A New World, a Fearful Way

ch. 47 interlude

Angela was angry. She wasn’t about to show it to any of her family or friends, but she was angry. She had thought that after being taken it to live with Lea, she wouldn’t have to deal with any of Gale’s pokemon again. After years of never having to travel and only a few local battles from the nearby wild pokemon, Angela had thought she would never have to see any of them again.
But now they were on Equus, and it seemed that all her old ‘buddies’ were popping up, still remembering her distinctly. She had always been the strongest, just like Gale had wanted all her pokemon and the other pokemon she gathered to be like. Instead, none of them seemed to beat her, and Gale kept forcing the pokemon she had to work harder.
One day, Gale had found her own pokemon who seemed stronger than most. A psychic type more powerful than its species normally was. Gale caught Grumpig and slowly learned that it was through testing on the pokemon itself that it her new pokemon was so strong. Gale’s brother, Daniel, had tried to stop her, but she decided to follow in the footsteps of that monster, Doctor Nurem, and start some tests on the pokemon she had to try and make them stronger.
Instead of some normal enhancement, she had developed some kind of device that would be put on a pokemon to let psychic control them, no matter the circumstances. For a while, it seemed to work, but soon it was discovered that enough force to one would damage it to the point it wouldn’t work. Around the time where Daniel had let Angela go, her being his pokemon, Gale had finally developed a chip and implanted it in all of the pokemon she had to work with. There were still a few flaws in her design, but none that made things difficult for her to work with.
However, before she had discovered to make the devices into chips, Gale had shifted her research into making the moves pokemon used stronger. There were some successes, and some failures. One pokemon she had use a special move she had help to design died trying to use it. Instead of stopping with testing the move, she tried finding a pokemon who could use it, which lead to other pokemon dying before she finally stopped trying the one particular move.
Fights were another thing she used to test them all. Angela had been one of the ones she used most of all, just to try and figure out how to make the others better. One battle between Angela and a Charizard ended badly, and the latter of the two didn’t make it to the end of the battle. Daniel wanted his sister to stop, but she always made sure he couldn’t do anything to stop her progress.
The more Angela thought about the days back she she was almost under Gale’s full control, she remembered how it all went sour. The day Gale had found Grumpig was the day when it seemed even Daniel couldn’t help Angela feel better anymore.
Now, here she was with Grumpig nearby. Lea wanted to take this criminal to Arceus so he could decide what to do with her. Angela just wanted to get everything over with and get rid of Grumpig for good. It wouldn’t be too hard to off the pokemon with her asleep. Then again, there was still one reason why Angela hadn’t already. This was one of the few pokemon who knew just how many other pokemon Gale had collected over the years.
Angela had heard that Gale was starting to interest some of her co-workers into joining her secret group. And with her working with Team Rocket, it wasn’t going to end well for anymon.
The absol might have never gotten to leave if it weren’t for Cryogonal. The pokemon was so resistant to following orders that he had to be constantly controlled by a psychic. It was after Cryogonal had learned a second new move that Gale decided he was too problematic to deal with. Originally, she was just going to to release him and let whoever found him to deal with him. Instead, Daniel had asked Angela to make sure Cryogonal didn’t hurt anyone.
It had been hard for her to listen to him at that moment. She had always wanted to escape Gale, but in doing that, Angela had to leave Daniel. He had cared for her and was the only good thing she had ever really gotten from being taken from her home. She had hated to admit it to herself when he was letting her go that she was scared to go back to being a wild pokemon.
She had been able to get Cryogonal to trap himself in ice pretty quickly, but Angela always stayed in the cave he was trapped in to make sure he didn’t escape, only leaving to get food for herself. Then one day, a few years later, she came back after finding something to eat to find there was a person in the cave sleeping with two pokemon. The fire one of the pokemon was letting off enough heat that it was starting to melt Cryogonal’s prison.
Angela tried to wake them up before he could escape, but it was too late. She tried to make sure they didn’t get hurt and battled Cryogonal. Instead, the girl’s eevee decided to help battle, and afterwards wanted to have a battle with her even though he was so small. In the end, the eevee evolved into an umbreon and Angela went with the girl.
From that day forth, Angela had been living with Lea living the peaceful life she had always wanted, just a little different. She thought she’d never have to deal with Gale and all the pokemon she trained ever again. But she was wrong.
While Gale herself would never be able to make it to Equus, Angela had to deal with the pokemon she had trained. Many of the ones that knew Angela held grudges with her for her being just a little bit better than them. Now she was out of shape and had a family that needed protection. At first Angela thought it would be fine, then Grumpig showed up again and used her against her own family.
There was now only one reason Angela wasn’t going to get rid of Grumpig herself. That was because unlike her, the psychic had stayed near Gale and knew what had happened in her absence. She knew how many more pokemon Gale had used, how much more damage had been done, and most importantly to Angela, what had happened to Daniel.
Angela continued to look at the sleeping figure of Grumpig, until she was surprised by her waking up. No one noticed at first, but then she quickly sat up. There was a crazy look in her eyes, one that made Angela assume something was definitely wrong with the psychic, even though most of the time it seemed like she wasn’t ‘all there’.
“Where’s Malachite!” She screamed at Angela.
The rest of the occupants in the train realised that Grumpig had woken up. Lea was the closest to Grumpig and tried to use yawn, but failed. She was smacked away and crashed into Matrix, who had been making his way over.
“Honey, tell me what you’ve done to her!” Grumpig yelled, looking back towards Angela. “You know what he does to her! Tell me what you’ve done!”
Angela quickly used Night Slash to hit Grumpig away from her, making the psychic hit the opposite end of the train car. After Matrix and Lea untangled themselves from the floor, Matrix helped put the psychic back to sleep.
“Anyone know what she was talking about?” Caddi asked around.
“She seemed to be talking to Angela.” Lea mentioned.
“Yeah.” Angela replied slightly nervously. “But the way she said Honey sounded more like the name of a pokemon rather that her just calling me that. She might have thought I was some-mon else.”
“She’s right. She was also yelling about someone named Malachite, and none of us know anyone with that name right?” Midnight asked.
“Never heard of a pony or a pokemon with that name before.” Angela said, shaking her head.
“Neither have I.” Citrus agreed.
“I noticed she also mentioned someone else, but didn’t mention a name. She just said ‘he’. I wonder who she was talking about.” Kya mentioned.
“Doe no.” Sparks said, trying to get up after he had been overturned when Grumpig went flying.
It wasn’t too long before the car riders all settled down, but Angela couldn’t stop thinking.
‘If she’s talking about who I think she is… then what have Daniel and Honey been doing? And what do they have to do with this Malachite?’
