Following The Shadow

When Amethyst got home she went to her room right away. She wrote down everything that she remembered about what happened in her dream last night. She remembered it feeling so real. Yet she knew it wasn’t. She must have been up there for hours because her mother called up to her

“Dinner time Amey!”

Dinner? Already? Amethyst thought.

She went down stairs to find that her bother wasn’t home yet.

“Mummie? Where is Everest?” she asked her mother

“He’s probably caught up with royal guard duties. He’ll be home later tonight.” Her mother said.

Amethyst’s mother was kind, sweet and caring. She had a green coat with a long light yellow mane. She also had light brown eyes. She worked as a gem collector. It was her favourite thing to do. Though she had not acquired her cutie mark from being one. In fact, she didn’t have a cutie mark at all. But Amethyst didn’t care. She loved her mother a lot.

After dinner Amethyst went back up to her room. She looked at picture of her mother. She saw that she wasn’t a Crystal Pony like her and her brother. She and her brother both had grey coats. Even though hers was darker. He a had dark yellow man and she had light blue. Like an ice blue. He had dark brown eyes and she had light blue. Her family looked like they were mixed matched but this was Amethyst’s family. And she loved them. She wouldn’t trade them for the world.

That night she had another dream. She was out in the cold again. But this time it wasn’t snowing and she was alone. She yelled out

“Everest? Mummie?”

But no pony relied. She started walking. She thought that if she walked to the Empire that she would be safe. While she was walking she looked up at the stars again. Still no constellations. She kept on walking for what felt like hours. Her hooves felt frozen. She knew they weren’t because it was a dream.

“If this is a dream, then why does it feel so real?” she asked herself.

She kept on walking. Still signs of life anywhere. Maybe I’m walking the wrong way? She thought to herself.
She didn’t want to turn around because she could have been close. Everywhere she looked there was miles and miles of flat ground covered in snow. There was no way to tell which direction she was heading. She finally fell to the ground exhausted of walking. She gave up. There was no she could get anywhere.

Suddenly a flash of light appeared in the distance. When the light had died down she looked over and saw that it was the Empire in the distance.
She got up and bolted towards it. She had to get there. She knew it was safe there. But when she was running it wasn’t getting any closer. She ran faster, she tried harder to get there. It was like she was running it the same place. She was so tired of running; she wanted to fall to the ground and rest. Her hooves felt even colder then what they were before. But she didn’t stop. She tried harder and harder. She felt her eyes slowing closing. She fell to the cold ground.

She opened her eyes and she was home. She looked around and she was in her bed safe and warm. She let out a sigh of relief. Amethyst was too scared to go back to sleep. So she went to get another piece of paper to write everything down that she had just dreamt. When she finished, at the corner of her eye, she saw another shadow like thing slip under her door and into the hallway on the other side.

Amethyst decided this time she was going to follow it. So she got out of bed and opened her door. She saw the shadow go down the stairs so she followed it. When she got down she didn’t see it anymore. She looked around and finally saw it go under the front door. Amethyst didn’t want to go outside into the cold night, but she wanted to follow the shadow so badly. So she put on her scarf and headed outside. She saw it move quickly towards the Library. Amethyst followed after it swiftly. Trying not to wake up any of her neighbors, she hurried off to the Library, where she once again saw the shadow go inside under the door. She pulled on the door but it was locked.

Of course! Amethyst thought to herself and went around the building to see if there was an open window she could go through.
Luckily at the very back she found a window she could get to. Sadly, it was too high up for Amethyst to crawl through. She looked around to see if there was a tree or something she could climb onto to get up. She saw an old crate.

This doesn’t look very safe to climb on. But it will have to do!

So she pushed it over to the window and climbed on top of it. The crate was old and worn. The planks were very unsturdy. She managed to push herself from the crate to the window and crawled through.

When she got in it was dark. The only light was the moon shining through the windows. It was too dark to see the shadow anywhere but not dark enough that she couldn’t see where she was going. So she went over to a torch on the wall and lit it on fire with some matches that were left there.
“Now, to find that shadow!” Amethyst said before grabbing the torch with her mouth. She looked around for the shadow. Down every hall and staircase. But she couldn’t find it until it appeared right in front of her. It started leading her to a very dark corner. She followed unknowing where it was taking her. Then her torch went out. Then a deep voice spoke to her.

“Amethyst”

“What? How do you know my name?” she asked frightened.

It was complete darkness. She didn’t which way was an exit.

“You are going to have bad things happen to you. And you will be…” The shadowy voice drifted off

“Be what?” she asked. But there was no reply

“BE WHAT?!” she yelled this time trying to get the voice to come back.

“Be what?” she said more softly this time. It was almost a whisper. She had a feeling the shadow had left. She knew she had to go too. But the question never fled from her mind.

Be what? What will I be?
