Exploding through the clouds a rainbow streak looped and twirled in a brilliant ballet as the sun's golden rays lightly kissed the evening sky. Performing for a single fan, Rainbow Dash's speed and agility mesmerized the heart of the young princess watching below. With every climax and death defying trick Twilight Sparkle could feel her body hasten in excitement as she longingly dreamt of lying in the cyan pegasus’s warm embrace.

Over the years Twilight had slowly grown to see Rainbow as much more than just a friend. Whether it was her arrogant demeanor, or the way she freaked out for all things Wonderbolts and Daring Do, Twilight could not help falling in love. Desperately she wanted to share her feelings with Dash, but she was never certain if she would feel the same. It was one thing not having the same love and passion she held, but what if Rainbow rejected her? Though Rainbow seems like a fairly tolerant pony, the idea of two mare being together might be too much for her to accept. Twilight could not chance having her heart broken and her friendship ruined in one foul swoop.

Lost in her train of thought Twilight was unaware of the cyan mare who had just landed in front of her. “By the astonished look on your face I take it I was awesome.” Rainbow Dash's wings spread in a triumphant pose as a devilish grin slyly crept over her face. “Then again, was there ever any doubt?” Taking a moment to bask in her own glory Rainbow strutted around the still silent mare. “Twi, Twilight, Equestria to Twilight. Is anypony home?”

Startled and confused Twilight feverishly shook her head sending a shiver down her back passed her wings. “Rainbow Dash, you never cease to amaze me. I thought my heart was going to leap out of my chest. You're pretty...”

“Amazing.” Stopping her in mid sentence Rainbow's words were sealed with a single wink.

“Okay, okay, you're not that great.” Twilight could feel her face blush as she playfully flirted with the athletic mare. “I bet you couldn't even beat me in a race, say back to your place.”

“Is that so, huh?” Rainbow's voice grew in intensity as her competitive nature slowly took over. “Why don't you leave the racing to me Twi? I would hate to make your highness look bad.”

“Maybe you're right.” Twilight's words slowly trailed off as her head slightly lowered toward the ground. “I couldn't beat you if I wanted to.”

“You know it! Oh.” Rainbow could see the sadness welling up in Twilight's eyes as her arrogance slowly turned to guilt. “Hey Twi. I was just playing around.”

Having her back turned toward Rainbow, a single word whispered from Twilight's mouth, “Rainbow?”

“Yeah Twi.”

“One, two, three, go!” With a powerful gust of wind Twilight found herself rocketing through the air. A taunting veneer on her face seductively egging on Rainbow's desires.

“Hey!” Following close behind, Rainbow Dash quickly climbed after the sneaky alicorn. Chasing after the “now” Princess of Friendship, Rainbow Dash soon found herself in a state of pure joy. Not since she was in junior flight camp had she felt such attraction for another pony. Twilight was unlike any other pony she had ever met. It wasn't the fact that she was an alicorn princess, though that didn't hurt anything, but rather how she was the full package. Though she would never tell her this Rainbow felt lucky to even know her let alone be flying next to her. Rainbow knew it would never work out. Why would someone as smart and talented like Twilight ever want to be with a dumb jock. It was unlike Rainbow to undermined how awesome she believed herself to be, but compared to Twilight she just didn't fill adequate.

None of this mattered, for at this moment all that was important was each other. Floating weightlessly over Twilight, Rainbow flawlessly glided into her side as she mischievously elbowed her . “Hey Twilight, I thought this was a race.” Then as if with no effort at all Rainbow lit up with an array of color as she widened the gap between them. “See you at the finish line.”

Knowing she was unable to beat Dash on flying skills alone Twilight mind began to race for some way to even the odds without resorting to any sort of cheating. Suddenly and without a second thought Twilight's voice shattered the silence of the now setting day when five words screamed from her mouth, “Rainbow Dash, I love you!”

“What?” In a state of both utter confusion and secret passion Rainbow closed her eyes as the radiant image of Twilight raced through her mind. Was what she heard real? Could Twilight love her?

“Rainbow Dash look out!”

Crash!!! In a moment of lapsed judgment Rainbow soon found herself smashing through the basement window of a nearby house. How could she allow herself to forget all of her flight training in a single second to not only crash, but end up with her flank flailing in the air? The only thing that could make this situation worse was if Twilight found her before she could get up.

“Well. Uhmm lets see. No! Stupid window! And I'm stuck. Way to go Rainbow Dash you got yourself stuck.” A look of shame and embarrassment wash over her body as she frantically wiggled and squirmed in an attempt to free her slender frame. Then a familiar voice pierced her ears forcing her heart to drop to the floor.

“Hey Rainbow Dash, I'm pretty sure this means I win.” A hint of laughter accompanied Twilight's every phrase as she gently lowered herself next to Dash's vulnerable flank. Knowingly taunting the trapped mare Twilight hooves devilishly found themselves resting on Rainbow plot.

“Only cause you cheated. Now knock it off and get me out of here.” Dash's tail defensively whipped around as her anger began to grow.

“What's that you said. I can't hear you through this wall.” Giggling Twilight was having to much fun to just give in. This was a rare opportunity and she wasn't about to pass it up.

Finding herself wedged tight within the window frame Rainbow Dash sat as her fate and her flank where in Twilight's 'caring' hooves. Though it was Twilight's full intent to let her out she was not going to waste this opportunity to find out how Rainbow really felt about her. Blurting out the truth must have had some affect on Dash otherwise she wouldn't have crashed. Whatever the case may be Twilight had to risk it all.

“Hurry up, and get me out of the here, Twilight. I'm starting to lose feeling in my wings.” Rainbow Dash paddled in place as if she was swimming up stream, but her tired efforts only prolonged her stay, “Twilight are you even back there? I don't hear anything.”

Twilight's cheeks began to blush as she deeply resisted her need to giggle. “I'm hear Rainbow...Hey Rainbow, can I ask you something?” Twilight's face slowly blushed as she carefully pick out exactly what to say,

“You want to talk right now?! I hate to be rude, but I am kind of preoccupied!” Rainbow's frustration began to show through her normal ice cold temperament.

“I'm being serious. If you answer my question, I promise to help. Cross my heart and hope to fly.”

Rainbow's eyes rolled as she realized there was no point in fighting her. Besides what harm could a single question be? “Okay Twilight, fire away, but then you have to let me out.”

“Thank you Rainbow.”

“You can thank me later. Now what's your question?”

“Rainbow?..” Twilight's lungs exhaled a long breath as she tried to slow down her heartbeat. “Rainbow, What do you think of me?”

“What do you mean?” A look of confusion swept over the rainbow pony. Her mind quickly turned to moments ago when Twilight confessed her love. Could this be what she was asking about?

“Just... What do you think of me?” As Twilight's anxiety crescendoed she soon noticed her hooves trembling beneath her.

“I don't know. I think you are smart?”

“Oh.”

“Yeah?” Rainbow paused momentarily, but was met with silence. “I mean you are like the smartest pony I know. You are always so caring, and you did save Equestria like how many times. I mean... You're pretty awesome.”

Tears welled in Twilight's eyes as Rainbow danced around what she longed to hear. “You think I'm awesome?”

“Yeah. Not as awesome as me, but that's me.”

Having stalled long enough Twilight finally worked up her courage. “Rainbow Dash, I want you to know... I... I love you.”

With a sudden flash of energy the cyan pegasus vanished from her predicament only to be greeted by the loving stare of her heartfelt friend. Staring deep into her eyes Dash could feel the anticipation building within Twilight's heart. Seconds turned into minutes as the two mares stood frozen in time. It was clear to them that sparks had indeed flew, but for one mare this sudden display of emotion was too much. Nothing would make Rainbow happier than to reveal her long awaited love upon the the still waiting princess, but she couldn't bring herself to do so. Lowering her head in shame she could feel her fears getting the best of her. More important than that she could feel Twilight's heart breaking.

Tears rained down Twilight's violet face staining the soft dirt as she took off from the embarrassing scene. Deep down she knew that no pony could love her, least of all Rainbow Dash. How could she be so foolish to allow another to bare her heart? Making her way through the now sleeping city she hoped no one had saw the horrid event. The agony of depression washed over her soul leaving her numb of all emotion.

No one pursued Twilight nor was anypony coming to her side. The only pony who knew of her sadness and pain was still simply standing there. With her eyes closed Rainbow was secretly kicking herself for the damage she had caused. Never had she seen Twilight so tore up inside. How could she cause the pony that she loved so much heartache? Why couldn't she at least talk to her? If only she had said something maybe she wouldn't be alone right now. Staring into her eyes was such a magical moment. In those few seconds Rainbow's heart was beating faster than it ever has, and her anxiety rose to epic proportions. The only thought that danced around her mind was a single question. What if she finds out I'm not as awesome as I appear to be?

Rainbow Dash's arrogance and confidence were known all over Ponyville, but the truth of the matter was this was just an act. It was true that Rainbow Dash was awesome, but what about the pony underneath. What if behind this glorious front was a nobody that didn't deserve Twilight's love? What if at the end of the day she was nothing more than a fake? The idea of pulling back the curtain for all to see was horrifying. In this moment of doubt she not only froze, but possibly lost her only chance at happiness. She tried as hard as she could to muster up all of the courage she had left, but it was to late. Twilight was gone.

Swooping through her open bedroom window Twilight quickly hid herself from the world deep beneath her cool silk sheets. The void in her chest felt like a black hole capturing every glint of happiness left in her life. Unable to do anything but cry Twilight laid in her bed hoping that her suffering would soon go away.

Isolated and cold Rainbow Dash took to her home as she wallowed in her own self doubt. Diving into her reserve stash of apple cider Rainbow looked off of her balcony at the moonlit backdrop of the city. Lost somewhere in the tall pint of cider the cyan mare chose her fate. “Alright Ponyville hear me now! I love Twilight Sparkle, and I will make this right! Someway, somehow, I will win back her love!”
