Wanna be a better writer? · 6:42am Dec 4th, 2016
So do I!
"Oh Tumbleweed!" you cry, "You are the best at writing things! Tell us how to write things!"
And, benevolent gentleman I am, I oblige. More specifically, I turn to one of my favorite characters to write (even if she doesn't feature in every one of my stories, 'cause nobody's perfect). And so, friends, I humbly present "How to write Applejack, in like three easy steps."
Step One: Drink a drink. Cider is good. Whiskey is better.
Step Two: Watch this:
I love writing, as it’s frequently my preferred medium for not only enjoyment, but stress relief. In my job, I spend a lot of time in the darker places of the human mind, and while I am comfortable there, there are days I need to get out of hell for a while. In his book “In the Realm of Hungry Ghosts”, Dr. Gabor Maté (you’re going to get tired of hearing that name from me) writes that addiction is much like the Preta realm shown on the Madala in Buddhist cosmology. The realm of Hungry ghosts is
Some of you have asked about my writing setup. Well, you're in for a surprise. I write on 20 year old computers. Why? Well, mostly because I'm prone to distraction when I'm writing and I don't want a computer that has internet. You can't get on the internet on super old computers because the network protocols are obsolete. So what do I use? For a desktop, I use a top of the line iMac G4 with a 20" screen. These are pretty rare and hard to come by these days. There's not even ONE of
Blar. Had yesterday off. Woo! Though it was grey and rainy all day and I accomplished ... very little. Not as woo.
However, in a show of ostensible preparation for NanoWriMo (which I will probably still fail but still, effort!) I went ahead and downloaded a free trial of Scrivener last night. I've been poking around at it for a little bit, though I haven't gone and written anything just yet. And, uh, I'm procrastinating writing by posting about it here. Woo!
This is more for other would-be writers out there. Writing can be a daunting process. Not just in putting your thoughts to text, but making them readable. Here's what I do:
1. Make a timeline of events.
With the latest instalment of my series now published, It should be clear to my followers and my readers (If there is any) that now I have a proofreader. ChudoJogurt
Thanks to him, I believe my writing and my stories will improve in the technical and grammatical terms. And more importantly, making sure that my stories are far more enjoyable to read.
A quality of life improvements is about to be seen!
Hello! I am Ashley, an amateur author turning her hobby into a craft. Below you will find details on commissioning a piece of fiction from yours truly. Over the past few years I have been writing a lot of My Little Pony fan fiction, though there are other fandoms I will write for, and I can write original fiction too. Further down you can find a portfolio of what I have written, both for myself and for past clients. I also write SFW and NSFW stories, though NSFW pony fiction will be posted onto
After having written each of the main cast in this fanfic, and while I suffer through a period of writer's block in it, I've decided to write a blog post about how I capture each of their personalities and ways of talking through text. I've ordered them by their first appearance in my fic.
This has actually happened! More than once!
Me being asked for advice on writing. Who would've thought?
So a new chapter, and as of the moment of writing this: twenty one upvotes, three downvotes. It's better than when I got up this morning, but still, tut tut. Seven to one? Can’t have that. Gotta step up my game for the next chapter
Welcome back readers! And welcome to the year 2019! Which, as we all know, is either infested with replicants or about to become the battleground once again between that blue robot known as Megaman and his nemisis, Dr. Wily.
A lot of times when I see people asking questions about their plots, it’s because they lack a clear endpoint or guiding line that can help them orient themselves towards what the story needs from them. So, I’m going to try my best to break down some of the basic principles that can help you maintain clarity in your workflow at every stage of the story.
Any of you my followers intentionally write bad stories? I kind of do that as a matter of my craft, most of my stories are somewhat intentionally badly written.
Pebble: you both act like hot plot-nuggets.
(Hidden Rose frowns, turns away, and rolls her eyes)
Ambrosia: a’ight, sometimes we do, but that’s different. Afore, Sumac wasn’t hurt and now he is. We’re not gonna act like butt-dumplings when he’s like this.
Pebble: I don’t believe you. (Gestures at Meg and narrows eyes at Apple sisters) If I were you, I wouldn’t do anything to upset Megara.
(Apple sisters both gulp)
What an astonishing thing a book is. It’s a flat object made from a tree with flexible parts on which are imprinted lots of funny dark squiggles. But one glance at it and you're inside the mind of another person, maybe someone dead for thousands of years. Across the millennia, an author is speaking clearly and silently inside your head, directly to you. Writing is perhaps the greatest of human inventions, binding together people who never knew each other, citizens of distant
Criticism... if ever there was something an artist can receive to knock them down or build them up, it's the opinion of others. And... well... I got a good dose of it today.
So now that things have calmed down a little (I've been working 12 hour days for the past two weeks but work is nearly done) and it will soon be the holidays, I should have more time for writing inbetween job hunting.
-Family is going to have a second chapter after all. The aunt comes to visit.
-Brilliant but lazy will be a (long) one shot
Right, first things first; I meant to bring this up sooner after my last blog post explained my family situation, but between work, RPing, and writing (which I'll get to in a bit) it sort of slipped my mind. First and foremost, I want to thank everyone who commented on my blog post or reached out to me privately regarding the situation with my grandfather. It was a big help during a time when I was still trying to get my head back on straight, and I deeply appreciate each and every one of you.
