Marcus is a human in Equestrian, and a member of the Sparkle household, having been adopted as the middle sibling to Shining Armor and the now Princess Twilight Sparkle, and as kids, the three of them were near inseparable. Big Brothers Best Friends Forever Twilight would call them. And through the years, from her first assignment to Ponyville, through the changeling invasion, Tirek, Discord, even the Storm King, Twilight cannot remember a time when Marcus wasn't there by her side being the best he can be in her time of need. From her friends to the denizens of Ponyville, they have all come to know and love their resident human as one of them.

But... how much of that is true?

A freak accident involving Spike and a big codex lands Twilight in the hospital with a mild concussion, but as she awakes, she doesn't recognize Marcus nor could she recall the memories they once shared. In fact, everything had become a jumbled mess. The doctor had passed it off as a temporary amnesia and so did her friends, but Twilight isn't convinced. It was then she started realizing strange change in Marcus, and that look in his eyes would make her blood run cold. How strange occurrences would happen across Ponyville like a pair single pones would suddenly start believing that they were a family with foals of their own, or actual family member not recognizing one another anymore. And everything leads back to Marcus.

As time goes by, Twilight begins to doubt all her memories. Even the years she believed she had spent growing up with Marcus. As her world is turned upside down, as fact and fiction collide, Twilight will be forced to face Marcus and his dark intentions.

And spoiler, yes, Marcus has the power to create, remix and implant false memories. Think of him as a memory vampire who replaces genuine memories with fake ones so he may devour them be it good or bad. As he had led the entire town to believe that he's been Twilight's brother for since they were foals, he's been around for much, much longer than that. What begins is a cat and mouse game between Twilight and Marcus and she's forced separate truth and fiction in a battle to against a being capable of erasing her from the world she had come to know.

And Marcus is kinda an anti-hero, a Moriarty to Sherlock. He believes that by messing with one's cognition, he can make the world a better place. Turn enemies into allies, even friends. Reform villains by removing their bad memories and replacing them with good ones. But it gets twisted when he forces two single ponies together and giving them an orphaned foal while making them believe that they were a family to begin with simply because he believes 'single ponies are selfish and care only about themselves when they there are others on need of love'. Derpy and Dinky would be one of his 'projects'. But his noble intentions are hypocritical as well, as fake memories may lead to genuine memories created by those hoodwinked into believing that those fake memories were real to begin with.

I could see him completely deleting someone’s entire lifetime and leaving them a empty shell to protect himself.

Spooky.

Well, he's been around for a very long time, moving from town to town, family to family. Not to say he hasn't done it before, but the fallout of him swapping genuine memories with fake ones means all his victims are left with only superficial memories and not ones they emotionally treasure. The only reason why he didn't erase Twilight's memory and replace them once again is because he's bored and finds Twilight's struggle to expose him amusing and the idea that a Princess of Equestria is powerless again him. Not to mention, it's the only time in his life he can be himself without pretending.
