//------------------------------// // A Normal Day? // Story: Flightless // by Pinkish Posh //------------------------------// "Oh, I can't wait until after school!" Scootaloo exclaimed to her friends on the way to school. She was jumping along the path as if she were Pinkie Pie. She was going to spend her time after school with Rainbow Dash, her idol. "Wow, ah guess you sound really excited." Apple Bloom replied. "Yeah, sounds pretty sweet! Although, since you won't be here, we can't go crusading today; but that's just fine, it's only for today." Sweetie Belle tried to sound positive without making Scootaloo feel bad. Just then, the school bell rang. “Come on girls, we’re going to be late if we don’t hurry up!” Apple Bloom shouted as she raced ahead of her friends. "Wait up!" Sweetie Belle and Scootaloo shouted in unison as they both dashed forward. After school, Scootaloo waved goodbye to her friends and rode her scooter down the path to Cloudsdale. "I'm so excited I could explode!" Scootaloo found Rainbow Dash sleeping on a cloud before she even reached Cloudsdale. “Hey Rainbow Dash!” Rainbow woke up to a familiar voice. “Ugh, what now?” Rainbow yawned groggily until she looked down and instantly perked up to the sight of Scootaloo. “Hey squirt, didn’t see ya there!” "What're you doing sleeping up there?" asked Scootaloo, "I thought you'd be at Cloudsdale. Lucky I looked up, or I would've missed you." Scootaloo really just heard Rainbow snoring and looked up, but she didn't want to embarrass her idol. "Oh, you know, taking a well-deserved nap after kicking some clouds Twilight asked me to do." Rainbow yawned again. "So, uh, you ready to fly?" "Absolutely!" "Alright, I'll be down there in a second." Rainbow yawned long and loudly. Scootaloo realized that Rainbow was too tired to do almost nothing. Then, an idea popped into her head. "You look really tired. I'll be back really quickly!" She took off in her scooter and headed towards Sweet Apple Acres. "Wow, she's half as fast as me! Soon she'll be able to fly." Two minutes later Scootaloo returned from Sweet Apple Acres with a mug in her hoof. "You know, You're pretty fast in that scooter of yours." "What? really?" Rainbow Dash's remark surprised her. "Yeah, sure, have you ever noticed?" "No, I never payed attention." "Say, what're you holding?" "Oh, this? It's a mug of cider. Figured it'll help you wake up." Scootaloo handed the mug over to Rainbow. "Thanks squirt. How'd ya know I like cider so much?" Rainbow Dash took a sip of the cider and felt an enormous amount of energy running through her body. "Eh, it's quite obvious." "So, now that I have enough energy, you ready to start?" "Yeah, let's go!" Scootaloo was flapping her wings so it looked like she was flying, although she was being held by Rainbow Dash who was doing the real flying. It was almost exactly like that race during that camping trip, although this time they weren't racing against anypony. "Now, what you wanna do is bring your wings to the top and bring them down with enough force that it brings your body upward and forward. You don't want to use a lot of force when bringing it upward so that it pushes you downward and backward." "Got it. then how do I go different directions or turn?" "Eh, that stuff is a bit too advanced, let's just learn the basics for now." Later that day, when Scootaloo finished her training for the day, she waved goodbye to her hero figure and went straight home. She was tired and decided to get some shuteye. "Today was okay, but I still can't fly on my own." Scootaloo thought to herself. "Maybe I won't ever fly." She look at the notes she took on tips on flying and how to do it correctly. She flapped her wings and tried using those steps, but to no avail, she didn't leave the ground. "I'll just be... flightless." She said the last word out loud. She sighed and tucked her covers over and fell fast asleep. Little did she know, that Rainbow was also doubting herself and had thoughts of her own. Rainbow was pacing back and forth in her bedroom, thinking to herself. "She really can't fly. I started to fly when I was half her age! Maybe she's just a late flier. It doesn't really matter how long it takes for somepony to fly right? Aw, what am I saying, she'll fly one day, no problem. She got me by her side, and I won't let her down!" Rainbow tried to be as positive as she could be, trying not to give up hope that she'll be able to help Scoots fly one day. She knew it would take a lot of effort, but seeing her "sister" finally fly would melt her heart. "Yes, it'll be worth it." Scootaloo had been hiking on a mountain for hours, and then she stood at the edge of a cliff to see the beautiful view. "Wow," she exclaimed, "This is one of the most beautiful views I've ever seen!" Just then the ground beneath her hoof crumbled. She slipped and she started falling down over a terrifying height of 500 or so feet, and at the bottom there was solid ground, nothing soft at all. She tried her best flapping her wings, but it only slowed down her falling by a tiny bit, but not enough to make her safe. "Help meeeeeeeeee!" She saw Rainbow zip by above her. "Rainbow Dash! Save me!" Rainbow looked down to see Scootaloo falling to impending doom. The moment Rainbow Dash passed Scootaloo falling helplessly, Rainbow Dash immediately halted her ascent, her heart beating, adrenaline pumping through her body, she bolted towards Scootaloo in an attempt to save her, but she has already fallen at least halfway down the mountain. Suddenly, Scootaloo's wings gave up, causing her to fall even faster. Rainbow tried all she could, but even Scootaloo's greatest hero couldn't save her from this steep fall. Scootaloo hit the ground and woke up in her bed, panting and sweating. "Oh, it was all just a bad dream! Thank Celestia that wasn't real!"
