Chapter 1

A Taste of Rainbow

It was Hearts and Hooves day, around 6:00 A.M in Ponyville, and a certain yellow pegasus was at home, in his cottage trying to figure out who he would ask to be his date. He had one particular pony in mind.

"Oh what if he doesn't like me back. Or maybe he already has a date for Hearts and Hooves day. Or doesn’t like me the way I like him." Butterscotch said pacing around his house.

He had been wanting to talk to Rainbow Blitz for awhile now but never thought the time was right. He was afraid that he would have his heart broken and he would have made a complete fool of himself. He hated himself for being too shy to ever tell him anything, but he felt confident today.

"Ok all I have to do is fly to Rainbow's house and tell him how I feel...what if he's not home? Or maybe he doesn't want a date for hearts and hooves day." Butterscotch began to panic on the inside but quickly calmed himself. After gathering himself he headed to Rainbow's house, but on his way there he saw that Rainbow was outside of his house sitting on a dark storm cloud, head hanging. Rainbow had seen his pegasus friend flying towards him but didn't say anything when Butterscotch reached him he sat next to him.

"Oh, hi Rainbow, is um something wrong?" Butterscotch was deeply concerned for his friend.

Without looking up Rainbow replied- "Oh, hey Butterscotch, what's up?" Rainbow said this in a depressing voice and had looked like he had been crying. He had purposely not answered his question to avoid his explanation for being down.

"Oh um, nothing, how are you?" Butterscotch had seen a few tear stains on Rainbow's cyan coat.

"Oh I'm great...I'm having a great day." Rainbow sighed and gave a weak but forced smile.

"Well um I've had something to ask you, if you don't mind?" Butterscotch had started blushing lightly.

"What?" Rainbow had looked over to Butterscotch to see his light red cheeks.

"Well um, you see I, um wanted to ask you if you had a date for today." Butterscotch lied, that hadn't been what he really wanted to ask but he couldn't do it, at least not yet.

“Oh, well, no actually.” Rainbow said sounding even more depressed. “I wish I was able to get somepony, but I can’t bring myself to say all that sappy love stuff.”

“Well you know, I can be your date.” Butterscotch’s face flushed furiously now, looking away waiting to hear Rainbow angry with him for think that way.

“Wait, really?” Rainbow's voice sounded less depressed and more surprised, he was now blushing too.

“Oh, um yeah. Sure, I mean thats what friends do, right?” Butterscotch was looking into Rainbow’s eyes now, Rainbow stared backed.

“Well, I guess but...that's kind of weird, you know, like I’ve known you a long time and all but we’ve never done this before.” Rainbow said still looking into Butterscotch’s eyes.

Butterscotch was now thinking of kissing Rainbow, he wanted Rainbow to feel same way about him, like he did for his cyan friend. He was going to do it before he stopped himself. He didn’t want to rush this and scare him, before he was committed to the idea of them together.

“Oh, I understand, but you don’t have to if you don’t want to.” Butterscotch was now giving him a reassuring look.

“Well, ok, I guess, I mean it can’t be bad, besides its really just a day to spend with a friend.” Rainbow smiled, for real this time.

The urge to kiss Rainbow was overwhelming, but he knew not to do it now, for the moment was not right. He wanted the moment to be romantic and near the end of their day together.

“Ok, so what do you want to do first?” Butterscotch was thrilled that he was going to spend a day together on the most romantic day of the year. He felt a slight cold breeze, the cold February air refreshing and pure.

“I don’t know, what do you want to do?” Rainbow was looking around to try and think of what they could do.

“Well we could go to Sugarcube Corner and get
milkshakes.” Butterscotch knew that he would have a hard time explaining this to Bubble Berry, would he understand? He didn’t care right now. After a minute or so Rainbow has agreed to Butterscotch’s idea and they went to Sugarcube Corner. Bubble Berry was there to greet them as they walked in.

“Hiya, Scotchy! Hiya Blitz!” Bubble Berry was overjoyed to see his friends and get to talk about recent events.

“Hi Bubble Berry.” Butterscotch and Rainbow replied in unison.

“What brings you two here? And where are your dates?” Berry was intrigued by seeing Blitz without a date but not so much by Butterscotch not having one. Surely somepony would want to date Rainbow, he after all was the fastest flier in Equestria.

“Oh yeah, um about that ” Rainbow was blushing slightly “We’re eachothers dates.”

Berry’s eyes widened and glared at them in shock. “You are?” Berry was surprised to see that Butterscotch’s face wasn’t lit up like the sun. Instead he was blushing slightly, just like Rainbow.

“Yep, Butterscotch asked me earlier today and I said yes.” Rainbow was acting casually now as if nothing was out of the ordinary.

“Wow, I never knew you two had a thing for each other.” Berry said now looking less surprised.

“We don’t have a ‘thing’ for each other. Scotch was just being a good friend, that's all.” Rainbow suddenly got a little defensive, as to not have ponies take them for lovers.

“Well, either way, what would you like?” Berry was now waiting eagerly to serve the first couple of the day.

Before Rainbow could say anything Butterscotch had already said what they wanted- “We’d like a milkshake with two straws.” Butterscotch was blushing a bit more now.

“Okie, doki, Loki.” Berry trotted into the kitchen to get their milkshake.

While he was busy Butterscotch and Rainbow had found their seat and sat down, waiting patiently for their milkshake. A few minutes minutes later Berry came to their table and set the milkshake down.

“Enjoy, guys.” Berry said as another couple came in.

Rainbow was the first to take a sip from the milkshake. Butterscotch joined him a second later. As they drank the milkshake, Butterscotch began to look into Rainbow’s eyes in a sort of trance. He loved his eyes, they were the most beautiful color of dark violet. He loved them so much. After awhile Rainbow noticed Butterscotch was staring into his eyes and began glancing around the room, and he stopped drinking the milkshake, he looked at Butterscotch a little confused as to why he was swooning. Butterscotch snapped back and stopped drinking the milkshake as well. The glass was empty. Rainbow suggested that they go to the park and walk around, he wasn’t up to the idea himself but he knew that Butterscotch would love to go for a walk. When they got to the park there were couples and loners scattered about the park. It was early in the day after all.

“I love the park, it's beautiful.” Butterscotch was having a great time on their walk.

Rainbow had been enjoying himself as well even though he wasn’t one to just walk. He was used to going one hundred miles per hour all the time. But today he was enjoying his time with Butterscotch. Butterscotch occasionally looked to Rainbow and smiled. They spent three hours walking around, sitting on some benches talking and eventually they left the park and walked around Ponyville, looking at all the decorations that had been put up for Hearts and Hooves day. After walking through Ponyville, they had gone out to lunch. While they were there their friend, Duskshine, showed up.

“Hey, Rainbow and Butterscotch?” Duskshine was confused for a second.

"Oh, hey DuskShine." Butterscotch was happy to see him out today and not cramped in his home.

“Are you guys....together?” Duskshine was interested in knowing what Rainbow was doing with Butterscotch on Hearts and Hooves day.

“Uh, well for today, Butterscotch asked me if I had plans and I didn’t so we’re spending the day together.” Rainbow was happy Dusk had asked so he could explain.

“Well thats nice, I’m glad you two are having a good time together.” Duskshine gave a smile. “Well I’m gonna grab lunch and then I’m gonna spend the day with Barbara.” Dusk smiled. “Have fun you guys.” Dusk walked off to his table and ordered his food.

A while later Butterscotch and Rainbow went to the annual Hearts and Hooves day fair. They rode the ferris wheel and played a few games. After a great time at the fair, they went to dinner which had seemed a little romantic, he didn’t mind it, but he didn’t like how Butterscotch was trying to be a little romantic. Butterscotch had been talking a bit differently and had been looking at him differently. He thought it was weird. More than weird, it was....straight up….odd. After their strange dinner, it was getting to be nighttime. Rainbow and Butterscotch went to his cottage. When they got there Butterscotch had gotten more odd. He was talking differently still and he was being more romantic.

“Rainbow, you wanna go watch the sunset?” Butterscotch had said it as if he was in love. He was obviously but Rainbow did not know this. He felt the urge to kiss Rainbow was getting completely unbearable, he couldn’t take it. But it had to be perfect. He kept this in mind.

“Yeah, sure.” Rainbow had no idea what he was going to get himself into.

When they got outside, Rainbow and Butterscotch laid down and watched the sunset, but as it went down beyond the horizon, Butterscotch turned to Rainbow and looked at him.

“Rainbow, I have something to tell you.” Butterscotch was looking right into his eyes.

“Yeah, what is it?” Rainbow asked looking over to him.

“I...love you.” Butterscotch couldn't take it he had to kiss him it was the perfect moment. He leaned in and his lips touched his and he gave him a long, deep kiss...he loved it. It had seemed to last forever, but after a minute he finally broke the kiss. Rainbow looked into his eyes and stared, he was shocked. All this time, this is what Butterscotch had wanted all day. He knew this now.

“I...love you too, Scotch.” Rainbow had spoken softly, he had loved the kiss too.

They both looked into each others eyes and smiled softly.

When the sun retreated completely and the moon had risen, Rainbow and Butterscotch went inside and went to sleep in his bed. Butterscotch had known what it was like to kiss Rainbow Blitz, and he would know it many more times. They were asleep quickly, snuggled up with each other and with wide smiles on their faces. Thats when Butterscotch knew it was the best day of his life.
