Chapter 4 – Smiles and Secrets

Penny couldn’t wait for Saturday to happen. Sure, it was only a few days that Penny had to wait for Swift Wind to show up, but to a little girl whose friendship towards her new Pegasus friend knew no limits, an hour seemed like an eternity. There was so much she wanted to say, so much she wanted to do and ask. She found herself unable to think of much else in the day except for meeting her Pegasus friend again.

Finally that day arrived. Penny was so excited; she felt that if she had to wait any longer, she’d explode. She had her homing watch on and active, alerting Swift to her location. She then saw up in the air her Pegasus friend and leapt for joy. Swift circled the house a few times before landing across the street and then trotting over to her.

“Sorry about that,” Swift said, “I had to find a place to land. Your house has lots of trees around it, and I kind of have trouble with them.”

“What trouble?” Penny asked.

“Well when I was first flying, I kind of wasn’t watching where I was going and I crashed into a tree.”

Penny started giggling, but then realized what happened. “Oh, sorry for laughing at you. You weren’t hurt, were you?”

“That’s OK,” Swift said as she put her foreleg around Penny’s shoulder, “You don’t have to be worried about laughing. It was a silly thing, and I wasn’t hurt or anything.”

“Oh, alright,” Penny said as her mind was put to ease, “so, do you want to come in?”

“Sure! Lead the way.”

Penny led Swift into the house as she began to explain the different rooms. Part of it was because Penny didn’t know if a pony had a house like she did, but the other reason was that Penny did very much like her house. “And here’s the dining room where my parents and I eat, here’s the kitchen where mom makes the food, oh and here’s my parents!”

“Hello Penny’s parents!” Swift said as she happily waved to them.

“Hello again Swift.” Penny’s mother said, “Welcome to our house!”

“It’s nice to finally meet you as well,” her dad chimed in, “Penny has been saying so many nice things about you, we wanted to meet her new friend.”

“Thanks. Nice to meet both of you!”

“Well, we’ll leave you two to go and play.” Penny mom’s said, “If you need anything, let us know.”

“OK, mom!” Penny said. The girl thought about playing outside in the backyard. Yet just when she was about to recommend this to Swift, it started to pour. Penny then had to come up with another idea for having fun. Penny noticed the television in the living room. “Hey Swift, want to watch a movie?”

“Sure,” Swift said.

“Hey! Dad! Can we have popcorn? Swift, you want popcorn?”

“Sure!” the Pegasus said.

“I’ll get some for you two then!” her father said as he went into the kitchen.

With two big bowls filled with popcorn and some movie about a fairytale princess playing, the two laughed and had fun together. Finally, as the credits rolled, the two searched for the next thing to do.

“That was a great movie,” Swift said, “what’s next?”

Penny thought for a moment and then an idea popped into her head. “Hey! Do you want to see my bedroom?”

“OK,” Swift said as she followed Penny up the stairs and down the hall until the girl entered a room. Swift gazed in wonder at the bedroom. “So, what do you think?” Penny asked.

It was clear that this room was designed with a little girl in mind. The walls were painted a bubblegum pink while the ceiling was left white. All of her furniture from the headboard of her bed to the little chair by her desk was painted white and had hearts either carved into them or heart shaped holes cut out of them.

“I really like your room,” Swift said, “You must like pink and hearts.”

“Oh yes,” Penny replied, “pink and white are my favorite colors, and I like things with hearts on them.”

Swift then noticed something else that Penny liked. Her room was filled with a myriad of Pegasus items. There were pictures on the wall, stuffed animals on her bed, and figurines on the shelves. There was even a Pegasus themed lamp by her bed.

“Wow! You really have a lot of Pegasus things here.”

“Thanks, Swift. Actually, they’re more than just things I like.”

“Really? How?”

Penny then looked around the room as if she was making sure that no one was watching the two. “Um… Swift? I’ve been keeping your secret, you know, about how you became a pony. Can you keep a secret of mine?”

“Sure Penny! That’s what friends do, right?” Swift said as she gave her a reassuring smile.

“Thanks, Swift.” Penny said, “My secret is that I want to become a Pegasus. I love them so much! They are so pretty and strong, and they can fly. I always wanted to fly. Before I met you, I would talk to my Pegasus things. Then when I met you Swift and learned how you became a pony everything changed! You showed me that there was a way to become what I want to be.”

“Well you’re welcome, but I really didn’t do anything. I just saw you at the park and wanted to say hello. But I’m glad that you want to be a Pegasus. Have you told your parents about it?”

“Not yet,” Penny said, “I’m still thinking about how to tell them.”

“Well if you need my help explaining to your mom and about becoming a Pegasus I can help.”

“But you’d be telling your secret about how you became a pony, wouldn’t you?”

“Well it’s not that big of a secret,” Swift replied, “and if it means helping you become a Pegasus, I’d be glad to do it!”

With that the two friends hugged each other. Meanwhile, outside the door Penny’s mom was listening to the two talking to each other before quietly moving away and back down the hall a smile on her face. “I think that we should tell her tonight at supper,” her mom said to Penny’s father.

“Maybe we should invite Swift to stay for that,” her dad replied, “I’m sure her will be excited about the news as much as Penny will.”

“OK, I’ll ask,” her mom said as she returned to Penny’s door. She then gave a light knock so as not to disturb the two.

“Come in,” Penny said, knowing it was either of her parents.

“Penny, we’re going to be having dinner soon. Swift, do you want to join us?”

“Sure, Penny’s mom!” Swift said.

“Alright then,” her mom said, “I’ll be calling you two soon.”

Penny's mom left the two as they giggled and laughed and played. Her mom knew that the announcement that was going to be made around the dinner was sure to bring the two friends even closer together.
