//------------------------------// // Rainbow Rocks // Story: What one can't have? // by Miralusa //------------------------------// Chapter 4 Rainbow Rocks It had been a month since the events of the fall formal and no-one had let Sunset forget that she was the one who caused it. She looked over to see the cutie mark crusaders working on their poster for the musical showcase. She went over and picked up one of their paint brushes. “You need any help?” Sunset asked with a smile. The crusaders looked at eachother. “We’re good,” they said and inched away from her. Sunset frowned at their comment, They still think I’m a monster. She looked around the gym and saw her friends. “Sunset Shimmer!” Pinkie cried out, Sunsets smile returned slightly, it quickly disappeared however as she looked around the gym to see everyone glaring at her confirming her doubts. Sunset held her arm nervously as she walked past all the disapproving stares that were silently judging her. She quickly reached her friends. “I didn’t realize the whole school was going to be here,” Sunset said with a sigh. Fluttershy put a reassuring hand on Sunset’s shoulder. Pinkie and Rarity tried to quickly change the subject. “Quite the eye-catching advertisement, if I do say so myself,” Rarity stated proudly as her and Pinkie raise up the rainbooms poster for the showcase. “And it smells like cake,” Pinkie said with glee. “It does?” Fluttershy asked. Pinkie brought the poster over and Fluttershy tried to smell it before it got shoved right into her face. “I used frosting instead of paste!” Pinkie replied happily as she pulled the poster back from Fluttershy’s face. “Hold on, you got some of it on your face,” She added, she got out a cloth and started to wipe her girlfriends face clean. “All better!” She said and started licking off the frosting from the cloth. Then principal Celestia came into the gym followed closely by vice-principal Luna. “Good afternoon students!” Celestia announced proudly. “I just wanted to tell you all how pleased I am that so many of you are going to be participating in the first ever Canterlot high school musical showcase!” She added with glee which was followed soon after by cheering from all around. “I’m sure we’ll do great in our fundraising this year, and hopefully not have a repeat of last year's science fair,” She said eyeing the Cutie mark crusaders. “This is sure to be the greatest event in CHS since the fall formal,” Celestia stated not remembering the whole she-demon attack. Sunset’s eyes grew wide and then they darted around the gym to see everyone returning to glaring at her. Damn it, I thought that would have taken their minds ‘off’ of me… Thanks Celestia. Then Sunset slid down the wall to the floor and brought her knees to her chin. “Maybe we should go to practice for the showcase,” Rarity said looking at Sunset. “That would be nice,” Sunset replied not moving from her spot. Applejack helped Sunset up off the ground and they left the gym to practice for the showcase. Sunset and her friends stood in the physics classroom with their various instruments lying around the room after they had just finished practicing. “We’ve got this thing down, guys… Although Rarity you're a bit behind in the chorus, and Applejack you hit the wrong note at the mid-section of the song,” Rainbow stated trying to criticize her friends on their performance. “Well I think you guys are good,” Sunset said trying to be the good guy. “Yeah we’re good, but we could be like twenty percent cooler,” Rainbow replied making her friends glare at her. “Or you could get a bass guitar to the face?” Applejack stated tapping her bass against her hand. “Hey, I’m just saying you guys could use some improvement,” Rainbow replied pointing her finger at her friends. “And what about you?” Rarity asked indignantly. “Oh, I’m perfect at this, absolutely nothing wrong with my skills,” Rainbow replied while stringing her guitar. “Although I guess I need to turn up the coolness by like two percent… Yeah that sounds about right.” She added now testing her guitar by playing a few notes “Are you sure this is how this whole friendship thing works?” Sunset asked confused about Rainbow’s boasting and criticism. “Kind of, but this is ordinary Rainbow remember,” Rarity replied with a smile. Before Sunset could reply the door opened and in walked Flash Sentry. “Hey guys, I heard you guys playing, you guys are sounding pretty great,” Flash stated with his usual demeanor of having his hands in his pockets. Let me guess, he wants to know if Twilight’s shown up. “Yeah it’s coming along pretty good…” Rainbow said and went into her schpeel about Rarity’s and Applejacks performance. “That’s great, hey you guys haven’t happened to have heard anything on our out of town friend have you?” Flash asked rubbing the back of his neck. Nailed it. “Sorry Flash, we haven’t heard anything on Twilight,” Applejack replied with her usual honesty. “Oh ok, well I guess I should let you guys get back to what you were doing…” Flash said as he backed up into the wall beside the door and then laughed awkwardly as he went through the door. “Did he even hear about yours and Twilights make out session last month?” Applejack asked turning to Sunset. “Honestly I don’t know, I think people are more interested in the fact that I blew up a section of the school,” Sunset replied trying not to think about that certain point in history. “Yeah that was crazy how you were like muhahaha and everyone else was like oh no and we were like taste the rainbow!” Rainbow said making the motions of the story as she went. “No offence,” She added looking over at Sunset. “(Sigh), none taken,” Sunset replied rolling her eyes. “So do you think you should tell Flash?” Rarity asked. “Tell him what?” Sunset asked in confusion. “That you and Twilight are pretty much a couple now,” Rainbow interjected with wide eyes. “And the chances of him believing me without Twilight here are next to nothing, and I’m not looking to cause anymore trouble than I already have… I already have enough to apologize for,” Sunset said with the frown returning to her face. “I guess you’re right, it wouldn’t really solve anything. I just feel kind of sad for him, believing that he has a chance when there is none,” Applejack stated awkwardly. “Well I’m sorry if I hurt his feelings, but he needs to understand that things don’t always turn out the way you expect,” Sunset said and picked up her backpack and checked. “Crap I’m late.” She added and ran to the door. “Late for what?” Fluttershy asked. “I volunteered to show some new transfer kids around the school. I figured they could get to know the new me before they figure out about the old me,” Sunset said hopefully. “I’m sure you’ll do fine, I’m sure you’ll mesmerize the... I mean charm…” Rarity tried to say while thinking of the best way to say what she meant to. “Knock ‘em dead… Break a leg,” She settled for that and patted Sunset on the shoulder awkwardly. “Thanks, Rarity,” Sunset replied awkwardly and left the room when she waved to the rest of her friends. Sunset ran through the hallways, and was almost to where she was going to meet the transfer kids and stopped to take a breath and make herself look presentable while resting against a statue in the middle of the main hall. Great I want to make a good first impression and I can’t even show up on time. She then looked at the statue which depicted a man with a beard and wearing a suit posing like he was singing in an opera. She then peered down at the plaque, Who’s John D. Oh well, that can wait I have to get moving. She ran to the meeting spot to find that they were already waiting there. “Are you the new transfer students?” Sunset asked. “We are,” The lead said in a sinister tone. That was kind of sinister… Must be drama kids. “You must be Adagio,” She said pointing towards the blonde one. “That makes you Aria,” She added pointing at the purple haired one. “And that means your Sonata, right?” She asked pointing at the teal haired one. “That’s right,” Adagio replied with a devious smile. Definitely drama kids. “Well my name is Sunset Shimmer, CHS is definitely the place to be at, where did you guys transfer from anyways?” Sunset asked curiously. “Umm… Crystal high?” Adagio said uncertainly. “Huh… I’ve never heard of that school before,” Sunset replied putting her hand to her chin trying to think of the various schools in the area. “It’s a far off school,” Adagio stated waving her hands to the side to signify it’s far away. “Must be, but don’t worry CHS is a great place,” Sunset replied with a smile. “Yes, we sense a certain… magic about this place,” Adagio said with a broad smile on her face. Sunset led the three of them through the hallways of the school. “And over there’s the science classroom and there's the computer lab.” Sunset stated pointing to the various classrooms before noticing a poster for the musical showcase. “We also have a musical showcase coming up, since you're new here I’m sure principal Celestia will probably let you sign up,” She added pointing towards the poster. “A showcase you say?” Adagio asked. “Well we have been known to sing from time to time.” She added with her signature smile. “Duh, we sing like all the time, it’s how we make people do what we want.” Sonata said like it wasn’t something out of the ordinary. “She means that we enjoy singing, Sonata,” Aria stated angrily towards Sonata. “Oh right, what she said that we said that we do is what I meant to say,” Sonata said trying to cover up something. “You’re the worst,” Aria said crossing her arms. “No you are!” Sonata replied glaring at Aria. “Don’t mind them, they’re idiots,” Adagio stated walking in front of them. Sunset looked at them like they were extremely odd, I’m thinking there a different kind of weird. Then Sunset noticed the gems around their neck. “Those are beautiful...” Sunset started and moved to touch the gem on Adagio’s neck but she was quickly stopped when Adagio grabbed her arm. Adagio’s eyes grew wide and she let go of Sunsets arm. “Sorry, it’s just that these gems are very precious to us. It would be tragic if something were to happen to them,” Adagio stated trying her best to sound apologetic. “See you around, Sunset,” She added and her and Aria walked off, Sonata stayed there for a few seconds before being pulled away by Aria. That was weird, maybe I should tell the others about this. Later on in the cafeteria Sunset sat with her friends talking about the events of her tour. “I’m telling you guys these new girls are really weird and something is definitely off about them,” Sunset said while taking a sip of her apple juice. “They don’t sound weird, maybe they really just love to sing,” Rarity replied trying to ease Sunset’s mind. “But there was something else about them, I think it has something to do with those gems around their necks but I can’t be sure,” Sunset stated trying to piece together the puzzle. “I’m sure you guys think I’m just being crazy but something really is off about them,” she added. “Well if you believe it then so do we,” Fluttershy replied. “Even if you did try to enslave the school to do your bidding last month…” She added as a joke but then realized how harsh it was. “No offense,” she added quickly. “(Sigh) None taken,” Sunset replied resting her hand on her chin. Before she could add to their conversation the doors of the cafeteria opened and in came the transfer students, and they were singing. They were walking through the cafeteria touching the students as they went past. Sunset and her friends watched as they started to brainwash the students and then a green mist started to flow from the students as they started to fight amongst each other as Adagio, Sonata and Aria are talking about a battle of the bands. This is ancient Equestrian magic. “Oh they’re that kind of weird!” Pinkie said as the song ended. “We need to tell principal Celestia right away,” Sunset said to her friends. “Agreed,” Rarity replied simply and they started to gather their things. We really could use your help Twilight… Wait a minute, I feel like I’m forgetting about something. She looked over at the three girls as they ‘dazzled’ the students and made them fight amongst each other. Whatever it is it can wait for a little bit, they need to be stopped.
