Once Upon a Pony #1 The Curse Begins

Starla's New Friends

The sun shone bright on Sunset Shimmer as she walked into town. She walked confidently with a smug smile on her face. No one in Bronyville wanted to get in her way when she was anywhere.

"Another day of being in control of Equestria," Sunset thought.

She walked passed three teenagers. One had brown spiked hair, and was dressed sporty as she was rollerskating. The other was dressed flowery, and had long blond curly hair. She stood by her other friend, who had red hair knotted in a bun. The girls were a bit intimidated by the mayor and made no haste to get away, but the mayor stopped them in their tracks.

"Hello girls!" Sunset Shimmer said in a false tone. "Have you noticed anything or anyone out of the ordinary?"

"No," the red haired country girl replied.

Sunset was annoyed by her reply, but she kept her smug smile glued to her face.

"Well, if you do see anything, tell me right away," Sunset huffed.

"Okay..." The roller skater murmured.

"Oh, and Scout?" Sunset added to the roller skater. "No rollerskating on the sidewalk."

The three girls walked away as the mayor continued her morning stroll. She walked to the old antique shop. As she was about to enter, the mail lady walked up to her. She had some sort of a vision problem, her one eye stared at Sunset, but the other stared off into space.

"Madam Mayor!" She declared happily. "I have your mail!"

"Great," muttered the mayor.

She pulled out an envelope from her bag and gave it to the mayor. She looked at it for a moment, it was the wrong mail. Before she could return it, the mail lady was gone. Another day with the wrong mail.

"Some of the happiest people are clueless," The mayor thought bitterly.

Sunset shrugged it off as she walked into the antique shop. She stood in the back of the line while watching a young lady pay for some trinkets. She was small and timid, and had a slick blond pony tail. She wore a very short dress. She was chatting to the shop owner, who was tall with whitish gray hair and bushy eyebrows. He was fashioned in the strangest suit, it was full of different patterns. The two had a strange liking for one another, but didn't want to show it.

"I can make that a discount," the shop owner offered.

"That would be great!" the young lady replied.

"Fluttercord..." The mayor thought coldly. "The unlikeliest two are still inseparable."

She was about to break it all up.

"Scram Astrid!" Sunset snarled at the girl.

"Agh!" Astrid screamed, startled. "Sorry...madam...mayor...."

Embarrassed and intimidated, she ran out of the store. The shop owner sighed heavily, he looked at the mayor coldly.

"We need to talk, Discord," Sunset stated.

"It kills me everyday not really knowing Fluttershy at all," Discord complained.

"You know the price, the wimpy pony would spoil everything to her friends."

"What do you want Shimmer?"

"It's been 26 years now..."

"Oh really? I can't even tell anymore," Discord said sarcastically.

"Don't you remember the prophecy?" Sunset asked.

"Ah, that," Discord recalled. "It really has be 26 years."

Sunset walked to the window and peered out. Her son was with Starla as they walked down to the Equestrian Cafe. Discord walked over and looked at Starla.

"What are we looking at?" Discord questioned.

"My son brought back Twilight's daughter," Sunset stated.

"I get it now."

"What do I do now? She's there! It will all come true!" The mayor panicked.

"It isn't my problem, madam mayor. I'm not taking any side."

Discord snapped his fingers, and the lights went out.

"Doesn't mean I won't lay a few tricks," Discord smirked.

"Don't go meddling with my plans," Sunset growled.

Discord stepped in front of Sunset Shimmer.

"You took most of my powers, took my laughter, and took away Fluttershy. I'm not promising anything." Discord sternly muttered to Sunset.

Sunset scowled at Discord as he opened the door for her.

"Good day, Madam Mayor."

Blue tugged at Starla's hand as they walked down to the Equestrian Cafe. She could feel Blue's excitement running through her, it felt nice to be walking with eager company. Most days she would walk down to her car by herself, or walk to Starbucks for a latte. But this, this was something more.

"So," Starla hummed, "will you show me around?"

"Of course!" Blue squealed. "I want to show you everywhere! My school, my friends, my hideout, the antique shop, oh I can't count!"

"Great!"

"We should get breakfast first, fill ourselves up with food."

"Blue, you took the words right out of my mouth ."

"Of course I did."

Blue and Starla walked a few more blocks before reaching the Equestrian Cafe. It was a quaint little place, it looked welcoming to anyone with an appetite. The structure was covered in ivy, potted plants made the grand perimeter. Blue and Starla walked into the cafe, and it was bustled with people. The only three she recognized was the innkeeper, her employee Diane, and the young woman she met on the street. The two got a seat the bar next to her.

"So, you decided to stay!" The woman beamed.

"Yeah, I'm glad that I did, I like not being alone back in New York," Starla replied.

"No one wants to be alone."

Starla looked around for Blue, but he wasn't at the booth.

"Blue? Blue!" Starla called.

"I'm over here!" Blue called from another table.

He was huddled by three girls, who seemed very friendly. One had blond hair and dressed in a country style, the other blue hair and looked as if she just came back from a run. The other was Diane. They all were chatting with Blue, who already had got his breakfast in a flash. Starla walked over to get Blue when she herself was crowded by these girls.

"Now who is this, Blue?" The cowgirl asked.

"That's my real mom," Blue replied proudly.

"Hi," Starla said sheepishly.

"Well howdy partner!" Exclaimed the cowgirl. "Welcome to Bronyville, I can honestly tell you that this town is worthwhile."

"I can already tell," Starla replied more confidently.

"My name is Amber."

The cowgirl pointed to Diane.

"This here's Diane!"

Diane waved to Starla.

"Yeah, we've met," Diane said in the most monotone voice. "She's staying at the Equestrian Inn."

Amber turned to the runner.

"This is Piper, she has 5 medals from the Bronyville Race-A-Thon in the forest," Amber explained. "She's also the best boxer I ever did see."

Piper shook Starla's hand.

"Nice to meet you...uh..." She said until realizing that she didn't know Starla's name.

"Starla," stated Starla.

"Nice to meet you Starla!" Piper exclaimed.

"And I'm Rose," the woman at the booth stated.

She walked over to Starla, Blue, and the girls.

"I'm Blue's elementary teacher."

"I didn't know that," Starla surprisingly mumbled. "Blue, you didn't tell me this."

"Yeah, I was busy drinking hot chocolate," Blue replied.

All the girls laughed at Blue's absurd comment. It was only a few seconds until they noticed the sobbing girl rush in and sit down at the bar. The four women had an expression that said "Now what happened?"

"What's with her?" Starla questioned.

"That's Astrid," Amber explained. "She's had it tough these last for months."

"She ran a daycare for all the pets in Bronyville, I brought my tortoise there all the time," Piper said kind of downheartedly.

"Things looked good for her, until the mayor stepped in," Rose added. "The mayor will shut down any business she sees unfit, she shut down Astrid's."

"What's wrong with a pet daycare?" Starla asked.

"One of the dogs snapped at Blues hand while he was playing with the dogs," Rose answered.

"Give me a break," Starla said bewildered.

"Now she works late nights at the Dodge Junction, which as little pay and no respect for women," Amber muttered.

Back at the booth, Astrid covered her head in her hands, wet mascara streamed down her face. The mayor could blow a fuse and ruin her life in Bronyville even more. She couldn't handle if she lost her house. Diane and a young woman with ebony black hair came next to her and listened to her sorrows.

"Another late night last night, Astrid?" The black haired woman asked.

"Roxanne, I just don't know what to do!" Astrid cried. "It's like shes going to take away my house next! I'm walking on eggshells here!"

"There, there," Diane said warmly. "Want some coffee and a croissant?"

"Sure..." Astrid muttered.

"Why haven't we elected a new mayor yet?" Diane asked sarcastically.

Roxanne gasped her comment.

"My dear Diane!" She exclaimed. "You could make the mayor shut down the cafe with that attitude!"

"Why should I care? This cafe isn't fun, it doesn't make me laugh, and it doesn't make me happy," Diane muttered coldly.

Nothing really ever made Diane happy.

After breakfast Blue and Starla set out on the sightseeing in the town. Starla met kind people in the cafe, but also heard a lot of drama. Why is Blue's foster mom so mean to the town? Must be why Blue thinks she so evil, she just has a political edge on her, no biggie.

"So, how was it meeting the Elements of Harmony?" Blue asked. "Or at least most of them?"

"Whoa, whoa, whoa," Starla said, confused. "Elements of Harmony?"

"Uh, yeah, forgot that the people in the town are really ponies?"

"Ah, are you still on that subject?"

Sure enough, he still had the book with him.

"Today, you met Twilight Sparkle, Pinkie Pie, Rainbow Dash and Applejack," Blue explained. "The weeping girl was Fluttershy."

"What kind of a name is "Pinkie Pie?" Starla wondered.

"Hey, it still a name, just like yours."

"Fare point."

"But hey, you made some friends."

"How could they be my friends? I just met them!"

"This is only the first part of it, your friendship is important."

"I won't be staying here long enough to even have them as friends.

"I bet something about Bronyville will make you want to stay here."

"What ever you say kid."
