What's "canon AU?" And why have a special group for it?

If you've written one of these, you know the frustration. Is this AU or not? It's set in a canon universe--meaning something that's an official part of the franchise. At the same time, it's an "alternate universe": not the world as seen strictly in the show. You've done your best to keep things canon-compliant, and yet here you are. AU.

So this group exists as a library for fics set in either verse, and also as a spot for people to bounce ideas about headcanons.
