Along Came A Spider

by Onomonopia

Stakeout

Even though he had no lights to guide him, Spiderman was still able to steer through the midnight lit sea thanks to his spider sense. Once he was certain that Coco would be in the boutique for the rest of the night, he had donned his suit and swung out to the docks. After he had "accommodated" a boat for him to use, he had immediately set out for where the deal was supposed to go down.

'But I will have to move quickly,' Spiderman thought to himself as the boat came to a stop next to the island, next to a shadowy part of the island where no one would park a boat. So that's exactly what Spiderman did and a moment later he had leapt out of his boat and scaled the concrete base of the island, flipping up with every sense on alert. He quickly scanned around to see if anyone was there and when there wasn't he leapt up onto a large statue, crouching down low in the darkness so that he couldn't be seen.

'The creator behind these monsters will be on guard regardless of my actions, but the fact that there is no one here to meet him will definitely raise his alertness,' Spiderman planned out as he waited for his foe to arrive. 'And I highly doubt that he would come here alone. One does not create such monsters without having at least some degree of intelligence.'

'But I am ready. He has caught me off guard with his last two monsters, I will admit. Now it is my turn to catch him off guard,' Spiderman thought to himself as the biting cold of the air managed to penetrate his suit. He shivered slightly before banishing the thoughts of weakness.

For an hour he sat alone in completely silence, going over multiple plans and possibilities of how the battle that he was certain would ensure. Then, through the fog that covered the sea, Spiderman spied a pair of lights moving through the fog. He crouched down slightly as the lights approached the docks near the other end of the small island. A moment later the lights vanished, yet were replaced by the sounds of hooves walking towards the center of the island.

'But there are not four sets of hooves. Only two,' Spiderman realized after a few seconds of hearing the hoofsteps get closer. With the little light that he had being cast from the moon above, Spiderman narrowed his eyes as a being stepped into the area beneath the statue.

It stood on two legs that were covered in fur, with a pair of hooves so red that they shined like blood in the moonlight. The upper half of the creature was armored by scales, scales that reminded Spiderman of the snake monster that he had battled with. Yet Spiderman's eyes were drawn to the head of the beast, a head that was covered by a clothe mask that fluttered in the biting breeze.

'A satyr?' Spiderman thought to himself as he tried to classify the creature that was before him. Yet he only had a moment to study the monster before two other creatures flanked the beast. One of them looked like a bear, except that it had a body composed of metal instead of flesh. The other creature had mantis like limbs, but the body was one of a wolf that was made of wood. Both of the creatures made Spiderman's eyes narrowed, but as the satyr beast began to look around the clearing, Spiderman took comfort in knowing that he was well hidden.

'Perhaps I should rethink my strategy,' Spiderman considered as the satyr nodded to his two guards and they began to look around the area. 'The master alone will not be hard to deal with, but his two lackeys might give me trouble. But if I can time this just right-'

"Ow," Spiderman muttered as he felt something bite him on the back of the neck and he swatted at his neck. 'Cursed bugs, managing to bite even in the middle of the night.'

Spiderman turned his attention back to the beast, but to his surprise he found that the beast was standing alone with both of his guards gone. 'What are you doing?' the spider thought to himself before the beast turned his cloaked head towards where the spider was laying in wait, his gaze causing Spiderman to crouch down a little further.

"I know that you are up there, Spider. Come on down so that we may talk," the beast called up to Spiderman with a voice that burned with such intensity that Spiderman forgot all about the cold of the night. Figuring that there was no point in hiding any longer, Spiderman launched himself out of his hiding place and into the sky. Yet he had barely began his descent before he took aim and fired strands of webbing towards the beast, with the intention of finishing this there and then.

Yet to his annoyance, the moment he opened fire the mantis covered in bark appeared in front of its master and sliced through the webbing. Spiderman snarled before a roar set off his sense and he snapped his head to the side to see the bear creature right next to him, but now with a pair of wings larger than the bear attached to its back. Spiderman spun out of the way of a claw strike before he landed on the ground without a sound, while the bear impacted with the sound of metal striking cement.

"Well that was very rude of you," the beast said to Spiderman, whose eyes narrowed beneath his mask as he stared down at the beast and his two monsters. "But fortunately for you, I am far more patient and understanding than the two right here that wish to rip you to shreds. And if you try anything stupid like that again, I will allow them to."

"And then I would do to them what I have done to the other two that you have set to fight me," Spiderman said in a deadly cold tone that was far more bitter than the air around him. "But I will allow a momentary truce so that I can find out who you are before I beat you into a coma."

"How very kind of you. Allow me to return the kindness by filling in that information for you," the beast replied. Even though Spiderman couldn't see his face, he knew that he was smiling behind the mask. "I will not give you my name and I am sure you understand why. Simply call me...I don't know, what kind of name would a hero like you give a villain such as me?"

"Dead man."

With a speed that caught the three monsters off guard, Spiderman shot impact webbing into the face of the lackeys that flanked the beast in the mask. The two creatures roared with pain and anger as they tried to claw the webbing out of their eyes, giving Spiderman a clear shot at the beast in the center. He leapt forward with his strength and reached the beast in a second, slamming his hoof into his clothe mask. The force of the blow sent the beast flying backwards, while Spiderman stood with a smirk under his mask.

"Fool. Talking with the hero and leaving yourself open? Is this your first time being a villain or are you just this stupid?" Spiderman inquired as he shot out four shots of webbing, one of each of the limbs of the beast. Once his foe was securely pinned to the ground, Spiderman spun around and shot webbing at the other two monsters and hindered their movements.

"Actually, you do not need to tell me. It doesn't matter in the least," Spiderman said with a laugh as he walked up to his pinned foe, kicking him in the gut for good measure before he crouched down next to him. "So while your grade school science projects try to wrap their minds around being bound, how about I take you to where you'll be spending the rest of your life?"

"Spider, I assume you are a smart pony. Or at least you talk like one. Did you really think that I came here tonight because of a deal to buy some imprisoned fools? No. I did it to draw you out," the beast said with a small chuckle that made Spiderman growl. "See, you heroes all have the same weakness. Well, multiple weaknesses, but I'll focus on just one. That when you see you chance to take down the villain you'll take it, regardless of what might lie in wait."

"You are simply stalling. It will not save you. I have used my stronger webbing to bind both you and those test tube failures that you brought with you," Spiderman clarified for the beast. "Now then, before I take you in, I want to see why a beast like yourself would hide behind a mask? An effort to hide your identity? Or perhaps you are so ugly that you do not wish any to see your face?"

"Are you new at being a hero? You don't get to learn my origin story until at least the third battle," the beast cackled before he seemed to think about something. "But the Beast...that is not bad. Very well, Spider, call me the beast."

"I will call you whatever I feel like, after I-"

His spider sense blared like an alarm, but Spiderman reacted a second too slow and caught a massive paw to the side of his head that sent him hurtling across the concrete ground. He spun in the air and landed upon his hooves, eyes narrowing when he saw that the both the bear and the mantis had managed to escape his webbing. But then his eyes narrowed further when he spied something invisible clawing away at the webbing holding down the Beast.

"Of course. You had a third one that you were keeping in reserve," Spiderman figured out while he mentally kicked himself for not looking for another minion. He saw the faint outline of something standing next to the Beast as he stood up, telling Spiderman that whatever it was had the ability to either cloak or blend in with its surroundings. "I will concede that point to you, but bring all of the backup that you want. It will not save you from me."

"My my, from the way you are speaking, you sound more like a villain than me," the Beast said with a laugh before his head bent over slightly and his whole body seemed to grow bigger for a moment. "When in actually you are a specimen, a creature with powers for me to observe and possible mimic. Do not think of yourself as anything more than my plaything."

"Now who is sounding like a villain?" Spiderman asked, yet the entire time that the Beast had been speaking to him Spiderman had been planning out his attack plan. Yet after his momentary moment of evil, the Beast then slowly began to back away from the Spider.

"But the only way you will gather data for me is if you are allowed to roam free. So either you will defeat my two monsters here and live on to continue the experiment...or you will die and I will be rid of a pain in my side. Either way, it is a win for me."

"I will not let you get away!" Spiderman roared as he lunged forward, but he had to leap up a moment later to dodge a wing that sliced both through the air and through the material that made up the suit. Spiderman snarled as he leapt back away from the bear with the wings, while also noticing that the mantis wolf was circling around behind him.

'And like that he is gone,' Spiderman noticed as he glanced over at where the Beast had been standing. 'Was I that annoying to catch back when I-?'

His spider sense brought him back to reality and he leapt into the air to avoid a slash from the mantis wolf. Spiderman spun in the air and fired two more shots of impact webbing into the wooden face of the wolf, sending in staggering backwards with roars of pain. Spiderman landed a moment later and fired webbing around the legs of the mantis wolf and swung it around into the bear creature. The metal bear didn't even flinch from the impact of the creature, but Spiderman hadn't been planning on the impact taking down the bear.

"Clearly your master is the only one among you with any intelligence," Spiderman snarled at the beasts as he fired all of the remaining webbing with his cartridges at the two monsters, binding the both of them together with enough webbing so that neither could break free. He then raced up to the trapped beast and kicked the both of them with all of his might, sending the both of them hurling off of the island. He glanced into the waters to see the two monsters struggling to remain above water, smirking at them before he turned back to the island.

'And the others are gone,' Spiderman thought to himself as he looked around, unable to find any trace of the Beast or the other monster that he had with him. Spiderman walked over to the dock where the lights had been coming from, but with a snarl he found nothing there. 'He managed to escape me despite how quickly I took down his monsters. He is very skilled at slipping away it seems.'

With nothing else that he could do, Spiderman returned to the boat that he had borrowed and began to head back to the city of Manehatten. 'But he is far more intelligent than I believed. He laid a trap for me that I walked into and then he seemed to have gotten what he wanted from our confrontation. I do not know what, but I have been where he has stood and done the exact same thing. He will be a tough one to be rid of, but I can defeat him. It is only a matter of time.'

"Hmm, perhaps I made a bit of an error bringing those two with me to the battle. Next time I should bring weapons with me that are a little older than a week," the Beast thought to himself as he glanced at the two empty spots that had been occupied a few hours prior. "Oh well, they lost to the Spider and let me escape. That makes them a successful experiment."

The Beast then walked over to a small table at the edge of his laboratory, sitting down on a chair and thinking about what he had seen. 'But he is clearly hiding more abilities that I did not know of. The way he reacts to danger is far faster than any being should be able to do. It is like he knows the danger is there before it happens. Just another features that makes me more interested in his abilities.'

Then the satyr held out his hand and a small fly flew over to him. It landed in his palm and the Beast looked over to it, spying a small pool of red liquid within the clear stomach of the insect. A smile spread beneath the clothe that covered his face as he placed the fly on the table.

"And I cannot wait to see what I can do with them."
