Ageless, Not Immortal

Ageless, Not Immortal

Twilight levitated a book from one of her ginormous bookshelves, and settled by her warm fireplace. The fire warmed Twilight's body. It was the middle of the winter, so Twilight couldn't go outside in the big heaps of snow that the blizzard left. The wind was howling outside, and mostly everypony was inside their houses. Twilight got comfy, and began to read her thick book.

"Twilight!"

Twilight yelped, startled. She stood up straight, glancing at where the sound came from. She could see all her friends, huddled inside the castle. There was a big hole where the two castle doors should be.

"You broke the doors?!" Twilight exclaimed. She ran in the direction of her friends, but approached the door instead. "My precious doors! I just had them repainted yesterday!" Tears formed in Twilight's eyes as she petted her doors that were thrown on the floor.

Twilight's friends were cold, shivering from the cold outside. "Um, Twilight? Did you forget your own friends?" Rainbow Dash said.

"Yeah, yeah, you all are important too," Twilight said, but her focus was really on her doors. "Why did you all even come in the middle of a blizzard?"

"To say good bye to you," Pinkie answered. "We're all going top miss you so much, Twilight!" She hugged her hooves to her body for warmth, still shivering from the cold air and snow from the blizzard.

"Why? It's not like I'm going anywhere," Twilight said, confused.

"But we're all going to die without you," Pinkie cried.

"I can't bear dying without all of my best friends beside my grave!" Fluttershy cried.

"Yeah, it's going to so uncool if you had to live all by yourself all alone for the rest of eternity," Rainbow Dash said.

"Um, girls-," Twilight began, but she got cut off by Applejack.

"You're sure gonna miss us, surgarcube," Applejack said.

"We're so sorry that we won't be able to be here for all your birthdays," Rarity began. "You'll be spending all your birthdays all alone by yourself. Don't forget that we'll always be there for you. Well, not physically, but you get the idea."

"WAIT!" Twilight yelled, getting everypony's attention in the room. "Why exactly would you all die without me?"

"Because you're an alicorn," Pinkie replied. "Alicorns are immortal. Which means that when we all grow super old and die, you're going to live all by yourself until the end of time."

"First of all," Twilight began. "If I was immortal, I wouldn't be spending my birthdays alone. Cadence, Celestia, and Luna would be there, because they're immortal too. And second of all, I'm not immortal."

"You're not?" Pinkie questioned. "But I thought all alicorns were immortal, right?"

"Well, every other alicorn is immortal except for me," Twilight began. "Celestia only made me ageless, because I'm the princess of friendship, and the princess of friendship has to have her friends."

"Aren't ageless and immortal the same thing?" Pinkie asked.

"No, ageless is when you don't age, but there is still a chance of you dying. Immortal is when you also don't age, but you don't die," Twilight explained.

"So you're not gonna outlive us?" Pinkie asked.

"Nope," Twilight answered. "Besides, if I don't die in a freak accident, Celestia will have some plan of what to do. I asked her this myself, and she told me that I'm not immortal. She said she'll make arrangements."

"If you're suppose to be the princess of friendship and you can't even be the princess of friendship without your friends, then why bother being an alicorn anyway? I don't understand why Celestia had to make adjustments for you not to be immortal. Can't she do some kind of system for for this princess of friendship thing?" Rainbow Dash wondered aloud.

"Actually, Rainbow Dash, I think you're right. You made me realize that I don't even need to be an alicorn to be the princess of friendship! I can still be a unicorn, and not outlive my friends. But if Celestia really wanted to add a fourth princess permanently, she could at least let me pick somepony worthy to become the next princess of friendship instead of just making me an alicorn. I think that would make more sense," Twilight said.

"Yeah, but what if Celestia just made you an alicorn temporarily? After your time of ruling, you could just become a unicorn again. Then the next chosen future princess would become an alicorn," Pinkie said.

"Good point, Pinkie, but if this were all up to me, I'd rather choose to be a unicorn instead. I don't know if it's just me, but I'd just simply like the way things should be. It's like everypony is bowing to me every minute, and it just kind of feels wrong. Wouldn't it be awkward to see an everyday unicorn suddenly have wings and become an alicorn?" Twilight said.

"Yeah, but wouldn't it be the same way if you were still a unicorn? You're still a princess, so everypony would give you the same respect that any princess would receive, alicorn or not. So it wouldn't really matter," Pinkie pointed out.

"Actually, it would," Twilight began. "There are important leaders that aren't alicorns. Take Mayor Mare for an example. She is the mayor of Ponyville, and sh's an earth pony. Other ponies don't treat her awkwardly as they would to an alicorn. They look at her like she's one of them. This would also work better for me, too. I need everypony to see me as one of their own, to trust me, so I can help them with their problems. But being an alicorn and all, they probably wouldn't take me as their same level."

"Hmm... Good point," Pinkie said. "So you're not immortal, but you're still ageless. But Celestia also assured that you'll never outlive us. I think this calls for a party!"
