cleverpun's Concise Critiques #3 · 11:39am Jan 29th, 2016

I go into every story hoping for something that will be worth commenting at (great) length on. Unfortunately, not everything warrants prolonged critiquing. Here is a selection of reviews/critiques, in two sentences or less.

Revisiting Old Stories; Deterrent · 9:51am Sep 13th, 2017

Many moons ago, back when I was a bad worse writer, I posted a preliminary idea for a story. It was about a freshly-alicorned Twilight, and her struggle with learning a new type of magic. Celestia asks her to learn war magic; whereas combat magic deals with combat between individuals, war magic deals with conflicts between armies. If combat magic is the bow and arrow or the sword, then war magic is the

Critique Review: The Secret Life of Rarity (With Guest Reviewer Brony Fife) · 3:20pm Aug 5th, 2015

Critique: One thing to note about this story before we begin is that the story has to warn us that the author doesn’t condone the actions and that if any author has murderous impulses to seek help.

Fife: Gotta be a responsible author, I guess. “In this story, Fluttershy explodes twice. I do not condone exploding. If you feel like you’re going to explode, it sucks to be you.”

Taking Criticism -- Terrible Writing Advice · 8:33pm Jul 20th, 2017

While it's not new, I have been taking special notice of some things around here lately. So... here you go. I'm sure you can recognize the type of writer around here the video is satirizing.

PSA: The success of My Little Pony: The Movie and the underperformance of Blade Runner 2049 is proof that big name critics don't matter · 8:53pm Oct 8th, 2017

That's right, My Little Pony: The Movie made more money than what a lot of were expecting to make since people were predicting that it was going to make a dismal 7 million dollars when it made double that amount. And Blade Runner 2049 is barely at number 1 at the box office and it made a lot less money what a lot of people were saying that it was going to make. The vast majority of big name critics gave very good reviews to Blade Runner 2049 but it did not made into a blockbuster hit. Meanwhile

Be an Author: Critiquing · 9:13pm Nov 11th, 2018

Becoming an effective, efficient author requires you to both master how to give inspiring criticism and how to take criticism without tearing yourself (or others) apart. In this blog entry, I will show you how.

One thing I like about the FIM fanfic fandom is the abundance of reviewers and critique available. It helps authors grow, helps other authors learn from their mistakes, and helps inform readers of stories they may like or dislike.

I generally avoided being one of those reviewers for a long time. I usually preferred a direct dialogue with the author, so my critique would often take the form of a lengthy comment directly on the story in question.

Today’s story uses not one, but two twists. Since the first twist is fairly obvious (perhaps intentionally so), I have not bothered to spoiler-tag it.

Today’s critique is another “retro” one. It is an adaptation of a comment I already made, on a story I have already read, rather than completely new material based on a recent read.

The description and title are some of the most important parts of a story. They provide readers with their first impression, convince them to read it, and characterize your story even after it is finished.

Why you shouldn't care what others think + what I think should be done to the rate system on this site · 8:03pm Oct 4th, 2020

Not a lot of things can or do bother me anymore.

For starters, I realised early on in my younger years that it is absolutely pointless getting worked up or worried over the little things, I.E, when you get picked on, called names or when you get singled / left out of a group. Unless it's very personally inflicted, it doesn't bother me. It shouldn't bother anybody, really.

Self Perspective: the Dangers of Perfectionism and Self-Deprecation · 11:05pm Aug 18th, 2020

In my editing career, I have met many authors who possessed...tenuous self-esteem about their work. My blunt critiquing style and frequent lack of tact have damaged many an author's self-esteem further. And I take full responsibility for that. I've often had a strained relationship with my own work as well. I recently did some editing for an IRL friend new to writing, and these topics came up multiple times in our discussion. I thought it a good thing to discuss.

Before I get to the story, I first want to announce a decision. I am going to continue with the other two stories included in the book, but I'm going to take a break. Maybe October? Sooner, later. Not entirely sure. So for those who want to know, yes, you will be able to find out the rest without having to look for the book yourself.

Okay. So, let's get to it.
