How would you fix the episode Daring Doubt?

In order to “fix” Daring Doubt, you first need to identify the problems. However, if you ask ten people what the problems of Daring Doubt are, you’re going to get, like, four different answers.

Personally, my biggest problem was how the revelation “Ahuizotl is the guardian of the Tenochtitlan Basin’s artifacts” comes right out of nowhere and contradicts his previous portrayals. So I made a headcanon that explains how Ahuizotl turned from a classic villain to a proper guardian offscreen.

Seriff’s Attempt to Reconcile “Daring Doubt” to the *Spectrum* Universe Take #1

Ahuizotl was not always the guardian of the Tenochtitlan Basin’s artifacts. If anything, he was pretty much as Daring portrayed him to be—a conniving thief who liked using artifacts for his own nefarious purposes.

Sometime after “Daring Don’t” and “Daring Do and the Eternal Flower,” Ahuizotl stole an artifact and, unusually for him, managed to keep it from getting repossessed by Daring Do. He managed to hold onto the artifact for longer than usual for once, and it pleased Ahuizotl greatly.

However, he realized too late that the artifact was “cursed.” The artifact was constructed by the Tenochtitlan Basin’s previous civilization at the height of its power. It was meant for the magical induction of new guards charged to protect the civilization’s artifacts. By holding onto it for so long, Ahuizotl discovered, in a vision in his sleep, that he had been inducted into the security force of a civilization that no longer existed.

At first, Ahuizotl was unperturbed. He thought that since the old civilization had collapsed, the magic would have no practical effect on his life. However, he soon discovered that the spirits of the Tenochtitlan Basin were still around. If Ahuizotl failed to exercise his new duty or misused the artifacts under his discretion, the spirits would torment him with nightmares and hallucinations. This effectively marked an end to Ahuizotl’s treasure stealing days.

Ahuizotl was angry and depressed over this change in lifestyle. He made several attempts to weasel his way out of his duty, discovering and studying every magical thing in the Basin to find a loophole. He couldn’t find one. As Ahuizotl resigned himself to his fate, he realized that he subconsciously enjoyed studying the Basin’s artifact. Maybe being a guardian wasn’t so bad…
