"There are all sorts of theories and ideas about what constitutes a good opening line. It's tricky thing, and tough to talk about because I don't think conceptually while I work on a first draft -- I just write. To get scientific about it is a little like trying to catch moonbeams in a jar.

But there's one thing I'm sure about. An opening line should invite the reader to begin the story. It should say: Listen. Come in here. You want to know about this.

This opening accomplishes something else: It's a quick introduction to the writer's style, another thing good first sentences tend to do.

Of course, it's a little do-or-die here for the writer. A really bad first line can convince me not to buy a book -- because, god, I've got plenty of books already -- and an unappealing style in the first moments is reason enough to scurry off."

Welcome to First Glance Reviews, a group specifically designed to assist you in improving that all-important opening of your story. We will do this by reading the first 1,500 words or so of submitted work (though this may be reduced for fics with small word counts), as well as examining aspects of the front page of the story in question, and providing a critique on how the story sells itself, whether it delivers on those expectations, where it loses reader engagement, and how it might better hook the interest of prospective readers.

We are dedicated to ensuring that:
Our critiques, whilst open and honest, are always positive and encouraging, and
Our critiques are directed to authors, rather than to casual readers of stories and reviews.

We are always open to submissions; however, we are currently a small team of reviewers and would ask for patience as we work our way to your story. If you are interested in submitting your work for review then you can do so using this form. However, we would strongly recommend reading our Submissions Guidance first, so as to prevent any delays or rejections.

Gabby's Favourite Quotes on Writing: #2

"My own experience is that once a story has been written, one has to cross out the beginning and the end. It is there that we authors do most of our lying."
– Anton Chekhov

I'm still a junior on this website but I want to know........what is the difference between proofreaders and reviewers?

So can somebody give me a little help here? I don't see how to submit my story from inside the folder, or from the story itself. How do I send it in?

Still awaiting that review :rainbowhuh:

Sooo... is the group still active?

410140 As I said in another thread, we're reviewers, not proof/pre-readers. We look at all aspects of what we're given, and then share thoughts based upon that. Regardless, I look forward to when you finally submit.

410139 Thank you, and yes, I can wait!
And I'm glad you all look over other aspect besides grammar.

410138 Ah. My mistake. Unfortunately, like I said, you'll have to wait until the next opening. Also, as far as writing style goes, keep in mind that we focus on many aspects of the story. So even if the writing style stays the same, we'd still look at other things to give advice on as well.

No no no!
I was not attacked!

I requested an user offering quick reviews, NOT related to the group. And what he said was true and I passed to action quickly, by revoking the FIC and change It all.
So now my writing style is different from the previous one, and I didn't want to receive the same words from the group. Not being a sissy, just to see what else I can improve later with the group reviews.

Also, whoever from the reviewers here was in charge of mine, if he/she checked my first chapter, they could tell It was bad according to my "portuguese writing" (It was just how I was taught :fluttercry:)

410119 Provide me with a picture of the chat log, whether here or in PM, and I'll take a look. If it was someone attacking you, I'll look into it. Unfortunately, unless there's something weird involved, you'll likely have to wait till it's resubmitted. We review a story based upon the point it was submitted, and if you revoke it to edit, then it isn't really at the point it was when it was submitted.

Hey everyone.
So I had one of my stories claimed for a review. "Stolen Technology".
And you must be wondering what happened. I'll tell you.

So one day I received a mail from a member telling me how "bad" I was.
I had to explain of course.
For example, about the "-" between speech, that was how I was taught over 12 years as a portuguese!

And after other things, I decided to revoke my FIC while I change It massively and taking a closer review, as well correcting the mistakes, dialogues and some grammar.
I'm sorry if this caused some problem.
Do I must wait for next time to get it reviewed?

410093 so it is known in advance, I write in a fast pace. I'm trying to slow it down, but you don't think about if nobody is saying anything about it.

410092 Yeah, sorry about that. Our last opening was about a week ago. Once we all get back into the swing of things, we should be able to get some reviews done rather quickly, as we're not a 'read the whole story, give a ten thousand word essay' type of review group. That's one of the perks of this type of review. I'm just too sleep deprived right now to actually formulate any thoughts... saying that, now I'm actually motivated to go and write a review. :twilightsheepish: Anyway, as I was saying, sorry about that. Be sure to keep your eyes open though- the opening warning post, at least last time, went up 24h before we opened, so it's a bit of a shorter period than some other groups.

409865 ah, I was wondering why I couldn't add mine.

409873 Actually, my laptop's wifi card was broken a little while back, so I have to keep it hooked up via Ethernet at all times. So China might be something of an issue.

409867 FimFiction isn't blocked in China, so if Aeluna doesn't make a post it should be fine.

409866 Worry not. Aeluna will (probably) make an announcement of some kind. If s/he forgets, I'll see if I can make a post, but that'll depend on whether or not I'm in China at the time.

409865 alright, thank you!
please give us members a warning once they open again! :)

409864 Submissions are currently locked. Should be open in a week or two.

Hello, why can't I submit my fic? :(
Or where can I. I can't see the "add story" anywhere.
