilight

How to make conversations real, and how to be more empathetic when saying something · 6:56am Jun 11th, 2017

Just a short blog here about writing in general and a realization I've had and want to get on writing.

So, when I say positioning, I don't mean simple thinking about where your characters are in relation to each other. Though it is related, but while having a conversation with my family, I've more and more realized that within every conversation, every participant is in a certain position.

MLP Fighting Game Intros and Clashes: Clone Edition · 8:42pm Feb 24th, 2021

I remember this one blog or forum post that involved imagining how would the MLP characters interact in a fighting game right before they fight or clash. (If anyone knows where to find that particular post, feel free to send me a link of it through the comments or in private messaging) Examples of these dialogues and clashes would be like in the Mortal Kombat or Injustice games:

Writing Advice: Character Voice in Dialogue and Narrative · 4:55pm Jan 5th, 2019

It's been a while since I've written one of these, but I've been hanging around in FimFiction's Discord's Writing Help chats, and one of the most common things I've been seeing is difficulty with character voicing. Character voicing is hard. It's what's important to making characters stand out from each other. So I thought I'd write a little blog about some of my thoughts on Word Choice in relation to a character's voice.

What makes an interesting conversation? · 6:14pm Jun 24th, 2019

Something I'm wondering about. Would like to hear some other people's opinion on it.

There are two stories. Both these stories have a scene where two characters are talking. However, in one story, the scene is considered entertaining, but in the other, it is boring.

Being a Better Writer’s Summer of Cliche Writing Advice: Said is Dead · 8:32pm Sep 3rd, 2019

Hello readers! It’s Tuesday, which if you’re a long-time reader of this site, you know is a little unusual for a Being a Better Writer post, usually only happening on the occurrences of a holiday or a work shift taking me away on Monday.

Yesterday was the former. I hope you all made the most of it!
