Royalty's Guard

by For Thy Princess

Chapter 1 - Graywolf - PG

My name is Graywolf, I am starting to become a real royal guard. Not just any royal guard, but the Night Princess's personal royal guard. It was strange how she chose me of any royal guard. She walked in, looked about the royal guards that seemed more fitting than I was, but here I stand, next to Princess Luna, smiling as I watch her grow in friendship evermore. Her smile was happy, and due to that, I was happy. "Oh," Princess Luna looked at me. "I am fine on my own."
I laugh and nod, there was no doubt about it, she was fine on her own. "I know Princess, but, alas orders from being a royal guard states once you are a personal royal guard you cannot no matter the circumstances, leave the Princess alone," I explained, she sighed, I could tell she wanted to do something herself, but I just couldn't let her. But from her half-hearted smile, I could also tell she understood.
Ever since I was young I wanted to be a royal guard. My father wanted me to be a royal adviser like he was, and my mother was a clothes designer. However, my life changed when my cutie mark appeared. It was a black shield above it were light gray stars, not like Shining Armor's cutie mark, my flank is cascaded in gray stars. Originally, as tradition of our family, my name was what they thought I'd become, and since at a young age before they could come up with a name, I had an unhealthy connection with animals. I speak with them, and unlike Fluttershy who was spoken of highly by Princess Luna. I never misunderstand and I never had any trouble learning new animal languages.

I stand by her side, remembering the time she was talking with me about her sister's unhealthy eating habits, now, Princess Celestia has had a bad rap about being someone who has ill-intent when talking with ponies. And I can say, they are usually wrong, when it comes to Princess Celestia she is seldom, never felt the loving embrace of another, so, she doesn't know what she's missing. Closest she gets is a hug from Twilight Sparkle, her apprentice.
I hold onto a sword I am required to keep around. For the truth to be heard, no one else but the royal guards and the Princesses, the Griffin Kingdom is planning a rebellion, and one day that will occur and war will be out of control. "Princess . . ." I look over to her, who gives me a look like she's actually listening. "Do you think the Griffins will win the war upon the choice to start it?"
She tapped her chin, thinking for a moment. "In my opinion," she looks down, that's never a good sign. "The Griffins are well equipped with weapons due to the closeness of the Outskirts, where the Changelings live." She's right, the Griffin Kingdom is much, much more than just another kingdom, it is something no one can understand unless stemming from the Griffin Kingdom. Which, most do not. I however was, before settling down, my father traveled across Equestria and even the Griffin Kingdom, he thought that the Griffin Kingdom would be good for raising a family. And as I took my first breath and as I am able to recollect things, I realized quickly, the Griffin Kingdom was not welcome of us. Of creatures with horns or wings that feathered differently than theirs.
I have wings, much like my father while mother was a simple earth pony scraping by in Ponyville until my father, who came from Trottingham smitten her and took her hand in marriage. A couple of years of living in the tranquil home of Ponyville and they left to see new places. Never had we lived in one place for too long, the longest place we actually stayed was in the Griffin Kingdom for seven years. For much of that time, I was only young. But when we moved it wasn't a loss, I had no friends, only family.
No one called me a friend, thus, I never called anyone a friend either. I went through my life until I turned eighteen living town to town with my mother and father. That day when I turned eighteen, I looked at my father and told him I wanted to be in the royal guards. His expression was that of a proud father, but my mother's was one of a saddened mother losing her child to death. However, I have yet to die.

I am reminiscing for too long, I could tell by the way Luna looks at me. Confused and worried at the same time. This is only first day on this job, I am only supposed to learn what I can of the Princess of the Night before my shift begins as the Princess's personal guard. "I apologize, I was reminiscing," my tone was mono, I am not for fun, truthfully, if I dug deep enough, I could've probably found friends, but I didn't want to work at that, it seems unnecessary to me. "It won't happen again Princess . . . I promise." I said, she giggles when I say that, she knows I will reminisce again. But she doesn't care, she's that kind of person, she doesn't care.
"I don't mind if you reminisce, Sir Graywolf," I cringe as she says 'sir.' I hate that word especially coming out of a Princess's mouth while talking to me. "Reminiscing is natural to do after all," she said, both flat and sweet. "I like to think without memories, how do we dream? Without memories we have no recollection of past experiences."
I nod, she has some logic to that, but I find her ideals hard to believe. But, my job is to protect her, not agree with her. She's trying to hard to become friends, if she doesn't know, I do not become friends easily. "I shall leave to your bath, Princess." I say and walk out the door. I hear the door lock and I walk to the quarters. Due to the promotion to a personal guard, I am given a room in the actual castle not a bed in a dank room filled with other men and women. Most of which I don't know the names of.
