Bad Luck

The Best Friend Motel

Rainbow lied in her bed in the hospital, reading her Daring Do book, while the room was silent all around her. She liked it, but in some way, hated it as well.

Daring Do was just about to enter an ancient ruin in her book, when Rainbow Dash heard loud commotion coming from down the hall. It got dramatically louder, then faded again as it passed by her room. One of the doctors walked in after it was silent again.

“Well good morning, Miss Dash. Did you sleep well?” the doctor asked politely.

“Sorta. My bump still hurts quite badly, and the lightning didn’t help at all.” Rainbow replied.

It was terrible outside. The pegasi were scheduled to bring a freak thunderstorm for the next two days, and it was hard to sleep for Rainbow.

“Ah, afraid of lightning, are we?” the doctor mused.

“NO! It’s just loud…..that’s all.” Rainbow knew deep down that lightning did freak her out a bit. Which is weird, considering she’s a pegasus.

“What was all that in the hall just a moment ago?” Rainbow asked.

“Just had to take a poor unicorn to the O.R. Celestia knows why, she looks fine to me.” The doctor answered. “I came in here to say you’re good to go! You can check out anytime you’re ready.” the doctor announced.

“Aw, thank you! I can’t wait to get back home!” Rainbow was pleased.

“Yeah…about that, I have some news for you. I’ve been informed by a derp-eyed source that your house has been bombed…by a terrorist.” the doctor informed.

“(Jeez, what is up with Derpy letting everypony know what’s going on all the time?)” Rainbow muttered.

“What was that?”

“Oh, nothing. I just didn’t know terrorists exist in Equestria! Are you saying my house is…gone?”

“Yes, I’m afraid it is. I’m so sorry.” the doctor apologized.

“Naw, it’s fine. I’ll see if I can go live with Fluttershy for the time being.” Rainbow Dash left to go check out.

....................................

Rainbow Dash peeked outside into the raging elements of the thunderstorm from the lobby.

“My Celestia, they’re supposed to bring a thunderstorm, not a tornado!”

Rainbow Dash took a couple steps outside, and nearly got blown off her feet. She pressed on for Fluttershy’s, but didn’t get very far. About ten steps from the hospital and she got struck by lightning.

She collapsed to the ground and convulsed for a few seconds, then shot back to her hooves. The lightning hit her spinal cord, and she had more energy than if she had drank sixty bottles of apple cider. She rose into the air and shot toward the Everfree Forest.

…………………….......

Fluttershy finished feeding her pet rabbit, Angel.

“There you go, little guy. Now don’t you go running off again, or Mama will get worried. It’s nasty outside.” Fluttershy cooed in her sweet quiet voice.

Her chickens were situated in their coop, and every other creature she had were cuddled up in their homes.

She was just starting to walk upstairs to her bedroom when there was a crash on the door. Fluttershy squealed and hid under her couch, not realizing how flexible she was.

She poked her head out from underneath to find Rainbow Dash standing outside her front door, frantically ringing the doorbell. She tiptoed over to the door and opened it, greeting Rainbow like the polite pony she was.

“Hey Fluttershy what’s up can I stay here for a while my house got destroyed can I can I thank you!”

Rainbow Dash whizzed over to the couch and sat down, forgetting how wet she was from the rain. She just couldn’t keep still, she moved in place while her wings were flapping like crazy.

“Gee, what happened to you?” Fluttershy asked, not caring how wet her sofa was getting.

“I was on my way here from the hospital and got struck by lightning which hit my back and all of a sudden I got hyper also my house was destroyed so—“

“Could I interrupt? Um…it’s great that you’re here, but could you calm down? If…if that’s okay…” Fluttershy stammered.

Rainbow was still hyperventilating.

“Shh…just breath…in and out. In and out.” Fluttershy whispered, loud enough for Rainbow to hear. After about 10 minutes of trying to calm Rainbow down, Fluttershy was finally able to talk to her.

“Alright Rainbow Dash. What happened?” Fluttershy asked.

Rainbow Dash hesitated.
“Do you want the whole story?”

“Yes, I do, but first…” Fluttershy went to the kitchen to fetch Rainbow some hot chocolate, because she was still shivering. When she returned, Rainbow began her story, all the way from yesterday afternoon, when she was bored just after lunch.

………………............

20 minutes later, Rainbow finished both her story and her hot chocolate. Fluttershy was both impressed and concerned with Rainbow’s bad luck streak.

“Wow…..I’m so sorry. Especially the Wonderbolts package. That must’ve stung.” Fluttershy sat next to Rainbow on the sofa. “Do you maybe…know how this happened?” she asked.

“I dunno. But I do know it started early yesterday afternoon.” Rainbow started to get drowsy again from her lightning high.

“Listen Fluttershy, as I told you, my house was destroyed. Can I crash at your place for a while?” Rainbow asked hopefully.

“Gosh, I don’t mind. But watch out for Angel, he’s a bugger around guests. You can rest on the sofa you’re sitting on now.” Fluttershy answered.

“Thank you SO much. I need a roof over my head, considering how bad it is outside.”

Rainbow yawned, thanked Fluttershy, then crashed right there on the sofa.

………………….............

Rainbow dreamed of her house still being intact, and all her stuff back. She also dreamed of that stallion Twilight had mentioned. He was in her home with her, and they were sharing a milkshake.

Suddenly she felt a twitch on her nose. She went to scratch it, and got a face full of shaving cream.

She woke up to find shaving cream all over her face, and on her hoof. She turned angrily to find Angel scamper away, giggling. She ignored it.

“Great, now I’m dreaming of sappy things, like stallions. I’m such an egghead…”

She looked outside. It was still storming, but it was dark. She picked up her head to see it was about 2:30 AM. Fluttershy must be asleep upstairs.

Rainbow got out of bed and tiptoed up the twisted staircase.

When she reached the top, she saw Fluttershy, sleeping peacefully in her bed. Rainbow tiptoed over to her and nuzzled her with her hoof. Fluttershy softly awoke.

“R…Rainbow? What is it?”

“Your bunny is on the loose. He got me with shaving cream! Why do you even own shaving cream?!” Rainbow whispered angrily, trying not to wake anymore animals.

“I told you he’s a bugger around guests. He’ll be like that.” Fluttershy giggled softly.

“I’m not one to complain, but could you keep your raving rabbit in custody? He’s interrupting my egghead dreams.”

Fluttershy sat up and rubbed her head. “Egghead?” she asked.

Rainbow hesitated.
“I had a dream about a stallion.” She muttered.

If Fluttershy’s giggle wasn’t heard earlier, it was now.

“Shh, shh! I don’t want any more of those animals to awake and attack me!” Rainbow sounded desperate.

“Dash, I didn’t know you dreamed of stallions!” she giggled in her cute little voice. Rainbow Dash blushed pretty badly.

“C…could you just…go get your rabbit?” Rainbow asked as she looked down at the floor.

“Okay, I’ll go grab Angel.” Fluttershy replied.

Rainbow Dash heard some rustling from downstairs, the light turn on, and a squeal from Angel. She also heard Fluttershy scolding Angel for being so bad.

Rainbow began to walk down the stairs, when she tripped on the first stair, and tumbled all the way down the long staircase. She lied there on the ground, with Fluttershy staring down at her, a hoof to her mouth.

“Gosh, are you alright?” she asked, concerned.

Rainbow had some sizable bruises on her body, and she also hit her bump, which throbbed anew all over again, and was bleeding badly.

“Celestia, I just wanna know where this bad luck is coming from!” Rainbow whimpered.

Fluttershy ran into the kitchen to get some band-aids.

Rainbow stared at Angel, who laughed at her.

“It’s all your fault. If it weren’t for you, I wouldn’t have walked upstairs to get Fluttershy. Therefore, I wouldn’t have fallen back down the stairs.” Rainbow accusingly stated.

Fluttershy returned with the band-aids, and aided Rainbow’s bleeding bump. “Okay now, you just sit here on the couch, you’ll be fine.”

Fluttershy tried to comfort Rainbow Dash, who didn’t really need it, but accepted it anyway. “It’s still pretty early, why don’t we watch some of the news?” Fluttershy offered as she turned on the TV.

After a couple hours, the weather came on. The program explained that today was the last day of that big thunderstorm, and it was going to be the most severe storm the pegasi ever brought out since 1992. The program stressed that everypony stay inside for the next 24 hours, just to be safe.

When the program was done, it was about 8:45.

“I’m gonna go make breakfast.” Fluttershy offered as she flew into the kitchen.

Rainbow looked outside and saw the ripping and flashing of lightning and thunder throughout the sky. She cringed a little. The sky stayed lit up, it just never stopped flashing. At one moment a flash came super close, and took out a tree just outside her backyard.

“Whoa! Fluttershy, it’s getting pretty intense out there!” Rainbow raised her voice and started to panic.

Suddenly, an ear-splitting boom smashed through the house, right over the kitchen. Rainbow collapsed to the floor and plugged her ears, which were now ringing too loud to hear anything. At that very moment, all the windows shattered, and the boom after boom from the storm were amplified through the cottage.

Fluttershy’s birds chirped and flew in all directions, spooked. Angel ran around, not knowing where to go. Rain poured in from the windows, and wind blew everything around.

Rainbow tried to reach the kitchen, her hooves in front of her to protect her. When she finally trekked through the raging, howling elements, she saw a traumatic sight, the center of the damage, the kitchen.

There was a massive hole in the ceiling where the lightning struck, and right underneath it lie Fluttershy, singed from the lightning, unconscious on the floor. Rainbow was poised in the doorway, gripping the frame, staring at what was in front of her. As her mane blew through all the wind, she realized her bad luck was affecting her friends, and now one of their lives were hanging in the balance...
