I just watched the new DarkCrystalSeries on NetFlix. It is very good. I highly recommend it. It had a documentary about its making:

1 of the things that they emphasized is respecting the DNA of the IP. If on does not respect the DNA, the project will fail. That is why the StarWarsSequels failed; they did not respect the DNA and collapsed like a building with a foundation of sand.

Another lesson is that less is more:

They new production uses muppets because it needs visual continuity with the movie and nothing looks more like a muppet than a muppet. That left them with a big problem from the movie:

The facial expressions of the Gelflings were almost but not quite human. This lead to an uneasy creepy feeling called the uncanny valley. ¿Do they replace the Gelfling faces on the muppets with CGI-Faces? ¡No!:

Let us suppose that we have a closeup of a Gelfling lasting a minute. About 1 second of that is retouched using CGI to retouch the frames in someteen or umpteen (more than a dozen (12) but less than a score (20)) micro edits. Basically, a frame here, 5 frames there, 2 frame yon, et cetera. ¡Less is more! That pulls the series out of the uncanny valley, but is very minimal.

By the way, the creepy feeling of the uncanny valley hurt the sales of the original movie, which is a shame because it is good movie, and lead to the next movie, the Labyrinth having human characters.

The StarWarsSequels do overdo the CGI.
