Twilight's End

Twilight's End

Ever since Twilight Sparkle had seen Princess Celestia at the Summer Sun Celebration, she wanted to study magic and become a great and powerful unicorn. So, her parents bought her several books to help her pursue the study of magic. Because of this, Twilight spent several sleepless nights pouring over their contents until she had read them all from cover to cover.

Her parents noticed her passion of magic, and so looked for more ways for her to learn. Eventually, they agreed to write to Celestia’s School for Gifted Unicorns, and applied for Twilight to go. She was accepted in, provided she could pass an entrance exam.

However, all the studying in the world didn’t help her in her entrance exam. It seemed easy enough, all Twilight had to was make a Dragon egg hatch. But, try as she might, she couldn’t hatch the Dragon egg in front of her with any of the magic she had learned. Twilight started to panic, trying all she could to hatch it, while the invigilators watched on, and marked her badly.

Twilight had failed the exam, and that broke her. She felt like she hadn’t just failed the exam, but her parents. She had failed Celestia. And, most importantly, she had failed herself.

Twilight wasn’t the same after that. She stayed in her room, save for mealtimes and using the toilet. She stopped talking to her parents, even if they tried telling her that everything would be ok, and that she could always try again next year. But all Twilight heard was that their disappointment in her.

There were two ponies that Twilight spoke to in confidence, given they wouldn’t talk to her parents about it. Her brother, Shining Armour, and her foalsitter, Cadence. She explained to them how she felt, what she thought, and they listened. However, the more Twilight spoke to them, the more she felt they were disappointed in her too.

Shining and Cadence didn’t keep their silence. There were some things that Twilight’s parents needed to know, such as Twilight wanting to hang herself. Twilight’s parents were careful not to let her know that her trust was being betrayed, so kept what they were told a secret. They did hide all rope-based items from Twilight, as well as watch her as much as possible to make sure she was safe.

It was hard making sure Twilight didn’t think they knew anything. There were times where they nearly slipped up, and said something they heard from Shining. And there were times where they thought Twilight knew for some reason. But Shining and Cadence kept going in and counselling her. While Twilight didn’t accept the advice much, she did at least look like she was getting over it all.

But then her parents slipped up. One day, they mentioned things that Cadence had said. As they tried to rectify what they said, Twilight yelled for them to leave her alone. When Cadence tried to walk in and talk, she too was met with shouts to leave, the trust gone. Even when Shining Armour tried to talk to Twilight, he too was driven out, because Twilight was afraid that he would go to their parents and talk to them about everything.

Twilight was now back to square one. No confidence in herself or her magic ability, and believing her parents were disappointed, no, angry, with her because she failed.

A few days past, and Twilight stopped eating. She stayed cooped up in her room, the door now barricaded to stop anyone else getting in. Despite her parent’s calling her from the other side of the door, or Cadence’s attempts to fly in through the window to talk, Twilight stayed quiet, thinking that the words of reassurance coming from them were disguising their disappointment and frustration.

She did, however, leave her room one night, at a time where she thought everypony was asleep. Being careful as to not disturb them, Twilight snuck into the kitchen. Cautiously, she picked up a toaster, some bread, and a sharp knife. Even though Cadence, who woke up to use the toilet, spotted her re-enter her room, Twilight remained undetected, and hid the stolen items under her bed.

That morning, Cadence told Twilight’s parents what she saw, which made them feel somewhat relieved; they thought Twilight was now starting to eat again, which was a step in the right direction. This was enough for them to not bother Twilight anymore, thinking she was beginning to cope with the failure. However, they were concerned about their toaster being stolen, and never knew that the knife was gone.

Instead, Twilight had the Toaster, hidden under her bed. Using her magic, she roughly cut a star on her flank, as if to make herself a cutie mark. After both flanks had the same bloody cuts, she attempted to cut off her horn. After some effort, and a lot of pain, she had butchered her horn off. No longer needing it, she discarded the knife, hiding it under her bed with the toaster. She was in pain, but that didn’t matter to her. All that mattered was that she was a failure, and as such deserved to be in this much pain.

About a week later, during dinner, Twilight left her room one last time; the toaster balanced on her back, and her flanks scarred badly. She went into the bathroom, rested the toaster on the toilet, and barricaded herself in, before running a bath. This wasn’t to be an elaborate one, not one with soap or even hot water. Once the bath was done, she got in, and grabbed hold of the toaster in both hooves. After a soft “I’m sorry”, she pulled the toaster in with her. It landed with a splash, soaking Twilight before an inevitable shock.

The noise was heard in the living room, and Twilight's parents, along with Shining and Cadence, ran to see what had happened. Just as they were about to go upstairs, they felt the house begin to crumble. They had to leave if they were not to be crushed, and escaped in the nick of time.

After they had calmed down, they realised that Twilight wasn't with them. It was too late though, as she was dead before the roof of the bathroom hit her head. Sparks were coming from the rubble, and nopony dared to attempt to free anypony inside. Twilight was declared dead. The bath was her coffin. The rubble, her grave and tombstone. A plaque was erected in memory of her, claiming that she died when the house came down in the explosion. There was an explosion, but nopony ever knew the full truth.
