Chapter 16: She's The One

"Soarin. We need to talk."

Soarin's head turned as he grazed his eyes over the golden mare standing in the doorway to the balcony. He nervously licked his lips and beckoned her forward. Spitfire placed her hooves on the railing as the two stood in silence for quite some time. Soon, Spitfire broke the ice with a question that made Soarin shudder.

"Who's the girl?" she asked. Soarin's eyes closed as he looked at Spitfire.

"Spitty..."

"Nuh-uh," Spitfire interrupted. "One, I don't want to hear it, and two, I don't want to hear that nickname escape your lips anytime soon, got it?" This made Soarin smile.

"Alright, alright," he said, before taking a deep breath.

"So?" Spitfire asked again. "Who is she?"

"W-Well, her name's R-Rainbow Dash..." Soarin started, stammering out his words like they were poison threatening to drop onto his tongue. Spitfire nodded encouragingly.

"Yes? What else?" she asked.

"She lives in Ponyville," Soarin said, becoming more confident with his words. "And she has a little sister named Scootaloo who Speedy has a threateningly large crush on." Soarin chuckled inwardly, as Spitfire smiled.

"Aha, that's adorable," she said softly, looking into his eyes. Soarin raised an eyebrow.

"Spitifre? Is something wrong?" he asked. She shook her head quickly. "Oh come on, you know I know you better than that, tell your Uncle Soarin what's the matter."

"Uncle Soarin?!"

"Answer the question."

Spitfire inhaled, before closing her eyes and looking at the baby-blue stallion who had an increasingly worried facial expression plastered across his face.

"Well, I'm just finding out now that the guy I've been pondering over for years likes somepony else!" she suddenly blurted out. "And boy that sure feels wonderful."

Soarin froze.

"Wha... what?"

Spitfire's cheeks instantly started burning a bright shade of pink. She gasped as she realized what had just slipped out of her mouth.

"Uh... I..." She stumbled over her words, not knowing what to say. Soarin was shaking slightly as he looked at her with wide eyes. His gaze suddenly softened.

"Spits... why didn't you tell me?" he asked softly. Spitfire shut her eyes tightly closed, tears threatening to escape.

"Well, you know I've never been very good around my words... and I couldn't stand the thought of rejection," she explained quietly. "Though judging by what happened back there, turns out that's all I'm getting."

Soarin sighed as he pulled in his best friend for a bear-hug. Spitfire sniffled into his coat and shook her head.

"So what if the stallion I've liked for so long likes someone else?" she mumbled. "It's my own fault for not acting sooner... I should have told you before all of this, Soar. I'm sorry.

"Shut it, you have absolutely nothing to apologize for," Soarin cut in harshly. "Spitfire, I'm the one who should be sorry... I'm so, so... so sorry about all of this."

"I heard she's from Ponyville," Spitfire said, breaking away from his embrace as Soarin nodded.

"That's right..." he said softly. "And... Father hates her, so I... I don't know..."

Spitfire smiled softly.

"It'll be alright..." she said. "I know it will."

"Are you ready to get going?" Cloudy asked, looking over to Spitfire as the two stood outside the cloud mansion. Spitfire nodded enthusiastically.

"Oh yeah! After talking to Soarin, I'm more than ready to finally, personally, meet Rainbow Dash," she said. Cloudy nodded.

"We have mutual feelings then, come on!" she exclaimed, before spreading out her wings and taking flight, Spitfire tagging behind her shortly after.

When the two arrived in Ponyville, they instantly began asking around for the rainbow-maned mare, trying to desperately find her.

"Have you seen Rainbow Dash anywhere?"

"Do you know where Rainbow Dash could be?"

"Where does Rainbow Dash live?"

"She's right over there," somepony suddenly said, gesturing over to said mare who was currently doing a few tricks in the sky. Cloudy and Spitfire looked at each other, both bearing impressed looks.

"Uh... Rainbow Dash?" Spitfire suddenly called out; she and Cloudy both moving towards her. Rainbow Dash's ears perked up in surprise, as she looked below her to see the faces of two of her idols.

She squealed.

"C-C-C-Cloud-dy Q-Q-Quar-rt-tz? Sp-p-pit-tfir-re?" she stammered out. Cloudy smiled up at her, before raising herself off the ground and flying up to her.

"That's us!" she said. Spitfire nodded, following the older mare.

"We... uh... wanted to talk to you," she said. Rainbow Dash tilted her head in confusion.

"What? Why?" She couldn't understand why two of the most elite Wonderbolts wanted to talk to her. Sure, she was used to prestigious presence, being around Soarin so much. But it was still a little shocking.

"It's about... Soarin..." Cloudy said, as the three went to sit on a nearby cloud. Rainbow Dash instantly blushed profusely.

"Oh! Uh... what about him?" she asked nervously. Spitfire smiled fondly.

"He's kinda... head over hooves for ya', Rainbow Dash," she said. Dash's eyes widened further.

"W-W-W-W-What-t?" she stammered, getting more anxious by the second. Cloudy let out a soft giggle.

"You two would be so cute together," she said, before her smile faltered. "But... there's something you need to know."

Dash quirked her eyebrows. "What?"

Spitfire bit her lip.

"You see... Rainbow Dash, Soarin's father, Spectrum, has a crazy plan of getting him married... to me."

Dash's expression dropped, fear creeping into her eyes.

"W-W-W-What?" she asked. "B-B-But... So-oarin..." She closed her eyes. "No..."

Spitfire frowned. "I'm sorry..."

"Oh trust me, I am too," Rainbow Dash suddenly said, looking up. "He was just... he was playing me this entire time! I should have suspected it sooner... bad boys in the business will always-"

"What?! No!" Cloudy cut in. "He didn't know, Rainbow Dash!"

Dash's eyes softened. "Oh... sorry."

"It's fine."

"So... what now? What am I supposed to do?" Dash asked. Cloudy sighed.

"I... I'm not sure... I know how much you two love each other..."

Dash's eyes widened as she said those words, but didn't protest to the idea, making Cloudy smile.

"I don't know, Rainbow Dash. I suppose... I suppose Soarin will have to tell Spectrum about his feelings... and after that, we can only hope for the best, okay?"

Dash nodded in response, gulping back tears.

"We better head back to Clousdale," Spitfire said. Cloudy looked at her, and nodded.

"You're right. Ponies will start wondering where we are," she said, before turning back to Rainbow Dash. "Don't worry... things will turn out fine. Trust me."

"... Thank you..."
