How do I make a race exciting?

In written form? Really hard to do. Most ways rely on visual, like trips, avoiding obstacles, constant shifting of positions, etc, etc. I'd suggest to insert what I like to call a gimmick, a mechanism/condition/situation that gives it a little spiff and will give it that little oomph that upgrades from 'a scene chase' to 'the scene where this happened'.

Well if you're into 40K and more mature stories, I might suggest reading "Descent Into Madness." It has some good race sequences in it to take apart for ideas.

Unrelated, but I wish Smash Bros commentators were more like Football commentators: Actually saying what happens and acting like commentators. Not just going "OOOOO! OOOO! DID HE JUST? HE DID! WOAH! MANGO CALM DOWN! AAAAARRRRGH!"
