Politics... · 11:15pm May 10th, 2015

For a left-leaning UK resident, this was not the happiest of weeks. After spending hours over-analysing polling data, speculating on what flavour of Labour/SNP/Green/LibDem parliament we would get, and the end result of the general election is the most unexpected and least cool scenario of a majority Conservative government. Intent on further cuts to public spending, abolishing the Human Rights Act, and taking a road which could lead to British exit from the European Union. Not cool.

Taking a letter from her book, I've felt the wish to try my own hand at this.

Grammer a Week 17: Differences Between American and British English · 3:11pm Mar 10th, 2016

This is Grammer a Week, the periodic blog program-thing where I soapbox about a grammar subject I find interesting. You might, too! This week's installment is about the differences between American and British English. Just because we speak the same language doesn't mean there aren't a laundry-load of differences between our dialects. This post will cover some of the more interesting differences between the two.

VHS Opening: Matilda (1997, Columbia TriStar, British) · 1:01am Nov 21st, 2016

Danny DeVito's fascinating 1996 effort is about a young genius named Matilda, who uses telekinesis to deal with her parents, who do not value education, and the confrontation she and her teacher Miss Honey have with Agatha Trunchbull, the oppressive principal of Crunchem Hall Elementary School. The film was a huge hit outside the United States and was highly appraised worldwide. DeVito got his big break via the TV series Taxi and began his career as a

Friendship and Islamophobia · 3:46pm Feb 24th, 2018

I was wondering whether to write this account of what-I-did-last-weekend. I probably wouldn’t have gotten around to doing so, except I then read some very ignorant comments about British Muslims on this site and that made me feel that I really should do this. Maybe some will see this as promoting a politically correct agenda. I prefer to think of it as standing up for my friends.

Put It To The People March London Tomorrow · 4:59pm Mar 22nd, 2019

If British politics were an Equestria Girls film, we would now be at the scene where the Prime Minister has transformed into a megalomaniac winged demon, and is now hovering above the Palace of Westminster, sending out shots of dark magic while cackling with laughter, yet frustrated with people’s efforts to thwart her evil plans.

It strikes me as really weird that a lot of non-American types of English spell apologize & realize with Ss instead of Zs even though they were originally spelled with Zs. Not saying you have to spell those words with Zs, but this particular detail really bugs my mind.

I hope no one from England ever seriously lords over some sort of "we're the original" or "we're the true form of" English mentality. You know, since all the dialects have mutated so much.
