Do we generally lean to prefer the Merpony, as a version of the Mermaid, or the Seapony, as a purely aquatic version of the Pony?

Both the characters and stories would be different, depending on which variant was prefered.

Interestingly enough, there was Seaponies mentioned in olden days of preFiM of MLP mentioned.
