Enchanting Edge of Equestria

Chapter 4 Magic and Human Studies

I’ve been practicing with twilight these past few hours and utility spells aren’t that bad to conjure once I learn the magic algorithms. I was able to levitate about nine to ten items at once. It came easy once I could ‘speak the language’. I glanced at Twilight and she looked absolutely dumbstruck. My only thought was that the unicorns she’s used to working with don’t learn quite so fast. Quick learning was a lifesaving necessity in Sanctuary.

This magic was easy to pick up. It was very similar to what I was used to except in Sanctuary you focus on a staff you have in your hand not a body part. A little different but not too far off.

I explained this to her when she came out of her stupor.

“That’s fascinating! To think magic doesn’t change much. The focus remains the same the destination is different!” She was dancing around the room.

“Okay, what I want to show you next is…”

After that she taught me how to use other energy beams like spells. I have offensive spells but most of them aren’t beam magic. I use mostly elemental magic, transformation magic spells, and mastering my telekinesis. As I practiced she began asking me more questions.

“Sarah, could you tell me about your original species, your home world?” She asked. I glanced at her and took a breath before concentrating back on the spell I was trying to do.

“Well, it’s not like here at all. It’s a dangerous place, survival relies on your fighting ability. As for the planet…it has its light and it darkness…” I began to tell her all about Sanctuary and its people. All about the burning hells and the high heavens. She was again dancing like a little girl. I quite frankly can’t see how any of that could be exciting, but then again I had never run into a stranger from another planet. Unfortunately, if any of my new friends from Equestria found themselves transported to Sanctuary, I fear they wouldn’t last long.

Once her little dance was over she started to write a letter a princess named Celestia about her findings. I watched the spells she cast to do it but after about the first sentence I got bored of it. I began to try and modify the spells she taught me. They were non-lethal, every single one, but if I were to focus more on one point the spells could become lethal.

I tried it and it worked a little too well…the beam it bounced off the crystal walls and hit a book on one of the book shelves and disintegrated it. Twilight jolted and stopped writing. She looked around wide eyed in shock. I made sure to get a good look at the book before it was ash and its title was ‘The Constellations of the Equestrian Heroes’.

“What was that!?” She asked. I shrugged and tried to look innocent.

“I must have concentrated a little too hard…” I replied and glanced at the burnt book.

“Oh, I don’t even know what book that was!” She whined and she used a spell to remove all books from the shelf.

“Constellations of Equestrian Heroes,” I answered. She looked at me with confusion.

“I…looked before it completely went up in smoke.” I explained quietly. She smiled at me and seemed impressed.

“Well, that’s a relief, it wasn’t one of my collectors editions books. I can get a new one later” She replied.

“You have to be careful though, you concentrate a spell like that and it’ll be lethal!” She told me like she was trying to teach a novice child to steer clear of danger.

“That was the point. I’ve told you, On Sanctuary if you can’t defend yourself with it It’s useless,” I answered.

“Well, this isn’t Sanctuary! We haven’t made lethal spells for over two millennia! There’s no need for them here! We don’t know how you got here, we have no idea if we can get you back! You’ve got to stop looking over your shoulder for the demons! This is a place of peace!” She spoke forcefully, on the verge of yelling.

“Maybe you should start! What would happen if more people from my planet ended up here, Or if a rift opened up right to the Burning Hells? Everyone here would die! You’re defenseless!” I told her, matching her tone. But there was something else…I’m starting to worry about this innocent world.

“We are not defenseless, we would use the magic of friendship to stop the evil of the burning hell from coming through,” She responded. I couldn’t stop the laughter that escaped my lips. Friendship? A bond between ponies could stop the most evil of realms at it’s doorstep?

“Demons do not know the meaning of friendship! You would literally be torn apart limb from limb!” I spat at her. She looked me with a mixture of horror and…pity? Sympathy?

“You’ve seen it haven’t you?”

“I am one of the few enchantresses that keeps the burning hells from taking over Sanctuary,” I told her.

“I am sorry that you have that much weight on your shoulders. It doesn’t sound easy,” She said. It wrenched my gut. I looked at her and the way she was looking at me…I couldn’t describe it but I didn’t like it. I actually preferred it when she was that bubbly idiot that danced around the place. It took a minute for either of us to speak.

“Do you use the magic of light to fight them back?” She asked. I took a deep breath before answering.

“I use Lightning Magic and transformative spells to slaughter any demon that dares enter Sanctuary,” I told her. She seemed to flinch at my words. It shouldn’t be surprising the my rhetoric would be abrasive to her.

“When things get tight and I need to escape or gain the upper hand quickly I can make a sort of copy, after image of myself. It’s saved my hide more times than I can count. Demons show no mercy,” I told her.

“So many measures to keep yourself safe…I take it for granted here don’t I?” She asked more to herself than to me. We were both distracted by the purple dragon in the corner. It…burped up a scroll. Twilight went to it and read it. It was from Celestia. Apparently I am going to meet royalty, the princess was coming for a visit. This should be good.

“Does she actually rule anything? From my experience princes and princesses were usually not ruling entities,” I asked. Twilight smiled and it felt relieving to see it.

“Yes,” She answered. She took a sudden breath and began to perk up.

“I need to go let everyone know she is coming so they can get ready! She’s coming today…Oh, now there’s so much to do!” Twilight began to panic.

“Why didn’t you ask her to come tomorrow!?” I asked.

“I didn’t think about it!” She ran for the door and began yelling to the staff to get ready for the princess. The door closed behind her and I was left to my own devices. I looked over to the dragon…spike, that’s right Spike the Dragon.

“Why do you live with a pony instead of eating it?” I asked him plainly. He looked at me like I was crazy.

“I don’t eat ponies, I eat Gems, and they taste so much better! Besides, Twilight took care of me as a egg, she hatched me, and has taken care of me ever since I was a hatchlings,” He answered. I nodded as he explained, Fair enough.

“What are you doing here in the library?”

“I am Twilights personal assistant. I shelve the books and usually I handle her schedule. When Twilight’s in her lab I take care of things around here.” He answered. I nodded again though I was beginning to think this dragon was a crazy as Twilight was. They both seemed bat crap crazy. Then again I am talking to a Dragon when I could be practicing.

“Where is Twilight’s lab? It may be safer to practice in there so I don’t destroy anymore of her books,” I asked. He gave me directions and I left the library.

I went to the lab and started to practice my teleporting magic along with my illusions of my new form so when the time came i would be able to protect myself. I will never let my guard down even in this world there could still be evil beyond this peaceful façade. No matter what I will protect the innocent and fulfil my duty as an enchantress. No matter the cost to myself. That is what I pledged to do when a demon killed my parents. May no little boy or girl have to go through what I had to just to survive.
