(EDIT: an user pointed out to me that they're actually inspired by the Blue Angels, and that may be true but it still doesn't change the fact that they suck at what they do and Spitfire should not instruct anypony seeing how many times she got pwned)

Seriously though, that may be true but the point is that rather than Spitfire they should have made a new character to play the role of a drill instructor seeing how hard Spitfire SUCKS at what she does.
Besides they already have the royal guards to protect the country, so really that still doesn't make much sense to me.

The Wonderbolts are inspired by the Blue Angels, a military aerial group that perform shows in their jets.
She appears as a drill sergeant because they are the equestrian equivalent of The Blue Angels: A small group of soldiers whose job is also to entertain, as well as do what every other soldier does: Protect the country.
