Kite

by Quadraginta

Everywhere around her, in the park where she stood, Fluttershy could see fillies and mares and colts flying kites. Parents with their beloved children, fillies with their beloved parents, and kites, colourful, catching the breeze with relative ease.

Fluttershy had made plans to fly a kite with Rainbow Dash today, but she had not yet shown up. But she wasn't worried. Rainbow Dash always showed up. Always. She even promised her she would.

Fluttershy stepped over to a nice, spacious spot in the park, and waited. Waited, and watched. Watched the kites, watched all the happy ponies running around and having fun. It made her feel happy on the inside, knowing that Equestria was safe, safe and peaceful.

Before she knew it, an hour passed. Fluttershy wasn't worried, though. Rainbow Dash was probably just taking a nap somewhere. Probably overslept. Didn't set her alarm clock or something.

Fluttershy chuckled at the idea of Rainbow Dash having an alarm clock. Dashie? The pony who loved to nap? Use an alarm clock? Preposterous. Besides, she probably needed all the beauty sleep she could get.

Another hour passed. Fluttershy still didn't worry, though. She managed to keep herself entertained by watching the butterflies flutter by, and by watching the animals frolic. Life was good. She could wait all day for Rainbow Dash if she had to. Besides, Dashie would never abandon her. No. Fashionably late was her thing, anyways.

Yet another hour passed. At this moment, Fluttershy began to fidget, but only slightly. The sky was beginning to glow orange. Where did the time go? thought Fluttershy. 3 hours had passed already, and yet Rainbow Dash was nowhere to be seen. Still, Fluttershy had faith in her friend. Some of the other ponies were beginning to leave, though.

Another hour. The sky was getting darker, and some of the stars were even beginning to become visible. Fluttershy sighed. She was beginning to grow more worried now, but she still held onto her faith in Rainbow Dash. She wouldn't abandon her, even if she was late.

The last hour passed. It was now nighttime. Everypony had left, and Fluttershy was the only one still in the park. She sighed, tears beginning to well up in her eyes. Rainbow Dash hadn't shown up.

She had broken her promise.

Fluttershy looked down at her kite. It was a butterfly flying over a rainbow, with a heart cut into the middle. It symbolized Fluttershy and Rainbow Dash's relationship together, but it meant nothing now.

She sighed, again, and halfheartedly lifted the handle of the kite. The wind was still blowing, as it had been all day, and it didn't seem like it was going to end.

She watched sadly as the kite blew in the wind. Tears now began to slide down her cheek. She was about to lower the handle of the kite and bring it down, until she felt strong, reassuring hooves grab her arms up from under her elbows and pushed them skyward.

"Huh?" she mumbled in surprise as she looked behind herself to see the owner of the hooves.

It was Rainbow Dash.
