Be an Author: Plot Advancement by Stupidity · 5:51am Nov 20th, 2018

Avoid plot advancement by stupidity at all costs. It is very easy to write a character who forgets to lock the door if the story hinges on a burglary. It is very easy to have the guards distracted by the delivery of an unexpected cake if the plot hinges around nopony getting past them. It is easy to forget that unplugging a megalomaniac computer could prevent it from taking over the world if the plot hinges on ignoring that fact.

Season One Timeline · 3:54pm Sep 27th, 2015

I'm putting this here more as a bookmark so I don't lose this, but it does provide a reasonable continuity to Season One.

Rewrites! · 2:45am Jun 11th, 2018

As it says on the title, I just finished some rewrites on Small Town Life, specifically Episode 17 - Meet the Parents, which was a MAJOR change at Sunny's mother's announcement of her retirement, and some edits on Short 4 and a few episodes after that.

Granny Smith: "Oh fer landsakes, Applejack! Will ya stop frettin' over the farm? Sure, we got expenses and sure we got bills t' pay, but the land's ours."

Applejack: "Well yeah, it is, but all those payments-"

Granny Smith: "No, ah mean it's literally and legally ours. Princess Celestia bestowed it t' us. We are technically a dukedom."

Twilight: "Wait, what?! HOW?!"

Dash: "Um... I'm awesome? And since I'm awesome, and magic, I should be able to unlock more power from my element. Which adds to my own magic, and makes me even MORE awesome."

Pinkie: "Makes sense to me!"

Twilight: "... You're trolling me aren't you?"

Dash: "Not everything's about you, Twi. It's actually ALL ABOUT ME!"

Hooffields & McColts: On words, cheating, and the use of useless characters · 9:18pm Jan 6th, 2016

Nyerguds sometimes posts long discussions between him and his friends about recent episodes. They did one on The Hooffields & McColts, in which the question came up of why Twilight was in the episode, since all she did was annoy ponies by trying to solve the feud with her fancy book-learnin'.

Some Writing-Related Questions · 8:38pm Sep 6th, 2017

One thing that I worry about when creating a new story is whether or not everything fits and is plausible. Two criticisms that seem to plague stories on a fundamental level, or at least criticisms that I've seen, are that a story is contrived, and a story is convoluted. I have trouble telling when a story is convoluted and when it's merely complex without fault. I have trouble telling when a situation is contrived in a positive manner and when it's in a negative manner. There are no professors

So . . . . . It’s been a while. How’s everyone doing? Good? That’s good, that’s nice.

What have I been up to, you ask? Well . . . Trying to recapture my stride. I tried working on a couple of ideas on Pony Plots . . . . I’m not through with that story, yet, but I don’t know if I have any real, full length arcs left in me, with it. Well, I’ve got one, but it’s gotta wait a while.

Worsening: Your sister broke her leg. You get her to the car and reach into your pocket. No keys. Ugh! Go to the house. It's locked. Of course it is; the keys are inside. You crawl through the open front window. Get your sister into the car and start the engine. Try to. It won't start. No gas. You bang the wheel and grab your phone, dialing press 911. When the operator answers, your phone dies. You hit your head against the wheel and look up. The police are racing down the

Writing: Plotters and pantsers in other walks of life, and Commedia dell'Arte · 2:53am Jul 10th, 2017

To plot, or not to plot?

You know about the eternal feud friendly debates between plotters and pantsers, right?  Plotters make a plot outline or at least know how a story will end before they write it.  (Seat-of-the)-pantsers don't, saying they need the spontaneity to make characters come to life.

So, happy day! Twilight Sparkle and Flash Sentry tied the knot and had a child!

The foal that results... Is a superpowered alicorn baby. A little colt who is, unfortunately, even more energetic than Flurry Heart ever was. It gets so hard balancing work and life that eventually, the couple need to pull back and take time off from their duties to really get this family thing down!

And with the rest of the Mane 6 involved, how can it go badly?

I myself have used the fanon of the Shadowbolts being Luna's elite, secretive counterpart to the Wonderbolts: The sneaky, special operations unit of pegasi and their support who do clandestine operations against Equestria's enemies. So here's one possibility for a fic based around it:

PLOT DRIVEN vs CHARACTER DRIVEN · 9:10pm Dec 18th, 2022

They never taught me this in school... (they just taught us the definitions... not the handling)

So there IS a difference...

In a plot-driven story, the focus is more on the things a character deals with, and will place plot and story structure ahead of deep character development. Most genre fiction like sci-fi or mystery tends to be plot-driven.

How to Twist (and Shout) - Kishotenketsu · 6:31pm Aug 2nd, 2017

Did you know there's only one story in the world? It's called the Hero's Journey, or Hero With A Thousand Faces. Literally every story you write is a repackaged form of this traditional myth. Right? :trollestia:

Nahh, of course that's ridiculous. People want to believe it's that easy, so they'll squeeze every story into that model, even when it doesn't really fit. It's an effective set of themes, but hardly the only option.
