The Tale of Coltypt

The Burning Bush

Some years have passed since Amun ran away from Coltypt and reached Berberia. During that time, Amun’s life changed radically, and his way of thinking too.

He began to help the ponies of Berberia in everything he could, as raising new tents. Although Amun was a Unicorn and had magic, something that could be very useful to the other ponies, he'd rather not use it, because he wanted to know how it was like to be a common pony, something that was really satisfied.

Amun also began to value things that, as a prince, he had never valued, like water, as it was valuable for those who lived in the desert. Furthermore, he learned that a shepherd could have a more important role than any king, since the sheep depended on who is guiding and taking care of them. They were essential for the ponies of Berberia, since they gave them the wool they could use to create clothes for the cold nights in the desert and even gave them some milk to drink.

The young unicorn, in order to help those who helped him, became pastor, helping Hathor taking care of the sheep, getting a staff for that. At first, Amun had some difficulty in his new job, but soon he managed to get the sheeps’ trust, since he protected them from danger, fed them and helped in births.

But what really satisfied Amun was the friendships that he had created. In addition to Keb and his family, he also made friends with other inhabitants, mainly a griffon, who, like him, was hosted by Keb’s tribe after crossing the desert. His name was Montu and was a griffin with a brownish head and wing feathers, yellow-brown fur, yellowish claws and dark grayish mulberry eyes. But his relationship with Hathor was the one which flourished more.

Despite the friction that they had in Coltypt, the two eventually got into an understanding and have become great friends. However, this friendship became quite strong and was taken to another level. The two eventually fall in love and eventually ended up getting married. It was at this time that Amun finally saw how his life had changed for the better.

Getting away from Coltypt was the best decision he had taken, because he felt that the emptiness he felt since he found out the truth about his origins was gradually being filled. Little he knew that all this was about to change.

One morning, Amun awoke to go herding the sheeps. After getting prepared, he looked to Hathor, who was sleeping peacefully. He passed his hoof by her face and then gave her a kiss, saying then:

"I love you."

Picking up on his staff, Amun opened his tent and contemplated the beautiful sight of the rising sun, while its rays painted everything with gold. He breathed deeply, feeling the sweet aroma of fresh air and advanced. He led the sheep to the pasture and watched them while they fed themselves. It was then he noticed that one of them had strayed, starting to climb a rocky mount that was there. Sighing, Amun followed it. That sheep was always causing trouble, as it always tried to stray from the herd. He followed it until he saw it entering in a cave.

“It’s too early for this” Amun grumbled.

He entered in the cave, using his staff to get balance. When he prepared to follow the way the sheep took, he noticed something. It was like a blue light. It was warm and attractive. Although Amun knew he had to get the sheep, he couldn’t resist and so he followed the light. He followed a path that led down in the cave.

When he got there, he saw from where the light was coming from and he got astonished. It was coming from a bush which was burning with a blue fire. However, what was amazing was that the bush wasn’t being consumed by the fire. Curious, Amun extended his staff and let the top touch the fire. He saw the fire burning the staff and, when he retreated the top, Amun saw that it was not burned.

With his curiosity growing even more, Amun dared to extend his own hoof and he touched the fire. He could feel the heat of the fire, but he couldn’t feel his hoof burning. Amun retreated the hoof, looking it amazed. How could that possibly be happening. It was then that he heard a voice saying:

“Amun…”

The young unicorn looked around, but he didn’t saw anypony. But the voice continued saying:

“Amun… Amun…. Amun…”

Keeping an alert state and his staff ready for any possible attack, Amun answered:

“Here I am.”

“Make a bow before the fire, Amun, because the fire that you’re seeing is sacred” the voice said.

It was then that Amun realized the voice was coming from the burning bush. He asked:

“Who are you?”

“I am that I am” the voice answered.

“I don’t understand” Amun said, confused.

“I’m the lord of everything that exist in all Creation” the voice answered. “The one that keeps everything in balance, in order. The one that your father, Nefertem, and your mother, Seshat, served.”

Hearing that, Amun became paralyzed. He was talking with the Lord of Order, the one that created everything and that his parents, his true parents, served and honored. Acting in an impulse, Amun kneel on his kness and made a bow, dropping his staff. Then, he raised up and asked:

“What do you want from me?”

“I have seen the oppression of the ponies who are loyal to me in Coltypt and I have heard their cry” the Lord of Order said. “Their suffering.”

And then the cries of the slaves in Coltypt started echoed in Amun’s head, as he remembered that.

“And so I decided that is time to deliver them out of slavery and return their land, the kingdom I created, to its former glory. My brother has his control of Coltypt for too long. And so, unto Pharaoh, I shall send… you.”

When the Lord of Order said that, Amun became shocked and asked:

“Me? But… Who am I to lead these ponies? They’ll never believe me. They won’t even listen.”

“You are the rightful Pharaoh of Coltypt” the Lord of Order said. “They know that and they will listen you. But don’t worry. I shall teach you what to say.”

And Amun heard his own voice saying in his head: Set my people free!

“But I was their enemy. I maybe be the son of the pharaoh they loved, but I was raised by the stallion who slaughtered their children because of me. You’ve… You’ve chosen the wrong messenger. How can I even speak to these people?”

Suddenly, the fire was intensified as well as the light that obfuscated Amun who protected his eyes and the Lord of Order spoke, with his words rumbling like thunders, that made Amun take cover on the ground:

WHO MADE THE PONY’S MOUTH?! WHO MADE THE DEAF, THE MUTE, THE SEEING OR THE BLIND? DID NOT I?! NOW GO!

And the fire normalized, but Amun was still on the ground, still afraid of the mighty voice he just heard. Then the blue fire started to wrap him up like arms and raised him delicately, while the Lord of Order said in a tender voice:

“Oh, Amun, I shall be with you when you go to the King of Coltypt. But Pharaoh will not listen. His heart will continue to be hardened and will not give up his power over Coltypt. He is too attached to it and so he ignores his own nature. So I will stretch out my hand and smite Coltypt with all my wonders.”

And the fire raised and marveled Amun with its beauty.

“They will see who really rules the land” the Lord of Order continued to say. “They will see that what I gave, I can take back. Pharaoh will feel the suffering of his people and will be obliged to give up the throne. Now, Amun, take the staff in your hoof. With it, you shall do my wonders.”
And the fire put Amun down and started to retreat, while the Lord of Order said:

“I shall be with you, Amun.”

And the fire disappeared. Amun was still astonish by what he just experimented. He couldn’t believe that the Lord of Order had just spoken to him. He then looked to his staff. That staff was imbued with the power of the Lord of Order and he had to use it to take Coltypt back. That was his mission, his right, his obligation as the true ruler of Coltypt. He took the staff and, with its help, Amun raised up. He looked to the bush that stopped burning. It was untouched, as it had never been on fire.

After finding the sheep that strayed from the flock, Amun got out of the cave. His meeting with the Lord of Order was still keeping his mind occupied. Then excited took over him and, without thinking, he returned to his tend, finding Hathor already awake, and, full of joy, he started to tell her all about his meeting with the Lord of Order. After he had told, Hathor, a little perturbed by what her husband told her, sat down and then said:

“But, Amun, you are just one pony.”

Amun, understanding his wife’s worries, sat beside her, put is hoof on her face and said:

“Hathor, please.”

Trying to find a way to explain the situation to her, Amun saw her family outside, happy, and then said:

“Look at your family. They are free. They have a future. They have hopes and dreams… and the promise of a life with dignity. That is what I want to my people. And that is why I must do the task that the Lord of Order has given me. Not only because of them or because it’s the right thing to do, but also because it’s my duty as the son of Nefertem.”

She then looked at him and smiled and then hugged him, saying then:

“I’m coming with you.”

So, they began preparing to return to Coltypt. Preparing a camel with supplies, Amun and Hathor were surprised when Montu said he was going with them.

"Monthu, you don't have to come with us" Amun said, while Monthu was checking if he had everything in his saddlebags.

"Don't talk nonsense, my friend" he said. "After all we've been through, do you really think I'm going to let you face Pharaoh alone?"

"I'm going too, remember?" Hathor said.

"Yes, I know, but a little extra help never hurt anypony" Monthu said.

Amun and Hathor exchanged a look and then they smiled and the former told to the griffon:

"It will be an honor to have your company."

"Perfect" he said. "Then let's go."

And then, after saying goodbye to Keb and all the others in the camp, Amun, Hathor and Monthu started to go to Coltypt, with the two ponies on the camel and the griffon flying by their side.

The Lord of Order was seeing everything through his mirror, sitting on his throne.

"The plan is already in motion" he said. "I'm glad that I resorted to that burning bush to communicate with Amun, or I could draw my brother’s attention. Now, it won't be long until I have Coltypt back under my control and influence."
