To Display or Delete: the Pros and Cons of De-publishing Stories · 9:21am Dec 27th, 2015

One of the fundamental eccentricities of fanfiction is the way it is published. Because everything tends to be self-published, centralized, and loosely moderated, removing a story from circulation is a lot easier than in traditional publishing. Taking down a story is often a simple click of a button.

For today’s meandering discussion, let’s talk about de-publishing stories.

Equestria Girls Street Addresses: A Weird, Funny Piece of Headcanon · 6:39pm Jul 2nd, 2023

So, with Aces High chapter 4 up (which you should read...and like, and so on so forth), I thought it was about time to write out a funny piece of headcanon I developed rather by accident.

Contest on Inkitt · 3:26am Dec 23rd, 2015

One of my readers alerted me recently that a contest for fanfiction is currently taking place on Inkitt right now and is lasting until the 29th for collecting votes for stories. After painstakingly uploading every chapter of The Lost Element to be entered, I found that a bizarre protocol in indentations prevented the story from being eligible. Instead, I entered what is currently my highest rated work, Musings of a Fallen Princess.

You know, technically that's not wrong. Theologically speaking. Lucifer demanding to be seen as the equal of Man, and all that.

It does raise some interesting, further points about just how The Fall actually happened, though, doesn't it?

Less this:

A musing on original story publishing · 8:00am Jun 25th, 2018

I certainly want to keep all rights to my own story, which means that I'll practically be ruling out every major publishing house there is.

I guess I'll self-publish, then. I can handle writing and editing myself, I can join some reviewing groups to get the thing proofread, maybe stir up some hype with Kickstarter and some marketing muscle, and partner up with a printing company to get the thing rolling into stores.

Does Realism Belong in Escapism? · 6:18pm May 12th, 2022

I’d presume, that for most of us, MLP is an outlet of escapism. It’s a way to get out of life and take solace in something more colorful, something that appears to have a better condition of life and other various things.

I'd Still Own the Film Rights and be Working on the Sequel · 3:57am Sep 21st, 2020

Pillars of Society is barreling towards a conclusion, helped along considerably by my new 'listen to text-to-speech of the chapter on my phone while I edit it on my laptop' method of editing. We're still talking nine or so more chapters, but it's going by fast. I edited two chapters today!

After this, I want to do another long thing! Writing long things is fun! It might not pull in the updoots like the clickbaity little stories do, but it's just more satisfying and solid to write them.

Money and Fanfiction · 12:36am Jul 16th, 2015

A note before we begin; this is not intended to critique or disparage people who do accept money for their fanfic/fanwork; like all my musings posts, it is merely a public exploration of my own thoughts. It is intended to provoke discussion, not to insult or denigrate.

Today’s meandering musings post is about a subject I have wanted to address for a long time. And yet, it’s one that I’m still considering my feelings for.

Why Are My Celestia Stories so Emo? · 8:14pm May 16th, 2017

Working on a Lunestia thing, and there's an awful lot of sad in it. Like not sad-tag levels of sad. It's just when I think about it, Tia's had a lot of sadness in her life. Lost parents (Okay, that was me, I did that to her. I don't think 'Tia's parents murdered by Discord' is anybody else's headcanon), lost sister, then loses literally everybody she loves because she's immortal. What must it be like to bury your great, great grandchildren? No pony else understands what it's like to live

Seriously, this is a fantastic rhythm game, and I just wanted to share it with anyone I could. I am absolutely addicted to it atm. As you can see, very Japaweeby, with many edm tracks to play to. So, right up my alley. Kek.

Here's a great tune that's in it:

April Foul-ups: Some Dos and Don'ts for April Fools Pranks · 11:04pm Apr 1st, 2016

Ah April Fools Day. A time for merriment and silliness. Like Halloween, it's one of those days cordoned off for behavior that would normally be considered awkward or unusual. But, as often happens on these normalcy-flaunting holidays, people mess up. The social mores and rules are poorly defined, and people often rush to do something silly and step over the line. For today's meandering musing post, I'd like to discuss some things that make a good--or bad--April Fools prank.

Yeah, after a disastrous, well, couple of months, I'm back and writing (and videomaking, yay), having given my muse a good swift kicking.

This weekend is gonna see several updates, both here and over on my fanfiction: https://www.fanfiction.net/u/6707624/

Afterwards, I'm gonna commit to returning to a once a week upload of something, and will seriously push to stick to that alongside my once a week minimum video upload.

Dark Fic: What Separates the Good from the Bad · 2:01am Nov 3rd, 2016

Those who have read enough of my fics know that I like Dark fic. I find extrapolating from canon, making it more dramatic and dangerous, to be an interesting challenge.

Yet Dark fic is also one of the most commonly derided sub-genres of fanfic, because so many stories do it so badly. For today’s blog post, I’d like to discuss one of my favorite types of fanfiction: what separates the good from the bad, and how those ideas can be seen in other types of fiction as well.

So, it's late at night, like one thirty in the morning probably. I'm searching for fics (the system on this site is somewhat difficult to grasp) and I see one titled "The Twilight Before the Sunset". I didn't think much of it when I first saw it cause I got absorbed in reading another fic. However, I see it again as I'm about to lay down my phone to work on a fic and, offhandedly, I say, "I'd like to be that person who points out that technically sunset comes BEFORE twilight."
