Episode Re-Review: Forever Filly · 7:37pm Jan 20th, 2024

Well, 2024's underway, and I really need some pony content to get through it. With "Make Your Mark" having wrapped up for good, "Tell Your Tale" has done nothing to convince me it's worth watching, especially not when it's come to light that "Secrets of Starlight" was supposed to be a stand alone special for a Chapter 7 of "Make Your Mark", undobutly meant to be a second pilot, hence why we had a new villain in Alura and a new addition to the main cast in the form of Comet. But not wanting

Episode Re-Review: Honest Apple · 6:17pm Feb 3rd, 2024

Usually, by this point a season would've given us at least some idea of what was in store and what they were going to focus on. But Season 7 was up to eight episodes at this point and there was no sense of direction, the closest that could be said was family since that was the focus of two episodes centered on different Crusaders. We also had Twilight being freed from being Starlight's teacher, allowing Twilight and Starlight both to explore new boundaries. But this episode was coming on the

Episode Re-Review: Secrets and Pies · 3:58pm Apr 6th, 2024

*Sigh*, might as well get this over with. When this episode first came out, I didn't think it would be possible for any episode to dethrone "The Super Speedy Cider Squeezy 6000" for the worst episode of FiM in my book, but somehow this episode found a way to do that. It doesn't help that it had its big secret accidentally exposed early thanks to an IDW comic getting leaked ahead of time, so we the audience already knew what the twist was going to be. By now, the 2017 movie had come and gone

The two parters were going to take a bit of a break after this issue, especially since the hiatus was still ongoing with only "Rainbow Rocks" to really tide fans over. The first half was pretty good despite some questionable logic about the mystery and who was suspected. So was this issue able to keep the momentum going or just prove that comics weren't able to ever truly wrap up an arc properly? Well, let's find out.

Episode Re-Review: Not Asking for Trouble · 5:22pm Feb 10th, 2024

After ten episodes, Season 7 still had only one or two episodes that were not hotly contested. Even the long awaited royal sisters episode "A Royal Problem" was hotly debated, with some really liking it, others despising it, and others still regarding it as a mixed bag. Meanwhile, the early airings on Treehouse T.V. in Canada kept on rolling, at least through the first half. But the U.S. was going to take an abrupt halt in the airings right at the beginning of summer, with this being the last

Episode Re-Review: Horse Play · 4:26pm May 11th, 2024

Season 8 finally had an episode that made use of its changes to the status quo with "Surf and/or Turf", which many said was FiM tackling the trickly subject of divorce (though I personally don't see it). However, the episode also felt at times like it was more of a belated commercial for the 2017 movie rather than an actual episode, and the School of Friendship itself was only sort of relevant to it. And now it was time for something completely different: Princess Celestia's very own focus

So it is that we come to the beginning of the end for these re-reviews at long last, with only Season 9 and two Equestria Girls specials left to cover. Season 9 is officially five years old this year, meaning it's been five long years since FiM wrapped up for good. At the time, word that Season 9 would be the final season for the show left many fans reeling, especially after Season 8 had been a disaster in every sense of the word. Nowadays, Season 9 remains a contested and disputed season, some

Episode Re-Review: Friendship University · 3:45pm Jun 15th, 2024

Season 8 returned to the airwaves around August, like always, but the first episode to greet viewers was the absolute disaster that was "A Matter of Principals", in which Discord became the latest character to be completely ruined. And the worst part was he got off scot free for his actions. Things seemed to be better with "The Hearth's Warming Club", which finally let the student/young six hold an episode mostly on their own. And thus we come to this episode, penned by Chris "Doc" Wyatt and

Season 8 kept on going, even as episodes started to be leaked ahead of time in other countries again. It looked as if the worst was over for Season 8 after "A Matter of Principals", "The Hearth's Warming Club" was widely praised and "Friendship University" was seen by most at least not an infamously bad episode (which Season 8 seemed to have an unusually high concentration of). And now we have this episode, penned by G. M. Berrow, who by this point had stopped penning chapter books and had

So just in time for the show's fourth season, the comics decided to finally include alicorn Twilight. And this was such a controversial thing that some people actually threatened to boycott the comics all together as a result (I imagine most did and eventually left the fandom). Meanwhile, word was just starting to surface about the micro series' successor for 2014, the Friends Forever series, but the micro series promised to go out with a bang by including everyone's favorite princess: Princess

By this point, Season 8's best episodes were behind it, and just about everyone was ready to leave it behind and declare it the worst season of the show. And for the penultimate episode of said season, we have a Spike episode penned by none other than Josh Haber. This should've been a recipe for success considering Josh not only wrote "Gauntlet of Fire", Spike's best episode, but also wrote "Molt Down" which did Spike justice and gave him wings. Yet many would say this is a contender for

Episode Re-Review: Between Dark and Dawn · 4:48pm Sep 7th, 2024

Season 9 at last found some consistent quality near the end of its first half. Ironically, it was a Starlight Glimmer focus episode that first brought things back to a good level of quality, as "Student Counsel" showcased how far Starlight had come as a character. Then there was "The Last Crusade", which finally showcased Scootaloo's family and home situation, though it was not without controversy and not just because of her aunts. Still, for the first time all season, Season 9 had back to back

Episode Re-Review: The Last Problem · 4:11pm Jul 18th, 2021

This is it, the grand finale for all of FiM. After nine seasons and just over 220 episodes, this is how it all ends. It really does seem fitting that they would end it not with one more two parter but with a mostly stand alone episode, perhaps because "The Ending of The End" was so polarizing because of a badly thought out twist that destroyed a character, on top of some other questionable writing decisions that made what should've been an epic final battle feel kind of like a let down. And

So after the first comic started things off on a fairly promising (if now somewhat rocky) a start there was naturally pressure on the comics to keep it up and perhaps do even better. But many regard this as the first of many stumbling blocks for the comics, even back when this is the only other one to go on. Considering I found the first comic to have not aged the greatest (though still ultimately enjoyable) has time made this second issue any better or just made it worse? Well, let's find

Oh boy, it's this episode. All the way back in 2011 this episode touched off a real firestorm of controversy, and a lot of what it involved (science v.s. religion) has only gotten worse since then. Dave Polsky wrote this episode, marking his debut as the last of the writers assembled for the show. So, putting aside the controversy for a moment, is this episode actually good or is it still bad on its own merits? Well, let's find out.

*Sigh*, well "A Dog and Pony Show" was nice while it lasted. But now we're diving right back into the bad stuff. I think I can pin down what the problem is with Season 1's second half though. The show was caught in the crossfire between Lauren Faust who kept wanting to take it in a more adventure and action driven direction, and Hasbro who wanted the show to be more slice of life based so it'd be easier to market. The writers knew that no matter what they did they would never be able to please

And so we come to what, at the time, could've very well seemed like the grand finale for the whole show (unbeknownst to fans Lauren Faust was working on her vision for a grand finale). Of course we know now this isn't true, but at the time no information about Season 2 had been released. Amy Keating Rogers, a dedicated veteran and the first to work alongside Lauren Faust was given the honor of writing this finale. Considering she'd been cranking out hits like "Fall Weather Friends" and "A Dog

Now we come to the big one. This was the first episode that no one was willing to defend back when it aired, and it still remains often among the show's worst episodes. This episode also marked the debut of the show's first new writer in the form of Merriweather Williams. She had previously worked on Spongebob Squarepants during its first three seasons and had more recently been involved with Adventure Time which sparked the cartoon renissance of the early 2010's. So you'd think

So now we come to the first (but certainly not the last) of what could be said to be unpopular opinions from me. Everyone seems to like this episode, and it's the debut of M. A. Larson who was a fan favorite writer once upon a time. So that should be a recipe for success, right? Well, let's just get through this episode and see what happens.

Fifty episode was quite a feat, though Season 2's second half had been plagued by numerous ups and downs and all eyes were focused on the season finale. Still, Amy Keating Rogers was back and was writing another Pinkie Pie episode. Like Season 2 itself her track record had been very up and down, leading to duds like "The Cutie Pox" but also classics like "The Last Roundup". So, for her last outing in the original three seasons, did Amy send herself off on a high note or just bring her
