Baton Pass

by Blaze Spectrum

Why Am I Doing This

Kalos Route 18 wasn't a very exceptional route - until you considered Terminus Cave. Multiple train tracks leading nowhere lined the outside of the cave, and weathered rocks obstructed their aimless path. Nobody was outside in the darkness of the night to witness the event that would befall the route.

At first, a few flickers of reddish light gathered amidst the tracks, which could have easily been mistaken for mild visual static. Eventually, they began to take a more tangible form, creating tiny floating numbers that began to neatly line up. The lines of binary eventually became more and more numerous, a few of them lining up neatly while most wrapped themselves around as if forming a shape. The outline of a pokemon eventually became recognizable, and the digits quickly faded.

Fleshy the Sylveon yawned, using her hind leg to scratch her body. After licking her paws a few times and attempting to manipulate the ribbons floating off her body, she grabbed a baton out of hammerspace. The ribbon wrapped tightly around it, and proceeded to throw it up in the air. Before it had even touched it for a second, she disappeared in a flash, leaving only the baton as a trace.

The same process had repeated itself over, and over again, the same Sylveon immediately warping herself to different locations of the region, and even different dimensions. The same pokemon was wanted in multiple cities, regions, and dimensions for major noise disruptions. They never seemed to be able to catch the elusive creature, as they were either all blown away by its Boombursts or it escaped with a quick Baton Pass.

Eventually, there was a bright flash on the outskirts of the Everfree Forest - and Fleshy promptly appeared not one hundred feet away from Fluttershy's cottage. She opened her mouth, producing a sound akin to a meow, and subsequently headed towards the direction of the building. As she made her way, a lone timberwolf missing a leg popped out of the shrubbery. She cocked her head as it charged towards her and her expression remained unchanged as it tackled her.

The timberwolf snarled when he brought her down to the ground, and used its two good forelegs to pin her to the ground. Her indifferent gaze rapidly changed, her eyes forming a scowl, and her face forming a frown. She opened her mouth and let out a scream.

All the air within a hundred feet was tinted an ominous orange as visible sound waves travelled outwards from her mouth and directly into the timberwolf's face. Pixie dust flew everywhere, adding a pink-ish tint to the blast. Multiple beams of visible light-like energy travelled outwards, seemingly summoned by the shockwave. The rumbling would be felt for miles and it completely obliterated all the windows on the first floor of Fluttershy's cottage.

The incredibly violent blast of noise completely blew the timberwolf apart, splitting its body into hundreds upon hundreds of splinters. They flew all around, a few of them embedding in Fleshy's body. None of the injuries seemed to bother her as she got up and took a bite from her Leftovers.

Nearby, Fluttershy could be seen peeking out of one of her broken windows in an attempt to see what had occured. Upon noting Fleshy's scratches and splinters she disappeared, and burst out of her door shortly after. At her sides, she carried saddlebags - presumably with first aid.

"Oh!" she exclaimed, "Are you alright? I heard a loud explosion and the next thing I knew..."

Fleshy meowed, closing her eyes, smiled, and cocked her head. She took another bite from her Leftovers and burped. Some of the scratches on her body slowly began to fade upon swallowing and most of her splinters promptly popped out.

"Oh my," Fluttershy said, her voice showing a tinge of excitement, "I've never seen any creature quite like you."

Fleshy yawned and proceeded to scratch her right cheek with one of her floating ribbons.

"I guess I could take care of you until I find out more about you," Fluttershy suggested.

Fleshy indifferently reached for hammerspace, no part of her body moving but her ribbons. Upon grabbing a baton, she promptly threw it up and vanished. Fluttershy gasped and turned away, shielding her eyes. Afraid to look at where Fleshy was, she peered over her leg and saw nothing on the ground but the baton. As her brain began the transition to panic mode, she heard a meow behind her.

There, Fleshy stood at her door, expression the same, and only her ribbons floating around her.

"Wow," Fluttershy muttered, "where did such a fascinating creature come from?"

As they stepped into her cottage, Rainbow Dash promptly crashed through the door just as it was closed. She rapidly got back up on her hooves and grabbed Fluttershy.

"You've got to come!" she shouted, "There's a dragon blackmailing the entire town! He's gonna burn it all down if we don't give him all our gems or if you don't stop him!"

The sudden shock took a while to sink in, but she quickly realized that immediate action was more or less necessary if this wasn't some sort of prank. She turned to Fleshy and said, "I'll come back for you!" Before she even finished her sentence, Rainbow Dash had already began dragging her out of the house.

Fleshy meowed and reached for another baton.

Almost anypony who was able to do so had vacated to their homes a while ago, but plenty were stuck out in the streets, too terrified of Garble's threats to move. While Rainbow Dash had attempted to knock him down, the teenage dragon had grown reasonably since his brush with Spike and was able to fight her off. Bolts of magic didn't even leave a scratch on his scales, which seemed to simply ignore the heat. Pinkie's antics didn't so much harm him as annoy him more - which was hardly what any of them wanted.

"He's back?" Spike said, "Really? I hate that guy."

Before anypony could think of a reply, Rainbow Dash flew over, Fluttershy trailing her at a fair distance.

"She's here!" she shouted.

Upon landing, Fluttershy managed to get a good look at Garble, but that only confirmed her fears. She hid in her mane and slowly began to slide back.

"C'mon Fluttershy," Applejack said, "we know you can do it! Give him a nice, hard, stare, and he'll back down!"

"Darling, you know you can do it," Rarity corrected.

"I," she said, "I don't. I can't use the Stare at will."

"So what are we going to do?" Rainbow Dash asked, "Wait for him to incinerate several houses until he comes to a pet and wait for Flutters to go beserk?"

Nopony really wanted to say 'yes', but at the moment, it was looking like the closest thing to a solution they had. But of course, it wouldn't suffice. They all sighed except for Fluttershy, and prepared to give Garble everything they had.

"Hey dragon!" Rainbow Dash taunted, "You wanna go, you pimply sack of raging hormones? Come and fight us like a real dragon, you cowardly sucker luncher!"

Garble stopped chewing on a carrot stand, and turned around. He raised an eyebrow, then growled.

"Oh," he said, "you wanna stop me? You're asking for trouble, stupid ponies."

As he finished his sentence, Fleshy appeared with a flash. She stood between the two, but less in a defiant manner and more indifferently. She meowed and scratched her side with her hind leg.

"No! Don't!" Fluttershy called out.

Anything that was said was lost on Fleshy as she took in a breath of air. Garble didn't doubt that he probably still had a good matchup against this frilly abomination, but something about it made him uneasy. He couldn't quite pin down why, and that only resulted in a sinking feeling. Spike, on the other side of the spectrum, instantly began shuddering at the sight of Fleshy. He began shuddering and instantly caught the attention of Twilight.

"What's wrong, Spike?" she asked.

"T-that thing..." he whispered.

"What about it? I know that its appearance was sudden and it doesn't look like any species I've ever seen, but it doesn't seem all that threatening," she reasoned.

"I don't know," he muttered as he instinctively covered his ears, "Something about it just makes me feel sick."

Fleshy tossed her Leftovers to the side, the half-eaten apple thudding lightly against the soil. Out of hammerspace, she pulled out a pair of golden-rimmed red spectacles with spiky protrusions along the rim. As she donned the Choice Specs, she looked both ridiculous and menacing. The distasteful golden rims and spikes would look ridiculous on almost anything, but the red shade of the actual lenses themselves were ominous and threatening. She let out all the air she'd stored in a single, terrifying scream.

The air immediately flashed orange, and the surrounding area seemed to explode. The scream sounded ominously low, accompanied by Garble's agonized cries, the bell-like sound of the pixie dust, the crack of windows shattering, and the rumbling of the earth.

As the dust cleared, there was a bright flash and a baton dropping to the ground. Fleshy was gone, as quickly as she had came. Garble was left on the ground, knocked out cold, his scales cracked and bent, creating a deformed figure of what he formerly was. Nopony had any idea what just happened, and it was probably better that way.

Calem took note of his surroundings for the umpteenth time, finding nothing close to what he was looking for. That Sylveon was spawned into existence by him, but what good was it if he couldn't even find it? Route 18 was the most likely location but it was nowhere to be found. He sighed, dropped his bag and sat down on the grass. Unzipping it, he shuffled through his pokeballs of which included a 6 IV hacked team of Gallade, Bisharp, Greninja, Klefki, and Heatran - Sylveon missing. He took out his Action Replay, and got ready to spawn another Sylveon into existence.
