OC Origins: Lightning Crystal

by Lightning Crystal

I want to tell you a story

I was waiting silently in my house for my friends Vinyl, Octavia, Lyra, and Bon Bon to arrive, they wanted to talk to me about something, I didn’t know what. Eventually I heard a knock on my door and answered it.

“Yo Light, what’s up!” I heard Vinyl say just as she tackled me to the ground in a hug. “Dude I missed you.”

“I missed you too Vinyl.” I replied with a soft smile like I always did. “How was your tour?”

“It was fine, got kinda boring without you around.” Vinyl got up off of me, and I soon followed after, there I saw my friends.

“Hey Octavia.” I spoke in a polite manner.

“Hello to you too Lightning.” Octavia replied in her usual upperclass tone of voice.

“Lightning, I missed you.” Lyra said followed by Bon Bon, they both walked in and I lead them all to my kitchen.

“This is such a nice place you have Lightning, how’d you get it?” Bon Bon inquired. I lived in a tree, it was hollowed out enough to build a house, along with it being thick and tall enough, kind of like the library that was once in the middle of town, from what I heard.

“Well it was the only available house in Ponyville.” I laughed at that, it wasn’t really in Ponyville fully, it was right on the edge of it, but it was nice, peaceful too, with the river just a few yards away at the back of my house.

“Well it is quite nice, it must have cost a fortune.” Octavia added.

“Well not Really, it was only around twenty five hundred bits.” I replied, and then I saw al of them with a surprised look on their faces.

“It was that cheap, impressive.” Lyra said.

“Yeah I guess.” I sighed a bit but then looked at them with a smile. “So how was all of your trips’ around Equestria?” I asked sounding as happy as I could.

“Lightning, something on your mind?” Vinyl asked. I guess it was pretty obvious I wasn’t acting like my usual self.

“Listen, girls, I want to tell you a story.” I said sitting down on a chair and I started my story.

My parents names were Open Wing, and SkyLine, they were amazing ponies. I was actually a miracle to them, they wanted to have foals so badly, but were told they couldn’t so it came as a surprise to have me. They named me Lightning Crystal, they decided it fited, because I came into their lives so fast, and I was special to them, like a crystal.

A couple years after I was born, they had my sister named her Thunder Mist, she was a nice filly, was happy to be alive, and very rambunctious.

“Big Bro, guess what.” Mist said to me one day as I was getting ready for school.

“What is it Misty?” I asked, calling her the nickname she so despised.

“I told you not to call me that.” She had an annoyed look on her face. “Anyways, i’m making you breakfast.” I looked at her and smiled.

“Thanks sis, you know your cooking is the best ever.” She smiled at me. After I got ready I headed downstairs and saw my mom and dad talking to one another.

“I think it’s time dear.” My mom said.

“I don’t know.” My dad replied.

“You don’t know what dad?” I asked as I took a seat, my hooves falling on the soft cloud house we lived in.

“Son.” My dad spoke to me in a serious tone. “I am giving you this.” My dad went to a closet and pulled out a pitch black cloak, it was so cool looking, there was no designs, just black.

“No way, what is it?” I asked at the time not knowing what a cloak was.

“It is my cloak, it was given to me by my father, and his father before him, when we reach your age.”

“Whoa.” I smiled happily. “So is this my birthday present?”

“Yes, in a way, it is, happy sixth birthday son.” My family all hugged and kissed me, I wanted to wear the cloak to school, but it was too big on me, so I just went without it for three years.

A couple days after I was able to wear it with it fitting good I went flying with it, it looked so cool flapping in the wind behind me. I wasn’t paying attention to where I was going cause I crashed into somepony, we both fell to the clouds.

“Ow, what was that for!” I heard a colt shout at me, he sounded to be around my age.

“Sorry, I wasn’t paying attention!” I called back at him, we both looked at each other with big bruises on our faces.

“Hey, my name’s Cloud Wing, what’s your name?”

“I’m Lightning Crystal.”

We both talked for a while and became friends, we went flying with each other basically everyday, he got his cutiemark before me. It was a cloud in the shape of a wing, he got it after he sculpted a cloud.

“I bet you’re jealous of me huh Crystal?” He asked in a mocking tone.

“Well yeah kinda.” I replied honestly. “I mean, I still don’t know what my talent is.”

“Hey don’t worry buddy, you’ll find it soon enough, remember, there are still a lot of kids that don’t have their marks yet.” He reassured me.

“Yeah, thanks.” I smiled at him as we flew.

“Hey look out!” He yelled at me. I saw that I was headed straight for some trees since we were flying near the ground with permission from our parents, I flew head first into them, my cloak caught on some branches and got a lot of holes in it, I came out the other side fine.

“Oh no, oh no, my cloak!” I shouted scared.

“What’s the problem with that?” Cloud asked me.

“My dad gave me this, it’s a family tradition.” I sniffed.

“Hey, these holes don’t look too bad, maybe you could fix it.”

“Okay, i’ll try, i’ve never sewed before.” We both headed back up to Cloudsdale and we stopped by a clothing store, I asked the mare running the place if I could use one of her machines to fix my cloak and she agreed, so long as we cleaned up afterwards.

I sat down and started work on my cloak, I was pretty bad at it when I started, but after a minute or two I got the hang of it really well, and fixed my cloak like nothing ever happened to it.

“Umm dude.” Cloud said.

“What is it?” I asked.

“You got your cutiemark!” He pointed at my flank and I looked, I never smiled bigger than that before, it was my cutiemark, a lightning bolt made of yellow crystal.

I flew all the way home as fast as I could so I could show my family, they were all so happy for me, I told them what happened and they guessed my talent was making clothes. After a couple more days of thinking, my parents told me my talent might be getting the hang of various tasks quickly.

“But that’s absurd.” My dad said as he laughed a hearty laugh.

“I think it’s making clothes.” I said with a smile. My mom and dad patted my head and smiled at me.

A couple years later I was fifteen me and Cloud got pretty cocky at that time, we both agreed that we’d get in the wonderbolts no matter what it took. We trained every day, making sure to come up with new stunts to pull.

“Hey Lightning, let’s make a tornado.” Cloud said with a confident smirk.

In my mind I knew we weren’t ready, but I was cocky, and arrogant, so I pushed those thoughts aside. “We totally should, we’ve got an audience today.” I pointed at the various ponies looking at us train, giving us encouragement.

We then did our usual routine, flying close to one another, flying by and touching wings, one trick we liked we flew head first at one another then we quickly turned around and bucked off of each other’s hind hooves.

“Now!” Cloud called. We both then flew in a circle, we made sure it was small, but soon enough, it got too big for us to control.

Cloud flew away quickly shouting that he would go get help, I shouted at the ponies watching to fly away as quickly as possible, I was panicked, I saw many ponies get away, but that was before I was sucked in. I tried my best to fly out, but it was too strong, I felt it pulling at my wings, then I felt a terrible pain on my back.

The tornado was ripping off my wings, I could feel my flesh being ripped open, along with hearing the shouts of many ponies. I figured they were all worried for me, but what I didn’t know is that some weaker flying ponies were sucked in as well. The wonderbolts showed up along with guards and managed to get the tornado to disband, I was happy, until I was flung into the side of a cliff.

“Quickly, get the injured to hospitals right away.” I could hear ponies shouting, I looked around my vision blurry. I saw my parents laying motionless.

“No.” I said softly to myself, as I painfully dragged myself to them. “Mom, dad.” I felt tears rise up on my face, when I got there I saw something I wish I never saw. They were bleeding heavily, their eyes sunken and lifeless, not breathing.

I felt a guard pick me up and cover my eyes. “You, you probably shouldn’t see that.” He spoke to me in a soft voice. “This one’s alive, the, only one alive.” Those words hit me like a stone, ‘the only one alive’ I went limp.

I was taken to Canterlot where I could be taken care of, get myself healed. “You are lucky to be alive young colt.” The doctor said in an accent I couldn’t quite place my hoof on. “That tornado was serious business, we know it was an accident.” He smiled at me softly.

“Did, my sister make it?” I asked in a hoarse voice.

“Yes she did, she is waiting to talk to you.” The doctor turned to a nurse. “Bring her in.” The nurse left and soon after came back followed by my sister.

“Hey Mis-” I began, but before I could finish speaking my sister cut me off.

“I hate you!” She shouted at me. “I hate you so much, you killed our parents!” She was crying, and in a rage at the same time. “It should have been you, you should have been the one that died!”

I looked at Misty with tears in my eyes, she hated me so much, blaming me for our parents’ deaths. “Misty I didn’t.”

“No!” She looked turned to the door. “Don’t ever call me that again, don’t ever speak to me again, I hate you.” She started to leave, showing that she had no care for me at all. “For all I care, all of my family died in that tornado, I don’t have a brother.” She left leaving me, the doctor, and the nurse there in silence.

“Young colt.” The doctor spoke up after a while. “We can fix your wings, it would just take a quick spell.”

“No.” I said with a deadpan expression. “I don’t want to fly anymore, she’s right, it was my fault, I should be dead right now.”

I was in the hospital for a few weeks before I was sent back to Cloudsdale, somepony decided to watch over me to make sure I didn’t go insane. The sad truth was I wanted to die then, after they knew I was going to be okay I walked to the edge of cloudsdale, my cloak flapping in the wind.

“Goodbye Equestria, goodbye to you Cloud Wing, my ‘friend’ you said you went to go get help, you liar, you left me for dead, and now you’re missing, thanks.” I took a step closer to the edge with the intent to jump. I closed my eyes, and I leapt off of the floating cloud city plummeting to the trees of the everfree below.

I felt myself land on something soft, and fuzzy. “Are you crazy!” I heard a mare say. “Why didn’t you flap your wings!” I opened my eyes to see that a mare bigger than me, with a brown mane that fades to green at the end.

She flew me to the ground below and dropped me hard. “Sorry, I didn’t think somepony would save me, I wanted to die.” When I looked at the mare she had fangs, her eyes were green.

“Why’d ya want to die?” She asked.

“I’m a waste, I should have died in that tornado.”

“A tornado, heh, wow.” She looked me up and down and then started to drag me deeper into the forest. “Come with me.”

She took me with her, when I asked what she was doing she said she was adopting me as her younger brother, to be honest, I was terrified of her. I met her mother who didn't like me, but Color managed to convince her to let me stay, and just like that, I had a new family. Color was a nice sister, she cared for me, she kinda raised me for a few years until I was around eighteen, she then took me back to Cloudsdale.

“Thanks sis, you really saved me back then.”

“No problem bro bro.” She smiled at me her big toothy grin and then took off back to the forest. I decided then and there I would live life to the fullest.

“Wow, that’s such a sad story.” Vinyl said with tears in her eyes, I saw that all of them where crying.

“We are glad that you did not die, you make our lives so much better.” Octavia said.

“Who would have told me humans are real?” Lyra said.

“Who would have loved my candy no matter what?” Bon Bon added.

I looked at my friends there and smiled at them, I was crying. They all quickly huddled around me with a hug, “Thank you, it feels so nice to get this off my chest.”

“Anything for you Lightning, because we care for you.” Vinyl had called me by my actual name something she didn’t even do when we first met.

“Thank you, all of you.” I took a deep breath and then calmly asked. “Would anypony like some tea?” I spent the rest of the afternoon with them, and when it came time for them to leave I was glad to know I had such good friends.

I locked my front door and went to my room where I got ready to sleep and soon enough I felt something warm against my back. It was bigger than me, and soft. “Heh, Thanks sis.” I said softly.”

“Anything for you bro bro.” I knew she smiled and the next day I awoke by myself. I sneezed loudly and wiped my nose on my foreleg and shivered. “Heh, I need to tell her to close the window when she leaves.”

I went to my bedroom window looking out it I could see the horizon, where the sun was rising, that’s where my friends stay. I closed it and shut the curtains walking to my livingroom I said to myself. “All this because I made one good friend who decided to be my sister.” I left my house walking towards Ponyville, allowing myself time to think about what I would do next.
