//------------------------------// // Turn that frown upside down! // Story: How to make an Egghead smile // by CristalGalaxy //------------------------------// Twilight sighed at the huge pile of papers to sign and books to verify. Verify! She couldn't even read them. Celestia had really ruined her day. She usually like doing things like this. Reading, signing and organizing books and important papers for her Princess was something she valued very much. Heck she was the one who had volunteered to help Celestia if ever she had too much work! But now... Now she regretted it. She hadn't slept last night and her mind was now a blurry mess. Read, sign, verify, change. Read, sign, verify, change. Read, sign, verify, change. Her routine was only those four words. All day. All night. For 2 days. The purple unicorn took a quill and gently soaked the end of the white feather in an ink pot. Her magic levitated it to the (at least) eighth pile of papers with the royal emblem on them. The quill approached the parchment but didn't touch it. Twilight just stared at her paper and quill, taken by a sudden laziness. Her courage disappeared and a depressing feeling overcame her. Was this what she was meant to do all day? Work on a desk? Was this really what she wanted? Her friends were all outside, having fun. And where was she? Inside, gloomily signing papers, doing her routine of those four horrible words. Twilight hadn't even bothered to re open the blinds after last night. She watched a drop of ink fall from the end bit of the quill and make a stain on the perfectly written parchment. The day was going to be long with the shiny sun outside and Spike having left the house for a day at Big Mac's. Suddenly the door opened, banging on the wall as it did so. A raspy and mocking voice came to her ears. "Hey Twilight! Busy with boring egghead things?" Rainbow Dash chuckled, looking for her friend in the semi darkness of the huge oak tree. Surprise hit her as she saw that Twilight had blocked off most of the sunlight in the room. "Uh... Twilight? You okay?" she murmured, getting closer to the unmoving figure of the purple unicorn who's back was turned from her. Rainbow Dash's features became worried as she faced Twilight. "Hey! Twilight! What are you doing in here?! At least take the time to open the blinds!" Then she spotted her tired eyes and still gaze that was staring into space. The purple unicorn didn't even react to the cyan pegasus entering her study and interrupting her work which was really unusual. Even the quill seemed to have a problem, now leaking all over her study desk and the papers. "What have you been doing?! Let's go outside!" Rainbow mumbled, pulling Twilight out of the room. "You're going to go into depression!" Her cracked voice let Twilight know how worried and full of despair her friend was. "I'm... need to work... It's... tardy..." she weakly murmured, not opposing much resistance. With one last pull, Rainbow managed to get Twilight through the door and into the fresh and sunny world. "Who cares about that?!" suddenly shouted the cyan pegasus. "Don't tell me you still want to work after seeing your current state! Just look at you! You've been overworking yourself! I bet you were at it all night!" Her frown became a thoughtful expression as she wondered what to do. Her gaze fell back on Twilight who was squinting her eyes under the unexpectedly bright sunlight. Her mane could have made Rarity faint for it was messy and even a few wicks were poking up in a funny way. Rainbow's frown turned into a grin as she found the perfect thing. "Come here egghead!" she smiled, "I'm gonna show you how to..." Rainbow gagged a bit. "... turn that frown upside down!" Darn your influence on me Pinkie Pie! Twilight looked surprised and didn't have the time to answer for Rainbow grabbed her, wrapping her hooves around her and took off, lifting up in the air as far and high as she could. They passed many clouds and Rainbow only stopped when she esteemed they were high enough. Twilight didn't even know what had happened and was now staring at the roofs of Ponyville that you could barely see. Then she started to struggle, closing her eyes and screaming. "Calm down! Stop it Twilight!" yelled Rainbow, trying to keep her wings flapping while holding the unicorn. "Noooo! Let me go! Please! I don't need this!" replied Twilight, eyes still closed. Rainbow just sighed and stopped flapping her wings, spreading them wide instead and making them slowly glide with the wind in their face. A peaceful breeze was blowing through their manes and tails. Twilight stopped struggling a little and dared to open one eye. She didn't close it and instead opened her other eye for what she saw was the most beautiful thing ever. They were slowly passing fluffy clouds and the sun was shining in the blue of the perfect sky and warming them up. The wind was nicely blowing through Twilight's mane, refreshing her and calming her. The hint of a smile started to appear on her lips and she perked her ears up, wanting to hear every sound that could be up there in the huge opening. Never has she thought that the sky could be so amazing from above. Pegasy were surely lucky to enjoy all the happiness she was currently experiencing. Her eyes sparkled and all her stress disappeared. She didn't dare close them, scared to miss a detail in the blue sky. The smile widened and she nuzzled Rainbow's hoof, closing her eyes under the reassuring touch of her friend. "Thank you..." she murmured. Rainbow smiled back as they both glided under the sun and sky, enjoying the peaceful world.
