Goddess Palutena

Palutena: the Goddess of light and Pit's guardian.

Feel free to discus stuff like character design, headcanons, theories, opinions and the sort.

Feel free to post favorite fan art or character specific themes, or whatever so long it's relevant to the topic subject.

I'll be adding my opinion in a tad bit!

I've only just finished Chapter Ten (thanks to "Pokemon X" asserting itself as my 3DS game of choice at the moment x3), so there may be some Big Twists coming I didn't foresee that may change all of what I'm about to say, but....

Palutena strikes me as an amazingly well-realized character, and something I never stop being amazed by is how much nuance the game's script gives her. On the one hand, she is so lighthearted and playful, even in situations others might consider taking more seriously, to the point where she intentionally plays little jokes on, not just Pit, but even her fellow Gods. And yet, on the other, she unquestionably takes her responsibilities as the Goddess of Light seriously, and holds herself responsible when they suffer. It's a remarkably complex dynamic, but the Game gives it so much good, strong play throughout its story (thus far) that it comes off as entirely natural and understandable. It's really awesome.

I've also said it before, but I'll say it again: she and Celestia? Total BFF's.

I'd actually like to know a little more about what Palutena was doing in the 25 years in between games. If you refer to Magnus' and Gaol's backstories, it's pretty obvious that the Underworld attacks didn't stop just because Medusa was defeated. Plus, there's also that one Magnus line from Chapter 2:

Hey, if you’re chatting with your precious goddess, give her a message from me. Tell her she’s been sleeping on the job! Our world is on the edge of collapse!

There aren't any plans for a Kid Icarus game in the foreseeable future, but something tells me that a Magnus and/or Gaol spinoff (either pre- or post-Uprising) would be darker, grittier, and a little more misotheistic.

Uh, were you planning to add something?

2199188 Indeed, and that time is now! (Homehork got the best of me yesterday).

Palutena is actually my least favorite Goddess/God in Kid Icarus: Uprising. I want to set something straight. She's actually kind of... dull. Her jokes are only mildly funny some of the time (except when Viridi made the nerd joke, that killed me. That and the Kraken intro). When compared to Viridi, it seems as though she doesn't even care about pit, and Viridi was at war with Palutena just before the Aurum invasion. The Aurum is what made me like Viridi, as she sent in forces in to help BEFORE Palutena. It literally took Palutena 17 chapters for her to send in one centurion, and then you were killing her forces the next chapter! Not to mention that those forces she sent in were about as tough as the tin foil you wrap around a baked potato. Freaking HADES sent in help (sorta) during the Aurum invasion before Palutena did, and he's trying to kill Pit throughout those chapters still (or at least he keeps hoping he dies).

All in all, Palutena may be Pit's goddess, but she sure is lazy, noncaring, and way overconfident in her abilities. I actually killed her in Chapter 20 on purpose one time just for all the times she's proven to be useless. EVEN WHEN YOU GIVE HER OFFERINGS SHE'S USELESS. WHAT THE HECK.

All in all, Palutena may have some funny moments, but she proves to be my least favorite character in Kid Icarus: Uprising. Yes, I like Medusa more than Palutena. At least she tries harder.

Giving hearts to Viridi doesn't do much of anything either. All it really does is unlock bonus voice clips during levels, particularly about weapon classes (Palutena through chapters 1-16 and Viridi chapters 19 and 20) and a few exchanges between Pit, Hades/Viridi and Palutena (Hades: "Tell me, Pitty Pat. Why exactly can't you fly?" OR Viridi: "You like to eat, don't you Pit?"). I think there are even a few chapter-exclusive unlockable conversations, like in Chapter 6.

And let's be fair here. There's a reason Palutena keeps sending Pit on these missions solo, and that reason is lampshaded during the Chapter 18 boss fight (Magnus: "Your the only member of Palutena's Army that can carry his own weight. Don't even get me started on the Centurions."). Though at least you'll occasionally get a Centurion Assist item in some levels. Oh, and Chapter 17's escort mission is still a mild pain in the ass.

Actually, I'd say that Palutena is at her worst in Chapter 3. She pulls an Independence Day on Hewdraw (if you take too long with the fight) with Pit just a few feet away and she dowses Pit with monster pheromone, knowing full well that it might attract not one, but two Hewdraw heads (Pit: "What?! Are you trying to kill me?!"). I wouldn't say that she doesn't care about Pit, but she does take him for granted, especially in the game's early chapters.
