In about five days, I start Christmas/New Years (more the latter here in Japan) break. because of that, today and yesterday were my last days at this school until January, and that means we were doing a holiday lesson, this time centered around Christmas. I'll be doing this again over the next three days, but my dear School Marm will only be there for part of Wednesday.
To recap, I tried one of only twenty pancakes made at a popular restaurant, valiantly fought alongside a bunch of Japanese to capture a Rhydon in Pokemon Go, helped some French tourists order amazing yakitori, and (most importantly of all) saw One Piece: Film Gold and it kicked so much ass! Dear lord, it's been an amazing day and it's only my first full day in Osaka!
Oh and get ready, because I may have just finished up editing a certain chapter of a story.
Today is my last day at school, and just about marks one year in Japan for me. So, what to say about it? So much has happened and so much has changed in a single year when, before, I felt static and stuck in a place I'd never wanted to be. In that case, let's start there.
So, as some of you know, I'm very fascinated with a unique little thing we call "Japan." I take a large amount of interest in this country, from its music, to its language, to its culture. I'm what many Japanese people refer to as 「しんにち」(pronounced shin-nichi, literally means "Pro-Japanese"). I am interested in Japan enough that I am making an effort to learn to speak Japanese.
2024 has come, and with it came Japan's biggest earthquake since 2011. We got hit by a whopping 7.6 on the Noto peninsula in Ishikawa prefecture at about 4:15PM on January 1st.
Tomorrow is a huge day in world affairs.
I honestly have not completely read up on all the details and everything I need to know for any public events and broadcasts, but the most important part is this:
Tomorrow, Emperor Akihito of Japan will abdicate the throne to the Crown Prince Naruhito, bringing an end to the Heisei Era after just 30 years. He will be the first Emperor to abdicate in over 200 years.
Since I can't reasonably go see my family this year, I went to see The Pillows in Okayama yesterday for Thanksgiving.

As the title says, I'm off to Japan for a week as part of a university thing. Journalism unit, about media pop culture soft power and media, media tourism and all that sort of thing. Which means I get to spend a week with 10 other people going to all the cool places in Tokyo! Flying out tomorrow at midday, then sitting in Sydney for seven hours waiting for an overnight, ten hour flight to Tokyo. Bleh, maybe I'll spend some of that empty time writing...speaking of which...
So I woke up in Kyoto at 8am this morning to a literal earthquake of 5.3 magnitude that had it’s epicenter literally miles from my Airbnb.
We were stranded in Kyoto for most of the day because the public transport system was screwed, but made it safely to Osaka. I have Flitter with me and am taking pictures.
I have lots I want to write, and stuff will start to come out after I get back to the states next week.
Wow. I had heard the praise for this movie, but having seen it for myself, yes, this really is one of those rare occasions where the movie in question does live up to its hype.
Funfact: the title was stolen from a small child's T-shirt. I smile every time I see 'Japenglish' and I am so sad that I will not see it anywhere near as often in the coming school year. From middle school onwards, and even in some elementary schools, the students wear uniforms, and that makes me sad. The hope is that the students can make me smile as much, but I have my doubts. Of the classes I will miss, which are about half of them, my 3-2 class from my third school I will miss the most.
