Stephen Frears' understated chronicle of the week following the death of Princess Diana, is an astonishingly humanizing character study of both Tony Blair and Queen Elizabeth II, highlighting their own flaws and their own strengths, all in a remarkably effective, yet no doubt primly British manner.
I have no damn clue at all what the hell I just watched, but it was something really incredibly, wonderfully, disturbingly bizarre.
I'm half watching Twin Peaks, and half writing What They Expect to Give. Waiting for my son to fall asleep. I want to just focus 100% on writing, but because I'm pretty sure I'm going to be interrupted at any moment, I don't want to get too absorbed into my work. I get VERY crabby when someone snaps me out of my rhythm...
The Coen Brothers' debut feature, Blood Simple., is a vital part of their filmography, not only because its a debut that already shows artists confident in their own skill, but also as a sort of stripped down, demo version of much of their later work.
Okay, I'll admit it. I cheated. I watched the DVD Screener of The Revenant that got leaked, and I don't feel guilty at all.
The Revenant is Mexican auteur Alejandro González Iñárritu's sprawling, intense, uncompromising and mysterious meditation on revenge and what lengths people will go to achieve it, and the costs it heaps upon those who allow it to consume them.
Steven Spielberg's second feature continues to be a genre defining masterstroke of filmmaking, balancing character, story and thrills equally, and not only inventing the idea of the summer blockbuster, but in many ways, remaining the benchmark that so many such films have been judged by, even 40 years after its release.
Director Ryan Coogler reinvigorates the beloved Rocky franchise with this unabashedly populist and inspiring film, which manages to not only provide a wonderfully respectful and heartfelt farewell to Rocky himself, but also provide us with a new name to root for in that of Adonis Creed.
French-Canadian enfant terrible/auteur Xavier Dolan's fifth film (made when he was a mere 25 years old) is a swirling cauldron of raw emotion, and a trio of irreparably broken people, seemingly forever locked within their own self-made prisons. It is a film that almost slaps you in the face with it's sheer raw impact, but in doing so, overwhelms.
Just like Redford, Newman and director George Roy Hill's previous collaboration, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, The Sting proves to be a stupendously enjoyable romp that not only manages to be a supremely FUN film, but also one with a twist ending that is so awesome that I literally shouted for joy at the sight of it. Winning a well deserved Best Picture award, the film has aged beautifully, and now rightfully stands as a crown jewel of the caper genre.
Brooklyn is a miraculously moving, intimate look at the story of a young Irish girl's maturation and journey from girlhood to womanhood, while framed around the immigrant experience. Far from a flashy film, Brooklyn instead feels like a softly colored impressionistic look at the life of an Irish immigrate, and in tern, becomes one of the most serene and genuinely heartwarming films I've seen in quite some time.
Well...that was a total waste of my time.
It's been awhile since Bruce Timm and Alan Burnett, creative genius behind the DC Animated Universe, have written anything new, with Burnett's most recent writing effort (according to IMDb at least), being the 2011 episode of Batman: Brave and the Bold "Bold Beginnings!". Timm has stayed mostly in the executive producer status, but now, the duo return to form to create a new mini-series using DC Comics characters.
