The Search for Hope

The End of The Earth

It was blinding, the light.

It was hard to describe, it would occasionally be very bright, but then flutter out of existence as if something would go over it every so often. It was nice, he wasn't sure why, but the rhythmic way the light came and went seemed to calm him down.

Over time he began to realize he felt something soft over his body, like a blanket, it was then that he opened his eyes to see his surrounding.

He was in his room, he looked around seeing all of his possessions, but something was different, he couldn't quite tell what it was, everything seemed hyper realistic, but couldn't tell for the life of him how he thought of that description, then a sudden thought came to him, he couldn't remember his name.

Well he knew he was male, and that he was human, but for the whole time didn't once concern him till now that he couldn't remember his name, he began to get out of bed when his hand bumped into something, soft. What you didn't expect how ever was a voice to come from it.

"Mark, why you leaving the bed, it's so comfortable." the voice said. His, or should we now say, Mark's heart skip a beat, his mind still slow he realized one thing, he knew this voice, of course the fact that she said his name was one thing, but he know that voice, and the thing that made him confused was the fact he couldn't place the voice.

The covers came up and all he had time to register was a flash of red and the side of his body being crushed in.

"Come on Mark, i'm not letting you escape from m.." That's when she stopped, because she got to see a clear view of his face, at first she was confused, then it turned to concern. He also got a good look at her.

She appeared to be in her mid 20's, she had lovely wavy auburn hair and the clearest blue eyes, he could tell that the world smiled when she smiled, however, her face wasn't smiling right now.

"What's wrong Marky? You look as white as a ghost, is it that job interview today, don't worry hon, you got this in the bag." She noticed your confusion.

"You remember the big important job interview right?" She looked even more concern, mark felt bad about making this women feel bad, but he couldn't really place the feeling while he didn't even know her name. That's when Mark decided to chime in with his questions.

Mark get out of the bed to get some space from her, "I'm sorry, but who are you, I mean, you must know me, but I don't know you." Her face looks shocked, then confused, that quickly switched to anger.

"Come on Mark, if this is another one of your little pranks this isn't funny, if you don't want to go to that job interview you don't have too." but one look at his face she stops and then returns to concern.

"Ok, listen, do you know my name?" As she continued to get out bed while going towards Mark.

"No, I can't remember anything, I didn't even know my own name till you said it, what's your name?" Mark was looking around for anything to help jog his memory, but everything he looked at was just an object, nothing with sentimental value.

"My name is Shara, remember, we met our freshmen year of college, we both went to MIT and got decrees there." At this point Shara had reached Mark and was trying to look him in the eye's, but was confused with what she saw, they were flashing. She scampered back and fell on the bed.

"Mark, what's wrong with your eyes?" At this point she began to look scared, but not for herself, but for him.

Mark couldn't tell what was wrong with his eyes, but every time he blinked everything began to grow dim until he could barely see anything, he promptly fell to the ground. Shara hurried over to him, "come on stay with me, stay with me." She was on the verge of panic and tears, but you couldn't stop himself from slipping away.

The last thing he saw was her face as she realized that he was gone.

He never wanted to see that face again.

Mark woke up with a start, his heart pounding and a very loud ringing in his ears. He began to panic and looked around the room, realizing where he was.

He was in Florida and he was getting ready to leave Earth.

His memories came flooding back to him, his name was Mark A. Edwards, his father and mother had both been in the air force and when he graduated from high school that's where it lead him too, however after a year of service Mark had realized that he wanted to go back to college to get a degree. He then talked to his officers about this and sturke luck when he was able to go to MIT with a full paid scholarship.

The things that happened in his dreams came back to him, and he was confused. Who was this women, and why is she in my dreams. The thing that confused Mark the most was he barely remembered his dreams at all, but this one he remembered the whole thing, he remembered waking up confused, at waking her up, then of dieing. The last part made Mark shiver, it was a uncomfortable feeling as if everything that was him began to grow cold and slow. Mark shook his head, now was not the time to be thinking of stuff like that.

Reorganizing his thoughts he decided to do a technique his therapist had taught him which involved going to a specific point in the past and going back to know, and he did just that.

About a year ago, Mark had been working at NASA working on their main systems, what made him favorable in NASA was he was a qualified Astronaut who had in his right way designed the new system for the space stations that were being made, at the time however he didn't know how extremely important these space stations were.

That's when the head of NASA called him in, what he wasn't expecting however was the president of the UFH there, and they dropped a bombshell on him. They explained about the asteroid heading there way and how the space stations were going to be used as escape vessels to get off Earth. The reason however they called him in was very simple in fact, because he was the one who designed the whole system and he was an experience pilot, they wanted to make him head of the evacuation project which was called, "Project: Eve". Of course Mark told them yes, he couldn't see who would give up the chance to help save humanity, but then here's the kicker, they wanted him to be put in one the ships as a Engineer Specialist, in a sense, he would be in charge of keeping the ship online when and if they reached a habitable planet.

For several minutes Mark just sat there shocked at what they were saying, of course in the end he agreed to do it, there was literally no reason to, but that didn't stop him from just laying in a corner for several hours trying to make sense of what just happened.

That was a year ago, now was finally the day to leave. Mark barely had any training to do considering the fact he designed the damn thing, but he still did a standard training session every week for survival in case of any situation, however, Mark had received this training before when he became an astronaut.

Bringing himself back to the present, while he was thinking he had gotten dressed and finished packing his belongings, however small the amount was. Both of his parents had died during the outbreak that had occurred a couple years prior, and he still missed them dearly, but now was the time to start looking ahead.

Of all the possessions he had, he only had a photo of him with his parents, and that was it. Mark learned from a young age to keep things simple, and that's what he did.

He had reached the main hall where he was to put his belongings with his crate which would be put onto the space station and sealed with a nitrogen seal. Looking around he realized quickly he just wanted to get out of there, for the more he had time to think about what he was doing the more he felt like he was closing inside himself. Looking around he realized that the people around him would be the only sentient life he would know for the rest of his life.

He stopped himself from continuing, no, he would not think like that, thinking like that would make him crazy, he needed to let his Astronaut training kick in and just focus on the mission.

A loud popping sound came from above and a gruff voice came over a loud speaker, "Ok listen up, if your apart of the engineering team of Ship Kibo please goto room 49-A to get ready for Cryogenically frozen." Mark laughed at the ship name, in his first year of MIT he learned some Japanese, of course he failed miserably, but one of the words he was able to learn was Kibo, meaning hope.

Mark realized that there really wasn't any point delaying it, he made his way to room 49-A. While everyone else was taking their time, Mark went straight to the room, only to make if first. He knocked on the door and a voice answered back, "Enter"

Mark stepped into the room, the man already inside looked up from his clipboard and smiled, "Well Mark, of course you would be the first one to make it, you feeling alright?" A look of concern flashed on the scientist face, but as vanished as quickly as it came.

"Yeah, just want to get this over with, the more time I stay here the more I panic." Mark hadn't realized before, but he was starting to have a panic attack, he closed his eyes and slowed his breathing, he could have a panic attack later, but let's get to space first.

The scientist motioned for Mark to come over to where he was and started going down the medical check list, after finishing that he made Mark naked and began the cryogenic procedure.

The scientist started by getting Mark into the cryo bed and configuring the box with his medical records, mark realized that he was starting to panic, all he felt was the cold touch of the metal box that was to be his internal coffin, the scientist must have noticed his discomfort because he stopped and began to talk to Mark.

"Listen Mark, you don't have anything to worry, I have much confidence your ship will find a planet." Mark however responded by saying, "Well that's probably not going to happen for a long time," The scientist chuckled and said, probably, but at least you will get to see another world," Mark smiled at that, well if they did find one, at least he could say that.

The scientist had finished setting up the cryo pod and he was ready to activate it, "Ok Mark, i'm ready to start the Cryo Sequence, are you ready?" Of course Mark wasn't ready, but he realized that if he got to the point where he was ready, he would surely die of old age. Without looking back at the scientist he nodded his head.

The scientist sighed and started the sequence, all Mark heard was a soft humming coming from all around him as the cryo pod turned on, "Mark, i'm going to close it now, the cryo pod is going to knock you out with a anesthesia before it freezes you, so godspeed with you." Before Mark could say another word the scientist had closed it, he then realized that he never asked him his name and now he would never know it.

A sizzling sound started to occur and mark realized he was about to go under.

His thoughts started to slow to a crawl to a halt, he could barely think anymore although one thing was still stuck on his mind as his consciousness started to go.

He would probably never wake up.
