Carol of the Day: Dec 13th · 6:00am Dec 13th, 2019

Going to be a bit silly today. This is "No Time to Diet".

As I mentioned yesterday, I was part of my school's choir. This was one of the songs we sang during our Christmas show. Needless to say, this was our "fun song" of the night.

Gonna have a little fun with this one. This is "Let's Have a Christmas Celebration!", sung by the Eastwood Choir.

Okay, gonna get a little personal with this one...

I sang in choir in college. Honestly, it was the best class I've ever taken. All you do is show up for an hour and sing your little heart out. It was my destresser class. It was great!

Today's carol comes from the Great White North. This is Canada's oldest christmas song, Huron Carol, as performed by the Five Fifths.

The carol was written circa 1642 by Jean de Brébeuf, a Jesuit missionary to the Hurons in Ontario, Canada. Using the indigenous cultural imagery, Jean translated the nativity story into Wendat.

Today, we're looking at one of my favorite carols: "The Holly and the Ivy"; played on an organ (because who doesn't like organs?)

We're taking another detour today. While not a Christmas song, per se, it is a Christmastime tune. This is "Circle of Steel" by Gordon Lightfoot.

As mentioned above, this isn't exactly a Christmas song, but rather one that takes place during the Christmas season.

It's a somber little melody that serves as a little reminder that there are some not so fortunate during the holiday season.

Going back to basics today. Though the Twelve Days of Christmas refers to the days following Christmas, to mark that we have less than a dozen days left, here's "The Twelve Days of Christmas" by Straight No Chaser.

"Twelve Days of Christmas" is one of those songs that you gotta commit to. Once you start singing, there's no stopping or shortcuts. You just gotta suck it up and do it.

Never a Christmas music mix without some Trans-Siberian Orchestra. Today, we're listening to their rendition of "What Child is This?"

I had the pleasure last year to see them live--and it was EPIC! Up till then, I didn't know their tracks were more than instrumental (boy, did I learn quickly).

In honor the first day of winter, we're going to celebrate in classical style.

I wouldn't exactly consider myself a proponent of classical, but I do consider it an intrinsic part of one's musical education. And, while I may not listen to it often, it does hold a place in my everyday playlist.

Going a bit silly today. If you've travelled the YouTubes as I do, you've probably come across Translator Fails. For those of you who don't know, well, just check out the first minute of the video.

Well, last year, Malinda got with the Gregory Brothers and they gave some classic carols the translator treatment.

Very Funny. Have fun!

Hitting the history books with this one. This is "Christmas 1915" by Celtic Thunder.

Every student who has ever learned about World War I has heard, at least in some part, of the Christmas Truce. While the ceasefire in 1914 is the most famous, there were smaller occurrences in the later years.

Today's song a slight deviation. In honor of St. Nicholas day, we're going to look at "Zie Ginds Komt de Stoomboot", a Dutch song children sing as they welcome the arrival of Sinterklaas.

Translated as "Look, Here Comes the Steamboat", children sing about how Sinterklaas (St. Nicholas) is travelling from Spain his his horse and the Black Peter(s) to deliver presents to them.

Merry Christmas, everybody!

To end this wild musical ride, we're just gonna have a little instrumental to celebrate the day and the reason for the season. This is "Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring."

May you find the joy of Christ today and through the rest of the year.

Merry Christmas, all!

This little gem was written by American Folk singer Tom Paxton in 1962. Two versions of this song exist. The original doesn't give under what occasion, if any, the toy was given. Later versions turned the toy into a Christmas gift and some oldies stations would only play this song around Christmas time.

Today, we're listening to the Christmas version of "The Marvelous Toy" as performed by another notable folk singer, John Denver.
