The Alicorn Amulet was first created by King Sombra in an attempt to win over Princess Luna for her hand in marriage. He was insecure about how she would react to him, and overall never had that much confidence in himself. The amulet was made so that he’d have as much power as Luna and Celestia. But alas, Absolute Power Corrupts Absolutely, so when he finished and put it on, he gained the desired power he wanted- but soon quickly forgot his goals, becoming a power hungry tyrant who was only interested in “expanding” the Crystal Empire and making life a living Tartarus for his subjects. By the time the Royal sisters came to put him in his place, Sombra’s old persona was completely gone, leaving only an insane, wicked shell of a unicorn. The sisters locked him up without further hesitation.

He had left the Amulet behind, however, and over the years ponies found it and put it on for various reasons. Though none reached the evil levels that Sombra had, witnesses say that these ponies experienced an immense lust for greed and power. Some had even died while wearing it, already having gone mad with power. Historians and architects kept track of the amulets effects and put out warnings about it, trying to keep it from reaching other ponies. Even so, the cursed amulet made its ways to desperate ponies, who were willing to do whatever it takes to get what they want.

Eventually it was found by the remains of a young mare who’d tried to use it for similar reasons as the creator, and was labeled as an artifact to be put away. The amulet was carried over to a seedy part of Canterlot, where it was taken by a store owner, hoping to one day sell to someone foolish enough to purchase it for a fortune. Oh, but not without faking concern, of course…

So how does the thing actually WORK? Well, let’s use Trixie as our model, with occasional references to Sombra. After first purchasing the Amulet, Trixie went home, and after some hesitation, clasped it around her neck. Then, this happened;

Okay, so she didn’t get green skin or lose any of her cuteness, but you get the idea.:pinkiecrazy:

The amulet automatically gives you power, but also settles its potential for cruelty within your heart, thus causing some physical pain when first placed around your neck. It then over time works its magic and evil throughout your mind and heart. Heck, whatever your original intentions are, they'll more then likely vanish as you eventually come to want nothing more than power and control. After a certain amount of time, if not removed, the amulet essentially destroys whatever goodness (and sanity) you had, and should you die, your soul is unfortunately doomed to Tartarus.:fluttershyouch:

The only way to avoid this fate would be to remove the amulet from your neck, but this is easier said than done. The amulet was built out of dependence and fear, and so it uses this against you in order to remain in control. If you even so much as THINK of taking it off for whatever reason, the amulet then brings forth to your mind an image of your greatest fear, as though “reminding” you that taking it off will result in this fear coming true without the power to prevent it, or that you won’t ever get what you most desire. Trixie was constantly having illusions of ponies laughing at her for being a fraud, so she kept the amulet because she wanted to prove everyone wrong and get her life back to normal. The wearer becomes dependent on the amulet, and so they don’t even realize when its power is chipping away at what you once were…

Even if removed, the evilness that first was planted in your heart still has to fade away. Depending on how long you’ve worn the amulet, it could take a few days, or even an hour for you to come back to your normal self, leaving you to wonder what the heck possessed you to want to rule a totalitarian kingdom (rhetorically, of course) and feeling immense guilt- in fact in some cases ponies have become so distraught about what they’ve done and/or acted like during their time and become depressed for a good chunk of their remaining lives. Fortunately for Trixie, she’d only worn it for a day- 2-3 at the most, so her sanity returned and her evilness diminished after about a few hours, when she looked back on her actions and returned to Ponyville one last time to repent, vowing to herself never to be blinded by vengeance or her own fears.:twilightsmile:
