Red String of Fate

"Come on, Sunset!" she called out to me as I lagged behind in preparations.

"Hold on, Twi. I'm getting ready. It's not like the diner is going to up and run away," I said, joking around as I put my leather jacket on.

" I have to get back to Equestria tomorrow,” she replied. “I'd like to hang out with my friends at least a little while longer before I have to head back."

"Yeah. Friends..." I murmured, rolling my eyes to the side to conceal the sting. I exited the bathroom and glanced up to see Twilight more dressed up than usual; in one of the dresses Rarity gave to her, her hair up in this cute little bun, and her make-up done. I couldn't stop the warmth in my face as I practically stared at her, nor did I notice how my mouth was agape in awe. Apparently my blush was extremely apparent.

"Um, Sunny?” Twilight asked. “Are you feeling alright?"

Hearing her voice brought me out of my trance. I blinked, looked up to her and nodded, trying to calm myself down a bit. "O-Of course Twi!” I said, smiling cheerfully. “Why wouldn't I be?"

She walked up to me and placed her hands on my forehead to feel my temperature. To be honest, it took everything in me to stop myself from grabbing her hands and pull her in for a kiss; yet somehow, with sheer willpower, I restrained myself. Unfortunately, I knew my lips were quivering- begging to be pressed up against hers.

"You feel kind of warm,” she notified me. “Are you sure you're ok?"

I nodded and smiled. "C-Come on! Let's get going. I'm sure that the other girls are waiting for us." I blurted, trying to quickly get my mind onto something different. She nods and reaches out, grabbing my hand, pulling me out of the house and on toward the Diner.

When we arrived, everyone was already seated and immediately began looking at us with aggravation. "About time you two get here!" Dash called out to us as we took our seats.

"Sorry, it took me a minute longer to get ready." I said with a slight smile.

"You could have already ordered." Twilight said shyly.

"Well, we didn't wanna go ‘head n’ start eatin’ without the two lovebirds." AJ teased, then she got up to head to the bathroom.

Both Twilight and myself were blushing visibly. "W-What are you talking about? We're not dating or anything." I said, blushing deeper.

"Oh, please,” Dash said, looking at the both of us. “You two are always side by side and whenever you're gone. Sunset acts like a lost puppy."

It felt as if my face were on fire, I was blushing so hard. "Dash, what about that thing with you and AJ?" I said, Dash's face instantly matching mine. Thankfully AJ wasn't there when I said that, but I believe I got my point across.

Twilight looked at me, slightly confused and crossing her arms. "Wait, what's going on here?" She asked.

"C-Could we discuss this another time, Twi?” I said, doing my best to make up an excuse. “I mean, everyone is hungry. It's probably just the hunger that's getting to us."

She shot me a suspicious look, though froze up to suddenly hear her own stomach growling. She laughed softly and said, "I guess that's it."

I gave a sigh of relief, unaware that Dash was still glaring at me. 'I'm sorry!' I mouthed to her, hoping that she understood why I kicked her in the shin. She sighed and shrugged slightly with AJ showing up and sitting back down beside of Dash. We finally ordered our food and got the chance to eat with that slight awkward moment behind us… or so I thought.

As I finished up and put my plate to the side, Twilight glanced over at me and grabbed my hand and pulled me outside. "W-Wait, where are we going?!" I exclaim.

We stopped in the alleyway beside of the Diner with her eyeing me down. "So, what was Dash talking about inside?" She asked me, her cheeks were growing slightly flushed.

"What, I can't miss my friend while you’re away?" I throw out, trying to make up something convincing.

I had a feeling she knew I was lying, but she still shrugged. "Oh. You uh, still don't mind if I stay with you tonight, right Sunny?”

I nodded and smiled. "Of course I don't mind! Why would I?"

She stared back at me and smirked slightly. "Well…” she edged on, “you were kind of nuzzling into me last night in your sleep."

...Shit. Was I really? Damn it, I hate being such a dead sleeper. Meanwhile, Twilight continues looking at me, waiting for a response. "I-I really liked the smell of your perfume." I stammered, blushing fiercely.

The princess nodded. "Ok, then. But uh, I may sleep on the couch tonight. I have to get everything ready for tomorrow, and I don't want to keep you up." she said. I think my heart sank when she said that. Did I manage to make our friendship so awkward that she is now trying to push me away? "Is that alright?" Twilight confirmed.

"…I understand." I say, slightly heartbroken; though I did my best to mask my feelings.

Shortly after, everyone else came around the corner and looked at us with suspicious eyes. Rarity asked "Is everything alright, darling?"

Twilight turned, nodded with a gentle smile, and began walking ahead of me. "Of course. So what do you girls want to do for tonight?"

“Actually,” Rarity spoke up, “I really should go home and finish working on a dress for class tomorrow."

"N’ me n’ Dash are headin' out t’ the soccer field. She said she'd beat me in a match of one on one." AJ said with Dash smirking slyly beside of her.

Twilight glanced over at Pinkie. "Sorry, Twi. I totally would be down to chill, but I have twin duty tonight." She cried.

"What about you, Fluttershy?" Twilight asked with a tone that screamed disappointment.

"Um, well,” the cream-colored pegasus said in her usual shy tone, “I have to get home and take care of the animals. I’m sure they’re probably really antsy without their food. …Umm, I mean! I-If that's alright with you guys, that is..."

Twilight looked off and sighed. Then she turned to me and smiled. "I guess that leaves just us, Sunny." I returned the smile, but I kind of felt like she was hoping the others would tag along to make sure we weren't alone. We waved our friends off with the both of us walking side by side, and I walked home with the princess in tow.

Usually, we are talking and laughing, but this trip home just held silence. "So, what do you want to do when we get home?" I asked her, trying to break the silence.

Twilight hesitated. "…Actually,” she finally quivered, her tone littered with specks of disappointment; “I may just head on back to Equestria tonight..."

I look over at her, my jaw slightly agape. "Wait… what? Really? You're not going to stay another night here?" I ask her. “But…”

She shook her head. "No, all the girls back home are probably getting worried about me. Besides, this is the longest I've been gone from Equestria." She said as she continued to look forward in an attempt to avoid my shock-stricken stare.

"Oh..." I murmured, not even trying to hide the pain. When she finally looked over at me, I looked down at the ground.

When we finally got home, Twilight took a few minutes to gather her belongings. "Well,” she said as she looked in my general direction, “I guess I'll see you later."

I nodded slowly as I opened the door for her. "Sorry that I’ve made things too awkward for you to stay another night." I said jokingly, trying to cheer myself up.

Twilight nudged my shoulder. "Hey… It's not like I'm going to be gone forever.” She said before locking me in a tender embrace. “I'll be back."

Returning the embrace, tears start to fill my eyes. She eventually tore away and stepped out the door, followed soundly by my action of closing it behind her. The second I heard the latches, I couldn't help myself but to break down. ‘Why would she ever love me?’ I said to myself, curling into a ball in front of the door. "I'm just getting my hopes up for nothing." I cried out, sobbing loudly.

---------

I froze, hearing Sunset's sobbing in front of the door, but despite of everything, I continued on towards the portal.

"Why is she crying?" I ask myself, looking down at the ground before me. "M-Maybe I should go back and check on her?" I ask, before turning to look at Sunset's home.

"Or is there something that I'm missing?" I said, looking down, feeling my heart slightly sinking. I sigh and continue to walk towards the portal, just wanting to go home and lay down. 'I'm going to miss snuggling up to her.' I thought to myself.

I arrived at the portal to only realise that I can't get through it for some reason. "Oh no, what's going?" I ask myself, trying to find an entrance. Finally I pushed on the statue that held the portal once more, with it giving way with me falling through.

I arrive back to Equestria to see that my invention to maintain the portal was being tampered with by Spike. "SPIKE! What are you doing?" I snapped at him, with Spike almost leaping out of his skin. "Your book was going off. I didn't know if it was you needing help." He said, his tone slightly concerned.

The book went off once more with me grabbing it and looked at it to see that Sunset was writing in it, but would erase it shortly after. I shook my head and started down the hallway, carrying the book to my room and made myself comfortable as I began to write back.

"Sunset, is there something you wish to tell me?" I write down. A few minutes passed with no reply from her. I groaned out and put it beside my bed and laid down. "So what made you come home tonight? I thought you weren't going to be home for another day?" Spike asked as he walked up to me.

I looked over at him and sighed slightly. "I felt as if I was over staying my welcome. I didn't want to end up bothering them anymore than I have." I said in a cold tone, rolling over to face away from Spike.

"What about Sunset, the girl you fell so madly in love for?" I shot up from my bed, blushing deeply, my wings fully spread. "H-How did you know?" I ask him, slightly surprised. "Well, I was putting away some of your books and your diary fell from the stack and it opened up to a page that you were wanting to do someth-"

"Ok, I get the point! So you found out about that." I said, my blush getting worse by the second. "Well, did you actually tell her?" "No, Spike. Beside's she doesn't feel the same way..." I said, looking down at the ground.

"Well, how do you know if you never ask?" He said. "I don't want to risk our friendship, just because of my feelings." I stated, trying to lay back down, fighting with my wings to flatten back out.

Spike grew silent, though I eventually heard him sigh as he went to lay down in his bed. A few hours passed with Spike dead asleep, though I couldn't get myself to calm down. I want to tell her, I really do, but what IF that ends up destroying our friendship.

Another hour passed as I looked up at the ceiling and sighed, getting up from my bed and walked over to my invention, placing the book back in it.

I stood in front of the portal for a few minutes, contemplating everything. What should I say if I go. How should I tell her. My mind was running faster than ever. I jumped slightly to hear the book go off and brought it back down quickly. "Please come back." I read out before she had the chance to erase it.

I placed the book back and sighed, darting through the portal. By now it was night time, I just hope that she was still awake.

I arrive at her house to see her bed room light still on. I reach up and knocked on the door a couple of times, panting heavily since I just ran all the way here. "P-Please still be up." I said, my voice somewhat shaky.

I knock once more, a little bit louder to try and get her attention. "I'm on my way!" I hear her call out in an exhausted tone. A minute passed with her finally coming to the door, rubbing her eyes that were bloodshot and her cheeks were stained with tears.

She looked at me in surprise, a faint smile slowly forming along her lips. "Is everything ok?" I asked her. She nodded and sighed softly. "Twilight, I need to talk to you." She said, my heart now racing.

She reached out and grabbed my hands, pulling me inside and shut the door behind me. "W-what is it?" I ask. She went silent as if she was collecting her thoughts.

"Sunset, is everything alri- HMPF!" I was silenced as she pulled me close to her, her lips embracing my own. I was shocked at first, but enjoyed every second of it.

It felt like my heart was ready to beat out of my chest, before she broke the kiss. "Twilight, I need to be honest with you. I wasn't really expecting you to come back here tonight, but I need to get this off of my chest." She said, grabbing my hands, curling her fingers with my own.

"I know, I was an complete bitch in the past and I know that you will probably never forgive me for my actions, but what I want to say is that I..." She paused to collect her thoughts. "I've never felt this way for anyone. Not even Flash when I was with him, but I..." She froze up again and looked down bashfully.

I looked and laughed softly. "Are you trying to say that you love me?" I say. Her face turned a whole new shade of red as she nodded.

I looked at her, slightly surprised and somewhat speechless. She looked up at me, begging for a reply. "I don't want to end up destroying our friendship and I'm sorry if I may have just now by doing that." She said in a emotionless tone, releasing my hands.

Before our hands could break apart, I reached for hers, holding them close to me "You haven't Sunny. Honestly, I've felt the same way, but was worried about the same exact thing. I love having you curled up to me, I love having you with me, I love being able to cuddle into you, I love feeling like I'm important to someone! I understand I'm important but I still feel lonely and the only time I feel like I am complete is when I'm with you!" I blurted out.

"W-what I'm trying to say is, I love you too." I said, blushing even more. "And the reason I left earlier was because I was scared that you were getting annoyed at the fact that I was staying here too long." I said bashfully.

She looked up at me and smirked. "I could never be annoyed by you." She said, kissing me once more. My face lit up once more, melting into the kiss. After we broke this kiss, she wrapped her arms around me as I rested my head on her shoulder, my emotions in a whole new form of bliss.

"Do you mind if I stay with you tonight?" I asked her, a dumbfounded smile still on my face. She looked at me with her sly smirk. "I thought you'd never ask." She said before she kissed the top of my head.

"Come on, let's go on to bed." I said, pulling away from the embrace and grabbed her hands, the both of us heading to her bedroom. She laid down, with me laying down beside of her, resting my head on her chest. Her heartbeat slowly lulling me to sleep. She reached down to grab the blankets and pulled it over us and then wrapped her arm around me to pull me close to her. I look up at her and smile once more, kissing her once more before finally going to sleep.
